@@sipher3516 what you describe is one state of torque vectoring. If you have the ability to do that why not send different turning speed and torque levels to each wheel for improved high speed handling on the road, and tighter turning as well as better control off road. I don’t know, but if the Hummer could do dynamic torque vectoring you would think they would be advertising it instead of saying they have the much less capable rear locker.
@@larry4fire I think it is doing that when the locker is not engaged. What I meant was, when you engage the real locker, it locked the two motors to the same speeds.
@@sipher3516 I don’t know more about this than anyone else. Hope you are right. But it strikes me as odd if you can individually control the two motors on the rear for speed and torque, why do you need a locking mechanism? One possible reason for a mechanical locker is to transfer the torque from the motor turning uselessly in the air to the other wheel, that wouldn’t happen with an electronic torque vectoring system. It would just shut down the motor if it sensed the wheel spinning in the air.
I love how “the greatest off-roader” GM came out with has an OPTIONAL spare tire. And that spare tire blocks your rear view/rear view mirror camera and takes up 50% of your bed space.
It is cool, if I had more disposable income maybe. But I'd rather have the lightning I think. I like having a somewhat usable bed for HD runs. I thnk an XLT with extended battery to keep that price down a bit. Kind of absurd how much they charge for the larger battery though. Battery density isn't quite there yet for me on trucks. I'd rather have my XLT 2.7 ecoboost back if I were to get a truck again at this point in time, it worked well for what I needed. Even my Model 3 I get a bit of range anxiety in the winter, especially here in MN. I travel all over the state for work so having that piece of mind in cold temps with a gasser would be nice again. But I certainly like not having to worry about changing oil and other maintenance checks anymore. When battery energy density gets about 25-50% better and charging locations get closer to parity with gas stations, I'd love to get a truck like the lightning. The northern half of MN is pretty sparse for charging options right now.
Great points. The Ford F-150 Lightning XLT trim can be equipped with CoPilot 360 Assist 2.0, and it is the "Assist" part that is required for really nice hands-free operation using either Bluecruise or with Openpilot (which is even better, not just on mapped highways).
All these off roaders are getting to be unobtainable with the price they are making them. No one will be touching these for under 120k realistically. Hopefully a company can make a sub 50k EV off roader
Wrangler 4XE Willys can give you an all electric off roading experience for around $50k with the tax credit, and I'd expect the Recon to be somewhere in that area as well.
Nice overview with some positive words for the Hummer EV! Review the Hummer SUV when you can... More comparison like for AC outlets -- what power output? Nowhere near Ford Pro Power Onboard (9600W), right?
Interesting vehicle but I just don't like it as much as I thought I would. The switch being broken already reminded me it's GM. It's way to heavy. It has a huge battery that isn't that great because the vehicle is so inefficient. It has amazing horsepower that is wasted trying to push 9000 pounds around. The Rivian beating it in a race was surprising. The final thing is it's just like the old Hummers, it's so big it's impractical for anything.
I see that they've brought over the infuriating electric tailgate buttons from the 2019-2022 Sierra/Silverado trucks. I have a '19 Silverado RST and that is pretty much the only thing that I hate about it.
@@lonerider5315 no, not that it SHOULD be heavy, just saying that it's so heavy, I see that weight impeding it's off road capability for a lot, so I don't see it being useful for anything except overlanding on trails where weight isn't much of an issue.
@@mybro727 nah, I love my jeep, but I grew up in a GM family, my first vehicle was a Silverado, and I heavily considered a Z71 Colorado when I got my Wrangler. I have no bias against trucks, GM, EVs, or anything else. But realistically, that hummer is as heavy as two wranglers stacked on top of each other. Yeah, it's got big 35" tires and lots of ground clearance and tech to help you, but 9,500 lbs is still incredibly heavy for an off roader. Please don't mistake genuine criticism for fanboyism. I'm a fan of any and all off roaders. But even a fully built and armored Jeep is going to be several thousand pounds lighter than the Hummer. The weight will be an impediment.
Roman keeps talking about how the Hummer charged faster than anything he has seen. It charged at less than 500 miles per hour while the Tesla charges up to 1000 miles per hour.

