dead dove do not eat is not only a really funny joke but it has also gained a life beyond this show in fanfiction. it’s commonly used on fanfictions with more risque/disturbing elements to tell people to read the tags and that what they see there will be in the fic. dead dove do not eat. just wanted to share fun little tidbit
its so funny because my reaction is alway "i don't know what i was expecting" when i open a fic with the tag "dead dove do not eat" bc i always think eh it cant be that bad lol
@@smc299 help you’re so real for this ahdiwnidk. the real issue is when people act like dead dove: do not eat is its own tag that can be a catch all. like nooo that doesn’t tell me anything
Jessica Walter DOMINATES the scene whenever she's on screen! She was also in Dinosaurs, before Arrested Development, and later she was in Archer (playing a character scarily similar to Lucille Bluth in the best way possible lol). I believe she was also in a bunch of isolated episodes of MANYYY TV shows and a Clint Eastwood movie. Definitely recommend adding Archer to your always growing (I assume) list of shows to react to, the humour is very much inspired by Arrested Development's!
This is possibly the funniest show of all-time. The George Michael and Maeby pairing just gets better and better, while Buster and Tobias get crazier and crazier. This show hasn't even gotten as weird as it's going to. 😂
To answer your question: it’s one of my favorites. I also think the later seasons are still good (not brilliant but good) as long as you watch the original cut of season 4. I wouldn’t say it’s the best ever because I think most aspects of a show (humor, relationships, social commentary, expressions) really reflect the time it was made and sometimes you can identify with it and sometimes you don’t. I think you can compare cleverness, story arc etc. but if you don’t like the topics or feel of the show, those don’t matter
Also: if you like Jessica Walter's character (the mother) in this show, you'll love her character in "Archer" (2009). The show has the same level/speed of humor (though Archer falls off in quality PRECIPITOUSLY in the later seasons); definitely worth a watch.
"ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT" WAS EARLY ON A NON-LAUGH TRACK COMEDY SERIES. "THE OFFICE" (BRITISH SERIES) WAS EARLY IN "NON-LAUGH TRACK,TOO. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤❤❤❤❤ RON HOWARDS WHOLE FAMILY SHOWS UP LATER ON👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 The characters are hilarious!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 So many double entendres!!!
I’ve heard it called the first DVR necessary show. Back when TiVo was cool and all lol. But it’s so good to be able to pause and rewind and watch again so you don’t miss things. And DVRs were just becoming a thing
Speaking of unconventional tv comedies, have you guys watched Community? I feel like it would be an interesting one for you. Definitely a personal favorite!
I think a very poignant critique I heard of the Netflix was that it lacked the chemistry between the actors. That chemistry is really the magic of these early seasons and the Netflix episodes lacked that because by that point, the cast members had all become too big and too busy to easily get all together. They instead tried to focus on individual characters, which just didn’t feel the same
Excellent reaction. This is one of the very best shows of all time. YT introduced me to your channel because its algo knows that I love blind reactions to it, despite them being exceedingly rare... and good ones are even rarer. This is a GREAT one. If you're enjoying it this much already, then I cannot WAIT for you to see what's to come. That's gonna be a big ol' subscribe from me. "--CAN'T EVEN SEE WHERE THE KNOB IS"
This is by far the best comedy show with or without the Netflix seasons. However I don’t think they are necessarily as bad as people make them out to be. Yeah they’re not as good as the first seasons but that’s impossible to beat because those ones were so genius. There are still a lot of good moments in the last seasons that are worth watching imo.
I would still say Arrested Development is one of the best tv comedies of all time, despite the subpar Netflix seasons. So many great comedies fall off in the final seasons, but the greatness of the earlier seasons carry them through on the minds of viewers. I'd say Arrested Development definitely falls in that category.
The Netflix seasons happened so much later that I don't think they tarnish the original three seasons' accomplishments. Season 2 is on the short list of greatest sitcom seasons of all time
While I do think there's a big difference between the last two seasons and the first, I don't think they ruined the show or are as terrible as some people think at all. It's obviously up to personal opinion, but I think if you decide to react to more than the first three seasons, I hope you can put the prominent opinions about those seasons aside and go at them with an open mind, just because reactions to a show expecting to hate it and picking out only the less good things are honestly not fun to watch!
Agreed. The last 2 are not bad, but I feel it is only funny in hindsight. I was also confused by Ron Howard as a character on the show while also narrating.
If you like Jessica Walter in this as Lucille and you haven't watched it, check out the animated series Archer. She voices a very similar but cruder character, Mallory.
Seasons 4 & 5 are definitely NOT “terrible”. In fact something they do brilliantly in S4 is pay off a joke that isn’t even set up until later. Never seen anything like it.
I've been a fan of the show for a long time and when they made the netflix seasons I was hopeful it would be just as good. It isn't, BUT it isn't terrible either. Those two seasons are probably still better than a lot of what is put out there, it's just when you're comparing those seasons to the original three, which were so incredibly good, it feels like they are terrible. But, I also can see the point of just stopping after the first 3 seasons too.
The problem with Netflix wasn't anything other than the writing turned the characters from lovable a-holes to dark, deeply disturbing despicable people who were over the edge into psychotic.
I think it's weird that you guys are dogging the Netflix era based solely on what people are telling you. I concede there is a decline in quality but some of the best jokes and lines are from those seasons. The main story really isn't resolved until the first Netflix season, and some jokes set up in the earlies episodes don't pay off until the final season. I feel the writing was as good as it ever was, but didn't feel as organic because it was so difficult for performers to work around each other's schedules. Having George Michael and Maybe in college instead of high school also changed the family dynamic because Michael's paternal role was so much lessened. The final season is a bit bizarre because it's rare that multiple characters are involved in intertwining storylines, but they do something absolutely genius in writing. The episodes are designed to work in random order which is absolutely astonishing. There's sort of call back jokes for lines that haven't happened yet, they work in either order, but in a different context. It's sort of a cross between a non-linear Tarantino style narrative and a choose your own adventure. I actually see it as somewhat offensive that you guys dismiss those seasons outright... one is the series conclusion, and the other is one of the most experimental works of art in history. The show certainly loses some of the heart since characters aren't forced by their circumstances to interact as much, but the chronologically spastic nature of the final season is pure genius. For a time Netflix offered a shuffle option for that season. As a fan, I understand how it was disappointing, but as a creative person or a critic, it's absolutely fascinating.
Personally, I think the constant self-referential jokes in this show is actually why it failed. By the 3rd episode it wasn't something you could just tune into and watch without being completely lost. It turned off the average viewer since it was airing before binging and streaming at taken off. Also back then it was way easier to get away with things like sexual innuendo on network TV. It was even wilder on other networks; just look at FX and early Sunny In Philly episodes.
There are jokes being set up right now that aren't going to fully pay off until the third season. The writing here is epic.
I was thinking the same thing. The callbacks on this show are genius.
I love how they noticed Tobias is in the shower in the jeans shorts....."There are tens of us"
Dozens!!
Jessica Walter was so wonderfully funny, and “dead dove, do not eat” is A++
She was so perfectly cast in this.

