Fun Fact: R62A's on the 7 and R142A's on the 6 were supposed to temporary swaps and R62A's were originally gonna go back to the Pelham line shortly after the redbirds retire because R142A's were supposed to be converted into R188's shortly after redbirds Retire but the R188's conversion for CBTC was pushed back to 2009 and was pushed back again to 2013
And now the 6 trains are filled with the R62as however the 4/5/6/S trains are definitely gonna have brand new R262s and CBTCS one day they will eventually get there just like the 7/L/E/F/R lines Those lines now have CBTCS HOOKED up
I remember seeing these sets in the early to mid 2000's. The R62A's were also on the 6 line shortly before R142A's arrived in the late 90's to the very early 2000's, and then transferred to the 7 line. R62A's returned back to the 6 line as early as 2013 when the swap began to convert R142A's to R188's for CBTC. It was cool seeing these run on the express track between Hunts Point Avenue and Parkchester-East 177th street at 45-50mph during the peak rush hours.
The R142A 6 train was the first line and train type since birth I wasn't a huge fan on them but looking at it this was my line and train childhood and I respect R142A on the 6 and I do miss them and please stop hating on the R62A these trains are fantastic and is doing well on the 6 its just the biases that people have with it I'm usually not biased and I think these two train types are both great on the Pelham Line
I miss riding the R142as 6 trains to its not the same without the R142as on the Pelham line don't get me wrong i do respect the R62as back on the Pelham line which is 100% true and the Flushing line having CBTCS we all like the mix epipments on the Pelham line R142as and R62as on the Pelham line bring the fun back we know that the mosholu Jerome avenue 4 line do not have no CBTCS HOOKED up nowhere in the Bronx or Brooklyn

I know it won’t be until a couple years in the future (sometime between 2025-2030 to be exact) when the R262’s are delivered, but still…

Why did the remaining R142As on the 6 line have to go to the 4 line. The MTA should have just kept those remaining R142As on the 6 line and moved Jerome’s R142As there as well so that the 6 could be a mix of R142A and R62A trains and the rest of the 7 line’s R62As would have gone to the 4 train. At least there’s a possibility of them coming back when the R262 trains arrive, knowing that the express lines (2, 3, 4 and 5 lines) might need them more. Just because the 1, 3 and 6 lines have the R62 and R62A trains doesn’t mean the R262s would solely be for those lines- it’s just like the N/Q/W lines and the R211 trains. But we’ll just have to see what the MTA does when the time comes. The MTA might make the 6 line a mix of R142As and R262s, who knows?
I Love the R142As they alongside the R188s are my number 1 favorites it was fun having the R142As on the 6 while it lasted but I'm Enjoying the R142A Converts and R188s way too much same with the R142As. Its hard to believe that some of the R142A Converts now particularly the ones in the 72 & 73 series are 20 years old. I'm happy remaining R142As that stayed behind 7591 - 7655 got reassigned to Jerome Yard on the 4 line to join R142As 7656 - 7810 for better maintenance
Growing up for me (in the 90’s) all I knew was the (6) had the R33-R36 ML and the R62a’s. The (5) had all Redbirds and the (4) was a mix of Redbirds and R62’s. So when the Lex became all R142-142a’s I was happy. The 142a’s just fit perfectly for the (6). Can’t wait for the 262’s to ride the Pelham line.
@@solo6058 No. The fleet assignments should stay as they are now, but with 15 R142As reassigned for the 42nd Street Shuttle, while the R62As can add to the existing 6 line fleet of 435 R62As for service increases. Also, the Flushing Line has CBTC now. Aside from work trains, R62As can’t run on Flushing anymore.
@@soraforpresident5209 It was just a rumor over on the forums. 24 R262s are already allocated to the renovated 42nd Street Shuttle. They will be in 6-car sets, so 1 6-car train for both tracks with 2 spare units in the yard.
All of them were moved to the 7 and 4 lines 😭😭, some were turned into r188s, now the 6 train has the crappy old r62As from the 7 line, i can't wait till they're scraped and replaced by the r262s.
@Anthony Z nah that would be bad for the 4 train, they did that with the NQW and R trains by swapping the r46s and r160s which ruins the NQW lines but benefited the R line which sucked, but this time both the 4 and 6 aren't much better and in need so it wouldn't do them much help. Maybe they could give the 6 train back it's r142as in return for the r62s, but I think it's best to wait for the r262s

@Elijah broomes It’s not the most stupidest thing ever. Plus it made more sense to put them back on the 6 (the LED indicators on the R62As foreshadowed this move). As a compromise, they should temporarily take 15 R142As and reassign them not to the 6, but to the 42nd Street Shuttle. Reconfigure them into 6-car units and have them run there until the R262s arrive.
Honestly I miss them being on the 6 and at first I hated when they took away a majority of the R142As fleets off the line to give to the 7 line and the mta decided to take the remaining sets and give it to the 4 train. At first I hated the R62As sets being on the 6 train now, but let’s be real: them cars been very well maintained at the Westchester Yard honestly. Them r142A sets on the 4 train look horrible and dirty as hell on the outside.
This is why Westchester yard should of kept the R142As that they had left over, in 2018 on the last few days 7600-7610 was on the (6) that set was clean. Now it looks so dirty on the (4).
The r262’s should only Run on the 1 3 and 6 while the 2 4 and 5 lines keeps r142’s and r142a’s and the shuttle should get 5 sets of r142’s and 5 Sets of r142a’s from the 4 line while the 4 line gets only 10 sets of r262’s and keeps the rest of the r142’s and r142a’s

All remaining R142A 220 cars were installed new door motor just like R188 except door chime it will be remain old door chime just like R142 and R179.

Why did they get rid of them?
They just moved to the 7 to put CBTC on the Flushing Line.
@Elijah broomes It’s not the most stupidest thing ever. Plus it made more sense to put them back on the 6 (the LED indicators on the R62As foreshadowed this move).
As a compromise, they should temporarily take 15 R142As and reassign them not to the 6, but to the 42nd Street Shuttle. Reconfigure them into 6-car units and have them run there until the R262s arrive.

Honestly I miss them being on the 6 and at first I hated when they took away a majority of the R142As fleets off the line to give to the 7 line and the mta decided to take the remaining sets and give it to the 4 train. At first I hated the R62As sets being on the 6 train now, but let’s be real: them cars been very well maintained at the Westchester Yard honestly. Them r142A sets on the 4 train look horrible and dirty as hell on the outside.
This is why Westchester yard should of kept the R142As that they had left over, in 2018 on the last few days 7600-7610 was on the (6) that set was clean. Now it looks so dirty on the (4).

That's the reason why they have the R62AS back on the Pelham 6 line because of CBTCS is definitely gonna happen on the 7 Flushing line.
You know the R62AS was supposed to be on the 4 Jerome Ave 4 and the R142/As from the 4 Jerome Ave 4 was supposed be stayed on the Pelham 6 line.

Run on the 1 3 and 6 while the 2 4 and 5 lines keeps r142’s and r142a’s and the shuttle should get 5 sets of r142’s and 5 Sets of r142a’s from the 4 line while the 4 line gets only 10 sets of r262’s and keeps the rest of the r142’s and r142a’s