I'm not complaining too much or picking on anybody in particular, but more personally wondering.... A family of five with a Mortgage and normal bills, how do they afford the monthly payment and insurance of any vehicle that cost 60k to 100k+? I've seen some of the monthly payments for some of the newer vehicles that people pay, then the insurance on top of that, it's the same or more than the mortgage on our home is. I just can't fathom paying that per month for something a person doesn't even own outright until it's paid for after 4-6 or so years of payments.

Since the steering wheel isn't mechanically connected to the wheels it doesn't need to be a wheel at all. In fact theoretically you could drive an EV with something like an Xbox controller. The car doesn't care where it gets its input data from.
While you aren't wrong, think about how many people would NOT be able to adapt to that compared to using a steering wheel their entire lives. I can just see people crashing into things regularly.
@@terrarecon Maybe, but I've operated equipment with joysticks and levers and some configurations are more intuitive. Our minds are very good at adapting to change. 5:22 Quick note about the Hummer EV spare tire in the bed. As an avid off-roader, I can tell you, we do NOT want to have to pull a spare out from under the truck if we are in snow, mud, a sand pit, or a hug up on a rock, or just in a bad position. While bed space in the Hummer EV is taken up a little, it "IS THE BEST OPTION" for off-roading between these trucks. Anyone who has ever had to change to the spare while off-road in a truck in the middle of nowhere of no man's land knows exactly what I'm talking about. Take your pick, less bed space or not being able to get the spare out from under the truck because you are in a precarious position??
Plus it's not going to rust in place in the winter. I'm in New England with a 9-year-old 4runner, I'm pretty sure that there's no way I'm getting that spare tire down if I ever need it.
@@trailrunnah8886 It is probably fine. It would take some major issues to make a spare not drop. But if you are in doubt, why not take the 5 minutes to test it? Then your mind will rest easier.
@@MrChadx1 whenever I think of dropping it, I always think twice because I'm afraid I'll get it about halfway down, then the mechanism will stick and I won't be able to lower it or raise it and it'll just be hanging. A coworker had that happen to his pickup once.
@@trailrunnah8886 Would it not be better to find that out at home (or parked outside a mechanics shop if you are more comfortable being close to someone that can help) than when you are on the side of the interstate on a Sunday night when everything is closed and it's pouring rain? Test that thing out already! Ha. ;) Worrying that you will have issues is MORE reason to test it; not less. And while you have it down, air it up to max pressure (not just recommended pressure; to the max pressure that your spare tire will take which will give you some leeway since you are not checking it often and it will lose pressure over time). It may currently be flat or at least low pressure if you haven't checked it all these years. I drop mine every year or two and check air pressure. But then, I have tire plugs and air compressor with me, too. Someone that doesn't should get in the habit of checking the air pressure of their spare tire once a year.
@@MrChadx1 That's a really good point, I agree. Maybe I'll take your advice this weekend and drop it. Although I do carry a plug kit and a compressor in the vehicle at all times as well, so my preference would be to just fix the tire on the vehicle. If I rip open the sidewall on a trail, yeah I'll need the spare. I've actually been looking around at some sort of a rear carrier, but they're so expensive.
A 37.1 foot turning circle is impressive for a railroad car like this, but its not all that impressive for off-roaders. A 4Runner does it in 37.4 feet without rear steer. This is one of those technologies that isn't so much about making it more capable as it is making it acceptable given its size. As for consumption. Yeah, its shit for an EV, but even 1.1 miles/Kwh is nearly 34 MPGe so still pretty great if you compare it to MPG.
@Frugal Family Living No question. My comment was in reference to the conspicuous consumption comment of the Hummer EV. Yeah, its a wasteful EV, but its really not that hard on energy compared to ICE, in fact its pretty great. I couldn't care less when Hummer EV owners run out of range. Even still, a 6 gallon tank at 34 mpg is still 200 miles. Still, anything that can off-road for 200 miles on 6 gallons would be amazing. Its too bad that you can't put a few more "gallons" in with Jerry cans.
This thing looks “cool” and “capable” but I smell bailouts required in the next couple of years for our automakers again. The unobtainable offerings they are wanting to push are toys instead of functional vehicles. No progress here, just overpriced bloat.