I have a tshirt that says "There's Always Money in the Banana Stand."

Jessica Walter was famous for her role in the 1971 film “Play Misty for Me” with Clint Eastwood.

If you can watch the original cut of season 4, there were some of the funniest moments of television set up and paid off masterfully.
Speaking of unconventional tv comedies, have you guys watched Community? I feel like it would be an interesting one for you. Definitely a personal favorite!
I personally loved some episodes from the last seasons.
I've seen a lot of comments to the effect. Apparently there was some weird editing choices in season 4 that everyone hated.
I loved the editing…..by the end of the season you see how it was all tied together.

I remember trying to spread the message of this show on Myspace! Then I'd drive to Lego Land on my hog.

"--CAN'T EVEN SEE WHERE THE KNOB IS"
The star of the show is Ron Howard's narration
He's so perfectly deadpan.
I really like the Netflix seasons! Season4 (prior to the reshuffling of episodes) was great
This is by far the best comedy show with or without the Netflix seasons. However I don’t think they are necessarily as bad as people make them out to be. Don't know if you guys have watched Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but watching you guys react to it would be so great.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 for the TH-cam algorithm god
With the passing of Martin Mull I’m excited for you to meet his Gene Parmesan character in later episodes
If you like Jessica Walter in this as Lucille and you haven't watched it, check out the animated series Archer.

Lucille is such an icon

Yeah the season 4 and 5 hate is greatly exaggerated
Best of all time? It's definitely way up there but I'd probably put it at number two. The funniest has to be Fawlty Towers.
I've been a fan of the show for a long time and when they made the netflix seasons I was hopeful it would be just as good. It isn't, BUT it isn't terrible either. Honestly season 4 is like one of my favorite pieces of television.
The revival seasons on Netflix were not terrible. They were pretty good, just not on the same level as the originals.
The problem with Netflix wasn't anything other than the writing turned the characters from lovable a-holes to dark, deeply disturbing despicable people who were over the edge into psychotic.
Season 4 is definitely not bad, I love it. season 5 is not great.
No touching!!
I'm up!
That's that good shit

Honestly, we are loving the show so much, we are discussing doing all 5 seasons now.
Personally, I think the constant self-referential jokes in this show is actually why it failed. By the 3rd episode it wasn't something you could just tune into and watch without being completely lost. It turned off the average viewer since it was airing before binging and streaming at taken off.
