I didn't realize there was a Clan refit. The original is one of my favorite 60-tonners.
A mech I never loved turns into a whole Raven binary as soon as I get my ks.

The Merlin was always a bigger, stronger Vindicator to me. They have a similar load out and identical movement profile. I never really gave it enough thought, but this? I like this.
Oh wow that is an interesting comparison I had never made - they are VERY similar. Good call!!
It's hard not to love upscaling the Vindicator's overall combat profile. I wanted to make a Solaris VII 'mech for a Capellan militiaman to pilot in the early post-Clan Invasion years. I ended up taking a CN9-AL and turning it into a big Vindicator just by using Endo-Steel and Double Heat Sinks to save weight. It has an ER PPC, LRM-10 w/ Artemis IV, 2 ER Mediums in the CT, 1 in the HD, and I even added the Small Laser on the LA. And it has the jump jets.
I think this mech absolutely fits the role of defender. Built to last, punches at all ranges, and to top it all off it can jump while doing it all. No i havent run this thing at all but in a defenders role this thing is a massive headache. This thing is a city monster for sure.
It is absolutely wild how many options we have in the ilClan era. Still not sold on the story, but I wouldn't turn down those improved heavy lasers. Sweet tech there.
Funny you say this. I was just thinking about why people love 3/4th succession war and 3050 so much. I think it’s just the fact that you know what’s out there.
There are a mind-number amount of variants once you get to 31xx - it’s crazy! For better or worse, I guess. 🙂
Jump capable heavy witha good spread of weapons, great heat control and damage mitigation? Holy cow this thing is really nice!
The Succession Wars era Merlin is a cheap, solid, reliable heavy trooper Mech perfect for building a garrison force around. Its mix of weapons allow it to do just about everything you need a Mech to do, and fulfill nearly any role except for scout. It just makes a lot of sense, especially for Periphery nations and militias. The Merlin C takes all that and applies Clan tech to it making it even more survivable and harder hitting. It makes a lot of sense as a second-line garrison Mech, and a great propaganda tool for the Ravens to demonstrate their commitment to protecting the Outworlds Alliance.
I especially love the lore around the Merlin, particularly the 2 Shrapnel stories about the owner of the company that designed the Merlin. The Merlin and the Marshall are probably the 2 Mechs that pirates hate the most considering how many raids they've foiled, and pirates they've brought to justice.

Didn’t know there was a clan rebuild. Love the merlin, I think of the merin and chameleon being the Toyota Camries of the mech world, to the Corollas that are wasp and stinger :P
LOL fantastic. I got my Merlin with the TRD package, so the command couch has perforated leather with red stitching. It also has gloss black actuators.
Love ferro-lam armor. That -1 damage is great
I want to get a Merlin mini based off of the new art.
It does look a lot better, from severe wonk to something appealing.
Excellent review, I wasn't aware of the existence of this mech, so it was a nice sleeper to see. Too bad it's only available to the Snow Ravens, even through the ilClan era, but that's about the only knock on it. Master Po approves!

ERPPC+Streak LRM are one of my favorite combos, and somehow underrated. I understand why people do hate on streaks as regular lrms ,at a first glance, seem much better. They are half the tonnage, but they also use cluster table AND waste ammo and heat. If you are not gonna use Artemis V or indirect fire, i feel like quite often Streak Lrms are slightly ahead. 3xSLRM5s will have 6 heat and deal 15 damage for 6tons, cLRM20A will have 6 heat and deal 16 damage for 7 tons, and is alot less efficient for ammo AND can be disrupted by any ecm, while streak lrm only loses their bonus at angel ecm which is far rarer. Not to mention, using less crit space and being more resistant to disabling through crits. (losing a single SLRM5 stings alot less compared to cLRM20A)

Dude I want a BOOK. They are saying its coming soon. This merlin may be in the one they released last year, but idk.
The Merlin C is great, and even tankier than the Battlytics suggests due to the way Ferro-Lam works. See, if something only does 1 damage normally (such as LBX Cluster rounds or the Odd-Man Out 1 damage LRM volley), the armor just flat out negates it, as well as having a far greater effect against weapons that deal less than 5 damage such as SRMs (which gets its damage cut in half due to rounding down). This greatly increases its surviveability against units that thrive off of Death By A Thousand Cuts to take down foes compared to the default Awesome that is used in the benchmark.

It was always advertised as raw pragmatism, being well rounded. The Clan upgrades certainly level it up to ilclan era power creep. Can't say I'll ever stoop to run something as silly as "Improved Heavy Medium Lasers"! LOL, what is that even. Next we'll all be running Hyper Super Micro X-Pulse Hybrid Large Lasers.

I'm not familiar with this mech or a lot of the really advanced tech, so thanks very much for explaining the weapon & armor rules. The damage reduction on that armor is pretty nice, and overall looks like a solid mech. I do kind of wonder how many adjectives they can stick in front of the word "laser" though. Wish they just call it a med laser but add 4th gen or something simple like that to indicate what era it's from. Thanks for the video Mr. Aaron.

I think it would be interesting to see an unofficial BV3.0 using battlytics to determine how much each mech is worth.
The problem is that BV doesn't really work on a by mech basis, it works at a construction level. You would have to analyze the data, figure out what makes mechs work then design an equation that gives you the answers you want consistently.
Unless you want to throw that out the window, lose customs and make BV subjective. While customs probably wouldn't bother me too much (it's surprising how hard it is to make a mech that hasn't been tried before), I don't want BV to go the way of 40k pts.
Right - the Eff score is based on BV so it really could serve more as a “modifier” somehow … but it’s so relative to terrain, mission, opfor, etc… I’m not sure there is really ANY good system to determine the value of a unit in BT 🙂
Have you considered running vehicles through Battlytics? It would require a lot of work to make work I imagine (make the changes for the quad look like a joke), but I have long geld that vehicles are more efficient than mechs.
Yah, it’s a good thought for sure… there is so much different - I am not sure it would be even an apples2apples comparison. Plus there are so many mechs to do!

12:42 oi a mech with all TAGs and no guns could actually be kick arse , as long as you bring enough Semi Guided LRM and ArrowIV .......... The mech itself mightn't do any damage but you're going to have no friends if you take it 😂
Has a mech actually made a 10 ? Like I'm not really into changing anything in Battletech but I feel if something scored a 10 it probably should be nerfed , maybe .
If I'm not mistaken the Dire Wolf A was a 10. Don't quote me though.

I've never taken a mech with Lamellor armour before so I looked it up .......... Uuuummmmm ridiculous much ?
I feel this mech is about 500 BV undervalued ........ Like the only "disadvantages" I can see is you lose 2 points of armour per ton and it takes 12 slots . Pretty damn cheap for what it does like you're immune to LB X cluster rounds hell they can't even crit seek because they'll be reduced to 0 damage
