Seriously epic. When it comes to Nordic countries the Finns and F1 are a beautiful match, but take it to the dirt and the Swedes steal the show. The original Stig showing off the true art of driving sideways.

adam hart Only fins is twelve times better then the Swedes when it comes to "dirt", Rally is the national sport in Finland.

+Filasogen Finland can have the rally. Tre Kronor kicks their arses 9/10 times.

@@Filasogen It is in Sweden too, you guys just have had more sponsor money. We have more rallies and more drivers than Finland, even though we are twice the population.

@@Calle... but yet we have still somehow more WRC champions and natural talent. I don’t want to take anything away from Sverige but it’s just a fact. Finland owns Sweden on rally roads. You can have the rallycross. Hansen family is insane, I have to admit. But back to the WRC.
I know you have rich history there too and the national rallies are competitive. In the old days, you had Ingvar Carlsson and Ove Andersson while we had Rauno Aaltonen, Timo Mäkinen, Simo Lampinen and Pauli Toivonen, the first Flying Finns in rallying, of which Aaltonen was the original one. It was close back then during the 60s and 70s, but Finland dominated Sweden in 80s, 90s and 2000s.
The list of Finnish WRC champions: 4-time champions Juha Kankkunen (with Group A, B and WRC car) and Tommi Mäkinen, 2-time champion Marcus Grönholm, one-time champions Ari Vatanen; Hannu Mikkola and Timo Salonen. Also, FIA Cup winner from ’78 Markku Alén or Mr. Maximum Attack. It was the biggest prize then in rallying so basically it’s a world championship. Markku has over 800 stage wins…crazy. He deserved so much, like the 1986 title.
Plus, we have the four youngest WRC event winners: Kalle, Jari-Matti Henri and Markku. Also the 1979 season belonged to Mikkola but Waldegård got lucky. Hannu was penalised in Monte Carlo for nothing. Those points could’ve given him the title. This has been confirmed by himself and many other sources. Obviously I’m sure Björn deserved it too. Great driver, just like Stig.
Anyway, those are your only champions and both have only one. We have 6 or basically 7 if we count Markku’s FIA Cup. Finland: 13+1 and Sweden: 2

@@max27stoner I agree with you, but you missed my point. There are more rallies in Sweden and we have more drivers than Finland, in many ways it is a national sport in Sweden.
The big difference is that it competes with a thousand other sports for sponsor money, media coverage and fame. Finland is more or less only successful in motorsport and hockey (and sometimes bandy and some skiing).
Sweden is not best in any one sport but we are involved in a lot of disciplines, all of which steal sponsors and attention from rally. In Finland this is not the case, and to be honest the main reason Finns have been present in top teams the last 30 years is becaus Timo Jouhki paid for the careers to begin with.
I don't mean Finnish drivers are bad, I just believe we have just as many good drivers in Sweden but they never had/don't have the same backing to get to the top.

    Even when the intercom cuts out ! @ 1:03 - 1:23
Lesser drivers would have panicked... Benny also keeps his cool.

I paid attention to exactly the same point.
He doesn't "forcefully push" the gear stick, but nicely enough that the gear changes.
Not such a drastic, forceful shifting is not good for the gearbox either - even if it is a racing car, a rally car.

    To be complete:
Stig Blomqvist (S) - Benny Melander (S), Ford Sierra RS Cosworth Group A - white car, blue decoration, 3 doors, rearwheeldrive, 1000 Lakes rally 1988, Finland, #4, round of the World Rally Championship. That looks like a handful (and a "footful" ;)) of a car to drive. There's no telling it where you want to go -- this is always a hard-negotiated compromise between what the driver wants and what the car wants! :D But Stig is such a masterful negotiator there!
    Fantastic footage! Thanks for sharing!

As a matter of fact, the Sierra in this 1988 video had reg plate D935 UOO.
D705SVW was on another Sierra in Portugal 1987.
However, rallycars can often not be identified by their number plates! Or maybe, mostly not ...

Stig was in a Sierra both those years (Peogeot 205 T16 in '86 btw) SS1 was (as traditionally) Laajavuori. But in '87 it was raining and in '88 it was dry, Bruno Berglund was co-driver in '87, Benny Melander in '88. This looks like the latter. Berglund sat with Vatanen in the "private" BMW M3 in '88. Stig starts to look at Benny @ 1:03 and shouts soon after, "I can't hear you!" (in Swedish). It's fixed at about 1:20 when we can hear Stig puts his foot down hard again. Seems to have been caused by a loose plug.
