  • On this video we look at another set of vintage radios the party 4 transistor walkie talkies, this Iconic 1960s radio was very well made, Japanese components and manufacturing, these radios are a re badged version of the Weltklang WT-4061 radio which I have already reviewed but not tested.
Amazing just how well these radios still work.
My original video on the Weltklang radios here.

That's an incredible contact range from a 55 year old radio! Brilliant video. Thank you!

Yes and that's round noisy houses full of cheap unshielded stuff, I reckon maybe a mile over water.

Great video and those radios are brilliant for there age I remember when I was a kid I had a set of walkie talkies on the 49mhz band and they worked really well and just seeing your video reminded me of my childhood memories with walkie talkies and now that I'm an adult I use the amateur radio and I've also used the CB radio in the past so I've been on the radio for 19 years and it's all been great fun. Cheers Stephen M3SNV 73's.

Ok, Knoxieman... Your the MAN. Your thumnail got me hooked. My first set of Walkie Talkies were the Lafayette HA-70d model... my Grandad had the HA-70c 's. I was hooked at 7yr's old wayy back then to TX/RF... no wires attached? Whattt? I was already fascinated with any sort of radio "receivers". Electronics is where it's at!! Love your vids, keep it going & stay SAFE.

The '60's were a good decade - I was made in 65 funnily enough lol When I was a lad I would have killed for a set of those!

These walkie talkies work incredible good for what they are. Just 4 transistors, and such an amazing performance.
I know these "simple made" walkie talkies very good. There´s just one transistor used as actuall RF Stage (Receiver and transmitter). The other 3 transistors are just for the audio.
I haven´t yet had my hands on such old sets, but I tried a few new ones.
Just a few years ago to my suprise they sold similar (interms of technology) walkie talkies at the local grocery store. Sure, they were all with plastic, super short antenna and everything. The performance was as to be expected very bad. The modulation was kinda there, but they were so silent with the reception, that you had to hold them to your ear to understand what the other person is saying. Combine that with a very short range, and you basically can hear the other person talking rather over the air, than over the walkie talkie.
I opened them up and instead of the 3 transistors there was 1 transistor for the RF stuff and a LM386.
I got another set - much more expensive, which works on 40,68MHz. This is the "49MHz" version for Germany. Anyhow, these Sets were FM and they also worked very bad. I checked the signal with an external receiver, and the Frequency Modulation was Okay at least (Volume). When turned on they produced static like your radio, and I also expected some kind of simple circuit. The volume was also very low. Hold them to your ear, or you won´t understand what´s being said.
I had a look inside, and I was totally suprised what I found. There was a complex / IC based transceiver in them. I think they had a multi stage fm transmitter, Xtal based... and for the reception they used a superhet (!) concept with a prober NBFM demodulator chip... followed by a LM386 audio amplifier.
In theory these Sets could work very well, but if it was on purpose? ... They made them work so bad, that they are barely useable. Also the FM demodulator IC featured a squelch function, which they did not use.
The next set I got was kids 27MHz set aggain. This one kinda worked the best. It was a 4 or 5 Transistor set, and it was even loud enoug, that you can understand what the other person says... if you were quiet and listen to the speaker. Only problem this set had was that you had to talk really loud into the loudspeaker to archeive some AM depth...
Aggain, you could hear the other person rather talking over the air than over this set. What helped was increasing the antenna length by simple wrapping some tight wire (about a foot long) around the antenna and by that extend the antenna. In a test they made about 120 meter or yards, and then you actually could hear the other person talking "over the radio."
I got (along with a friend) a cheap walkie talkie kit from china on 49Mhz. I didn´t really expect much when buidling it, but ... actually this was the only one of "these" walkie talkies that actually worked well. Like your set, you can understand good what the other person says, and it just ... works great.
Just wanted to let you know that. These sets really work incredible well for what they are. It prooves that this "concept" can work... I just wonder why todays devices work so bad. Some of the units I´ve opened had a lot of parts in them, also the (probably the most expensive component) audio transformer was in them.