“This trail doesn’t need a locked diff”…”the torque is jerky, and the tires spin if I don’t force it to go faster with momentum” I feel like you are stuck in a mindset of how the truck should be driven, and contradicting yourself in the process. You don’t remove two tires off a dual because it isn’t hauling/towing heavy, and you shouldn’t avoid locking the diff when the tires slip because the trail isn’t extreme.
Hummer EV is the ultimate beach truck. Enough room for family and beach stuff. Convertible. Good tire setup for sand. Tall enough for dunes. Comfy air ride. Enough range to not worry about it.
This is a bit off-topic, but could you guys try to replicate Hoovie's Model A towing test? I ask because his range loss is higher expected, especially with an empty trailer. I'm not saying he's a liar, as he might have overlooked something, but he does have an extremely large influence. EDIT: Make sure to account for air density! I keep forgetting you guys live a mile higher than me.
How did TFL get its Hummer? Tom Moloughney from inside EVs had to go to Michigan to test. He had trouble charging it from 0-100% on a DC fast charger, did you have any problems? Also Roman, you turn on EVs not start them .
They were able to raise enough capitol by selling other vehicles in the TFL fleet that they didn’t need to consider selling the Lightning, even stating as such in a couple videos because they didn’t want to rush the review of the Lightning. I think they are finding the Hummer hard to acquire quickly with so many back orders, so GM lent them this unit to be able to compare directly to the Lightning while both are still hot topics for the TH-cam algorithm.
For the cost of installing an 80 amp circuit and custom outlet/plugs, you might as well spend a little more to get a high voltage level 3 charger installed and then use wires that won’t require She-Hulk to carry over and plug in to the truck.
Wait ✋️. Did I hear a door rattle when closing the driver side door on the Hummer? Oh I've been wanting to ask. Does the Hummer or any EV have mode that eliminates all unnecessary electronic stuff to conserve power ?
This video is almost like sitting in the truck with Roman, talking about likes, dislikes, and opinions. I was surprised at the "engine" sound - almost sounded like a V8 in there instead of 3 electric motors. Does the Hummer give you options for "engine" sound?
There’s no “range anxiety” in a Hummer EV boasting upwards of 325 miles of range on a full charge and 350 kw charging capabilities. This ain’t a Ford Lightning. 😂
GM’s energy density and cost was so poor that they decided to obscure it in an expensive, audacious, overpriced, and overweight vehicle disguised as exclusive and different. If this were an ICE truck it would flop.
Nah, the Lyric has 1/2 the pack and achieves around 318 in range, and its a bit bigger than a Tesla Mode X with this 80 something kw. Although, GMs tend to get or exceed their range estimates, where Tesla typically is over estimated by 10-20% I've noticed. My 22 Model S says 375 but if I drive even at 70 on a trip, I get maybe 325 best. The Hummer has proved to get its rated range; people are seeing 350-400 even.
I think the rivian is a more direct competitor - comes in both SUV and truck form. Very much lifestyle vehicles. The f150 lighting is meant to be more just like a normal truck.
I'm confused on GM's marketing when it comes to advertising the hummer power. They claim 1000 HP but 11500 lb. ft lbs of torque. No that is not a typo - 11500, Anyone have any feedback on this?
It’s 11500 ft-lbs at the wheels. Traditionally, torque is measured at the engine, not the wheels. However, when you measure it at the wheels, it’s multiplied because of the gearbox and the wheel itself. The bigger the wheel the higher the torque. Just like when you use a longer wrench, torque goes up.
Cool tech but it seems like it is built kind of shoddy and cheap for the price. The door sounds just like the door on my daughter's 14 year old Audi TT with the panel falling off every time you shut it. Looks likes the switches might be just as poorly built as the Audi's as well. I'd much rather have the R1T or the Lightning.
Not really and apples to apples comparison. The Ford Lightning is configured to match the model they sell the most of. Now that I have on, I drive around town and I see crew cab short boxes with not very much clearance everywhere I go. People don’t buy trucks that look like the lightning for off Roading. I think it’s tempting to take it off road because EVs good at off-roading.
People boast about how cheap EV charging is, that is until the powers that be (outlaw) petrol and decide to price gouge electric more that petrol, I do hope the power grid will sustain the EV development but to be continued...
That's the thing right? Eventually it's going to cost like a hundred bucks every time you need to charge this thing up. I wouldn't be surprised if the oil companies start branching off into the electricity industry. As far as the grid, I have little faith that there is any will anywhere to spend the necessary money to upgrade. On the other hand, maybe setting these aggressive goals for Evie adoption in 2035 will be the motivation that's needed to get the grid in shape. Instead of just kicking the can down the road, they have a solid date for when they will need to be able to make this happen.

