I’ve recently rescued a 19 year old Blue Throated Macaw who has been improperly handled for the last 16 years. This is exactly what we’re working on right now as she has been handled only on shoulders and arms. I needed this! Thank you
Aww, oh my gosh, I love Comet so much.. the moment at 7:25 when he's trying sooo hard to reach your hand down there but can't, like he's saying "look! I can't reach! I'm trying though!" Is too dang cute 💞
Comet is so cute. I loved the way his eyes were constantly watching your hands whilst you waved them around. Trying to work out what you were cuing him to do.😊. great helpful video though. thanks.
Gosh, I get so jealous. I adopted a 25+ y/o Blue & Gold named Louie. He wasn't given a good upbringing and is now "aggressive" which I hate using that word, cause he has so much potential. He's quite spunky, lol. Time and patience. Your videos are massive helps. If I had the money I'd definitely look into getting him the help he needs to be the bird he can be.
Comet is soooo cute and what a good sport! Thanks for making this-I’m going to share with my husband who I think will really appreciate the demo- he’s worried about the bite so even when our bird looks like he’s eager to step up his hand floats down and then they are both frustrated (husband + bird)
I loved this video! It really showed me how to get the response you want. And what is easier for the bird to be comfortable giving you the response. Thank you! Gina Hetlage 🌹❤
Stepping down would also raise the issue of the bird's tail coming into contact with the perch/hand/etc. They're probably conscious of contact with the underside of their body or tail feathers.
Great video Jamie and Comet! I have a question. I recently started training my old untamed budgies and made the classic mistake of teaching them recall before step up. My budgies both fly to me quite comfortably now but stepping up is out of the question. How do I go about this? Luring doesn't seem to work as of yet. Any advice is much appreciated!
Keep shortening up your recall little by little. You will eventually go from flight to hop and then while you have momentum going try to get close enough for the step up. It may take many short sessions. Good luck!
Es muy buen vídeo. Pero me es muy diciil seguirte pues estoy con el traductor , que me traduce los subtítulos, que solo están en inglés Podría ser que los subtítulos estuvieran en español?? Muchas gracias saludos desde Barcelona
how long do you need to wait after converting to a fresh food diet will the treats be valuable? I just rescued a tiel that was on a pure seed diet and I'd love to start training with them but I have no idea what kind of treat hierarchy to work with when shes not interested in anything
Have you seen the the latest 'foster' @The Asher House has? He runs an amazing animal rescue and has recently ended up with two parrots. Wonder if a cookbook and some of your food would help him out and introduce your system to a new audience or maybe a collab at some point.....
I love ur vids and I’ve decided to get a pet parrot. I’m planing on getting a sun or green cheek conure, but am not sure what is the cage i should get for him to be happy
Love seeing Comet! Weird question, as you explain techniques Comet often does spins and other behaviors to try and get rewards. I've seen you guys call this "begging" in the past. Do you typically just ignore your birds when they "beg", since they're not doing anything on cue? Or do you reward because they did a trick? Are they begging just to get your attention?
Just from watching her videos, it seems like she mostly ignores the behavior, and tries to reset them when trying to get them to do something specific. The exception would be if they did something she’s in the process of teaching them. My example is with her cockatoo, it kept saying “hey cutie” which she didn’t treat for… but when the cockatoo started saying “thank you” she did reward the bird because she wanted to encourage the behavior. I hope that helps!
I know this isnt about budgies but i have a question my bird was sleeping no issues till for whatever reason he started flapping about his cage dunno what happened but he was very unsettled so i turned out the lights and left h when i woke up this morning he was clinging to the side of the cage by his feet hes still there and he wont go back on his perch hes not made a sound either should i be concerned?
Hello I'm new and I have an important question so I bought an indian ringneck parrot it's a girl's and is scared of me when try to handfeed it in the cage so do I have to let my parrot out of the cage to tame it?
I have a female budgie she came to our house when she was well over 7 months. Shes been with us for 3 years now and she comes on our fingers only by hopping and not taking 2 steps even when the finger is not low is there a way i could make her step up properly and go back without so much anxiety? (She wasnt neglected but there was no human interaction where she came from)
What should you do if you find out during the request to step up down whatever that your treat sucks. Do you stop training and find out what treat is the best or what? BTW thank you for zooming in so we could see. XO
My yellow headed Amazon, always gets upset and trows away a treat if i try to give it to him by hand. Even food he really likes. He just takes the treat and throws it away. But if i put the treat in his feeding bowl, he can’t get there quick enough! Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Keith.
Hold the bowl in your hand when you reward him. Keep your fingers out of sight at first, then show them gradually until he sees both the bowl and your fingers. Bring your fingers/hand mire into view until he's very comfortable with it, then phase the bowl out. Hope that helps!
Ok, I don't get this. I don't understand the difference from "step up" vs "step down". As you were showing, they are both really a step "up" except when going "down" to the flat surface. So, in the end, does that mean there really is not a step down but they are all step ups? Would it be more confusing to the bird to try to differentiate the two? Can I treat it all as step up?
To me, from watching this video: “Step up”: the bird will *step onto his trainers hand* from a surface. “Step down”: the bird will *step off the trainers hand* onto a surface. These are two different actions the bird has to do, so they probably need two different commands/cues. To make it clear to the bird what exactly you want. For example I taught my dog “wait” and “stay”. Physically for the dog they mean the same thing: don’t move. But she knows that “wait” is a temporary hold that needs to happen now, and she always freezes and looks at me. It’s a safety command. And it’s typically used when I’m free walking her. “Stay” is a more relaxed command that she might have to hold for longer but is a less serious command. Normally for tricks or a “I have to do something stay here I’ll be right back”. Although both commands tell my dog to do the same thing, don’t move, our communication is clearer when we use two different commands. So although your bird is mostly doing the same action in both commands, lifting their feet off one surface and onto another, they tell the bird two different things: “come closer to me” and “go farther from me”. I hope that helps!
I have tried nuts, seeds, fruit like died blueberries and plantain chips, I’ve even tried French fries, which my conures steal in flybys, nope. He is so stubborn.
This is off topic question...Can you feed domestic birds peanuts? Comet is such a sweetie. He’s really is cooperating. Putting your face close to all your birds is still a little unsettling for me to watch. Can you trust them?
I have one parrot that will NOT step up. I’ve had him since Dec 31 2017. He’s a 17 yr old Quaker. He loves me but will not step up. He will warn me and if I push it, will bite and Quaker bites really hurt and draw blood. He has bitten me to the bone. If he gets spooked, and lands on the floor, he will step up but only then. I know Quakers are stubborn, but I wish he would step up. It’s just this year that he lets me scratch his head.
Luring does not work for my Quaker because he does not find anything appealing enough to work for it. He loves apple pieces but will not work for it. He won’t take anything. Good thing he’s a funny boy.
I love Comet’s body language when he pulled your hand closer to him, Jamie. He was telling you what to do perfectly. 😂
Lol...I love he pulled your hand closer, clear communication.

