The Active Volcano in Portugal; Madeira

  • One of the largest and most beautiful Portuguese islands is the island of Madeira. Yet, few people who live on this island realize that this volcano is still active. It erupted in the last 10,000 years and will certainly erupt again. This video will discuss this volcano and mention what its future hazards are.

    Madeira actually means Wood in Portuguese. The island was so named because it was very densely wooded when it was discovered.

      @Henrique Capela And Madeira's capital city of Funchal was named due to the abundance in the region of "funcho" (fennel).

    The island of Madeira could be best classified as in the waning stages of shield volcano related activity. Its eruptions are now rather infrequent, as the last one occurred in 4500 BC and was small.

    I have had the privilege of visiting Madeira back just after the terrible flash floods which killed several dozen people. The island is a volcanologists dream and you cannot miss the physical evidence of how it was created. The topography is absolutely stunning and is such that the airport had to be built on stilts across a bay due to the lack of available land. Landing there is an experience in itself… I spent most of my time driving around the island, a challenge to get anywhere in a short time such is the difficulty of the terrain. Having said that the road networks and countless tunnels is very good just negated by the topography. The northern coastline is incredible with verticals cliffs of 400m plus rising straight up from the sea… I would go back there in a heartbeat…

    Wow! Thank you GeologyHub, I requested this video and you delivered. It was so interesting and I learnt a lot, including the fact that the rock at Porto Da Cruz was once a volcano (unless I’m misunderstanding) as I always thought it was. I love visiting this island and do so as frequently as I can but I didn’t know that the volcano of Madeira was still active and that there sounds to be a reasonable chance it could erupt again. Thank you!

      Puerto Rico was indeed volcanic but hasn't erupted for about 20-60 million years and its movement from the east pacific into its current postion caused its volcanic peaks to like be warped and form a sort of system of valleys and ridges we see on it today(theory)

    I've been having a great time watching your Volcanoes of the World playlist and since this is the only one on the list I have actually been to (without knowing it was still classified as active at the time), I thought I'd leave a comment on this one! I find all the videos really interesting, but learning something new about a place I visited recently just makes it even more enjoyable! The simple joy of seeing the picture of the natural pools of Porto Moniz and getting to say "oh hey I stood there too". Didn't know it was the result of a lava flow at the time, though!

  • @adriennefloreen
    @adriennefloreen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You should make a video about cities next to still active volcanoes built right on top of lava flows from previous eruptions. The island you're showing in this video looks like La Palma rotated to a different angle, and like La Palma it has a city that's built where lava flowed the last time that will likely get buried in lava the next time the volcano erupts. I also see a lot of islands where there are cities built on flat areas left by previous collapses or areas previously hit by pyroclastic flows. It doesn't seem like a good idea for people to choose these areas of these islands to build cities. It's like a set up for future disaster, in my opinion. Almost every inhabited volcanic island has one of these cities which were most likely built where they were located because it was the only part of the island that was flat. But I'd rather live in a hilly city than directly in the path of a lava flow.

    As a native Madeiran, this video was very interesting and entertaining to watch! Because of its volcanic origins, there is a lot of basalt in Madeira island, though I did not know until months ago that the island is still volcanically active. Thank your for your detailed explanations as well!

    By accident, I've found an interesting article on the Internet, that says Norway and New England are expected to have volcanoes within a few million years. Do you think this asssessment is credible, and if so, maybe consider making a video about this topic?

    • @GeologyHub
      @GeologyHub  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Norway already has 1 volcano (beerenberg). As for New England it’s quite possible (deep magmatic activity) but unsure when in the distance future eruptions will occur. Definitely several million years from now at a minimum

    • @sirmonkey1985
      @sirmonkey1985 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends on the situation.. for shipping submarine volcanoes can be very dangerous.. but on a global impact scale surface volcanoes have the potential to be worse. to use as an example, the submarine volcano near Madagascar had been erupting for a few years and no one had any clue it was happening other than a couple earthquakes being felt in Mayotte.

    Do pico en Azores de unos 2.300. De altitud
    Teide en Canarias 3.718 m sobre el nivel del mar y 4.000 m bajo el mar, lo que le situa en el tercer lugar de los edificios volcanicos mas altos del planeta, si se tiene en cuenta la medicion desde el lecho del Oceano.
    Do fogo en cabo verde, de unos 2.800 m.sobre el nivel del mar. Todos en el Atlantico.

      there is a threshold of 10,000s of no volcanic activity or any geothermal activity fueled by magma to exist for a volcano to not be active(with the exceptions of cinder cones that are monogenetic and once they stop erupting they are classified as extinct by default)