It simulates a locker by having each rear motor sync up and spin at the same rate and speed.
Id be curious to see someone modify and hypermile the Hummer EV
I don't know about cross-shopping a RIvian, but it is also being sold as a lifestyle vehicle, complete with camping gear.
All these off roaders are getting to be unobtainable with the price they are making them. No one will be touching these for under 120k realistically. Hopefully a company can make a sub 50k EV off roader
Hopefully the Jeep Recon is “reasonbly” priced

This vehicle will not age well at all.
I see that they've brought over the infuriating electric tailgate buttons from the 2019-2022 Sierra/Silverado trucks. I have a '19 Silverado RST and that is pretty much the only thing that I hate about it.
How does the Hummer EV compare in size to the H1?
The vehicle is so heavy I just can't imagine it's good for anything other than overlanding.
Overlanding should be heavy??
I think you got that completely wrong
I think the real issue you’re having with seeing any capability is that it’s a Hummer and not a Jeep. 🤡
@@backwoodstherapy anyone who off roads knows weight is the enemy.
Torque is good, hp is related to velocity. That's why 4-Low is a torque multiplier with gears. It increases the torque but slows the rate.
Roman keeps talking about how the Hummer charged faster than anything he has seen. It charged at less than 500 miles per hour while the Tesla charges up to 1000 miles per hour.
What Tesla had a 212 kWh battery pack? Why are you triggered souls always running to the comparison of Tesla products that have had 10+ years to perfect their battery chemistry to first generation trucks like the Hummer EV? It’s embarrassing to watch you Tesla fanboys go out so bad.
500 Miles into ours… traded a ford lightning in on purchase… GREAT SUV/truck/convertible/sports “truck”!! Range is great compared to the ⚡️.
Going to be great to watch big 3 (4 with Tesla) compete and better market!
Great job on video… keep them coming.
Last point… OS on Hummer is way better then ford…. I am shocked GMC does not use “phone as key” or cards like Tesla.
Or am I missing something.
I just can't fathom paying that per month for something a person doesn't even own outright until it's paid for after 4-6 or so years of payments.
it sounds so noisy when you accelerate. or it's the powertrain ?
It's the augmented engine noise to make it sound like a gas engine. I would turn that off if possible.
@@andrewt9204 that's what I thought. in the video it sounds really like a small engine. cal be useful in the cities but I also would turn it off almost on off road. hope it automatically stops over a certain speed

I was just pointing out that the traditional controls are no longer needed and entirely new ways can be designed especially with the guidance systems that are evolving that make driving safer than ever.
@@socratesDude I'm not disagreeing with you. Although, I will say, "some" people's minds adapt. People can barely drive with the configuration we currently have now, if you get my meaning. 😂

Is it just me or do they have a muffled engine “roar” inside the Hummer? I could swear I’m hearing one under Romans talking.
I would love to take my gladiator through this trail but im stuck in freaking new jersey where the trails are flat and illegal
You got the fake engine noises on?!😂
A 37.1 foot turning circle is impressive for a railroad car like this, but its not all that impressive for off-roaders.
“This trail doesn’t need a locked diff”…”the torque is jerky, and the tires spin if I don’t force it to go faster with momentum”
I feel like you are stuck in a mindset of how the truck should be driven, and contradicting yourself in the process.