He’s the perfect costar for this one! Love all his voluntary spins on the perch.
He is such a good sport. So cute that he tries even though he knows it wont work.
A real trouper! He loves Jamie!
Comet: "I'm a pro... I better be getting paid!" :P
Comet is my fav in your flock. Chill bird.

Comet is so willing to do anything, try anything.
That bird adores you!! What a beautiful animal!!!
I love he's bobbing his head and moving around like "hm yes. Conversation."
And his floofy head feathers! Makes him look like a baby. Aww. 🦜
Great video! This was really helpful. --Goodness-sweetness that cute squeeze-noise at the end 🤗💛🦜Comet is so adorable!
Not a SINGLE foot check?!?! Comet, is that really you?!?! 😍
Our favorite fluff monster! A great refresher video on the basics!

Such a great video. The small adjustments make such a huge difference.
What a good boi!! Some of those step downs he is thinking “I thought I had you trained better than this!“😂😂
I just love Comet! Can you please do the same kind of video with one of your conures?
✨training tips I didn’t know I needed✨
Thank you!
Thank you. The stepping up onto something is so simple but is something I would regularly forget.
Just love seeing Comet lift his foot over and over in anticipation of getting closer ti you and the treat1
He’s so adorable I love him so much ❤️🦜
He's so happy but sooooo cunzuzzled for his step up! He's like wow food yummy. But why I get this?? Lol. I love comet so cuuute
Lovely video 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
I love Comet ☄️ and his "foot checks"!

So proud of comet for not one foot check... unless it's taken the form of spin

Very interesting 👍thanks I have a 12yrs macaw she lovely penny 👍

Good point! I hadn’t considered that.
Really like your channel a lot. You remind me of Kamp Kenan but with birds.
Daw when he shows her where her hand should be. LOL "No human you have forgotten let me help you."
Would love to see Cressie in some training videos ! Feels like we don’t see her much xx
She appeared in a video with Dave recently.
Cool demonstration
Awesome video!!
He is absolutely beautiful

Hmm, that might be a request for TH-cam? I see a lot of comments on parrot channels in Spanish and Portuguese.
Yay!! The fluffball

Good video. If I try to handle our Harequin Macaw like that, I'd loose some fingers.
Love Comet. Does he ever get in trouble? Other than time when Comet and Tusa were fighting with Jinxy.

What about a bird that bites when your hand is offered for a step up, even with the promise of a treat?
I love ur vids and I’ve decided to get a pet parrot. I’m planing on getting a sun or green cheek conure, but am not sure what is the cage i should get for him to be happy

I was wondering the exact same thing

HIm trying to step down from the slippery surface was so sad. ;-;
Adding you hand up and making a deep v for the bird to have to go down then try to go up your shoulder is hard so comet stays on her hand

I believe she uses pine nuts for her macaws?
Did't work with food he try to atack me !!