How did TFL get its Hummer? Tom Moloughney from inside EVs had to go to Michigan to test. He had trouble charging it from 0-100% on a DC fast charger, did you have any problems? Also Roman, you turn on EVs not start them .
All of your questions are answered in their other videos.
Did he say TMZ? Like the celebrity gossip site? I'll be interested in seeing how consumption is on this vs lightning/rivian/etc.
is this the ev that takes 4 days to charge
Guess you’re not selling the lightning for a Hummer EV
They were able to raise enough capitol by selling other vehicles in the TFL fleet that they didn’t need to consider selling the Lightning, even stating as such in a couple videos because they didn’t want to rush the review of the Lightning.
I think they are finding the Hummer hard to acquire quickly with so many back orders, so GM lent them this unit to be able to compare directly to the Lightning while both are still hot topics for the TH-cam algorithm.
Audi- Lamborghini should bring back the LM002 as an EV pick-up like the Hummer
DIdnt TFL prove that the Hummer has the fastest EV charging? So the statement near the end of this video with it taking a long time is contradictory.
seems more like an offensive linebacker - than a sprinter
I thought the Hummer Ev came with the larger 19.2 KW level 2 onboard charger. With an 80 amp home circuit, overnight charging should be doable.
For the cost of installing an 80 amp circuit and custom outlet/plugs, you might as well spend a little more to get a high voltage level 3 charger installed and then use wires that won’t require She-Hulk to carry over and plug in to the truck.
I am following this closely. I reserved an SUV Edition1 and I am thinking a lot of what you find here will apply.
Wait ✋️. Did I hear a door rattle when closing the driver side door on the Hummer? Oh I've been wanting to ask. Does the Hummer or any EV have mode that eliminates all unnecessary electronic stuff to conserve power ?
The Rivian can go into a low (not sure of no) consumption mode for camping etc.
This video is almost like sitting in the truck with Roman, talking about likes, dislikes, and opinions. I was surprised at the "engine" sound - almost sounded like a V8 in there instead of 3 electric motors. Does the Hummer give you options for "engine" sound?
Is it making a fake V8 noise?

Best EV off-roader? Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon definitely. And no range anxiety with a 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder running on gasoline.
There’s no “range anxiety” in a Hummer EV boasting upwards of 325 miles of range on a full charge and 350 kw charging capabilities. This ain’t a Ford Lightning. 😂

Agree 100%. A TOY.
Was I hearing piped in fake engine noise?
What a beast. I hope a bunch of rich people buy one so I can get one used in about a decade. 😂
The more I see the Hummer the more I want the Rivian.
I think the rivian is a more direct competitor - comes in both SUV and truck form. Very much lifestyle vehicles. The f150 lighting is meant to be more just like a normal truck.
Several people have put 37s on them
Easy on those doors Roman
I don't get why GM keeps putting firm seats in their trucks. No one seems to like them yet GM keeps doing it.
Just like when you use a longer wrench, torque goes up.
its called math
There is a gear reduction in the motors. Almost positive each motor makes 350hp 400tq before being multiplied
Why does it sound like it’s gas powered when your giving it gas
I will be very interested to see how Jeep has addressed the torque modulation issue with the Recon.
Ha! He stopped cuz you had the hood open! 🤣
$100k IS crazy!!!!!
Have you ever seen the truck or just the price of it? Lol.
Good luck finding one for 100K
It’s cool, but not a serious truck. Not enough range, to heavy, to big, no usable bed, and poor towing numbers. But it’s a cool toy.
