    I would like to add that I have made a surprisingly good homemade Rosemary, Thyme, and camomile tea ice cream for a fancy restaurant and it was actually really great. If I recall the recipe did require olive oil.. just not such an ungodly amount lmao.

    • @EclipseXIV
      @EclipseXIV 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@Ilivepuppys they used fine table salt instead of fleur de sel (which is coarse sea salt similar in size to american koshering salt), which changes the taste and also makes the dish a lot more salty than it should be if used in exactly the same quantities. You can’t freely exchange those two types of salt in dishes unless you actually looked up measurements for how to properly substitute one for the other (I know this from experience years ago lol).
      They also used cheap expired olive oil in way higher quantities instead of a drizzle of the more expensive fruity oils used in tiktok recipes. Fresh high quality olive oils taste completely different than anything you can buy for a buck at the grocery store. Whether or not you want them on ice cream is a matter of preference, but it‘s not going to be disgusting because the taste is way different than just any old cooking oil. That‘s why there are so many different types of olive oils specifically made for so many different uses.
      If you mess up both your ingredients AND how to use them you can‘t expect the outcome to be the same. And you also can‘t say you followed everything to a t and it magically turned out bad, because that’s just not true.

    As someone who works with olive oil a lot: olive oil with ice cream CAN work really well together, but not the way they are trying it.
    There are some important things to keep in mind.
    The quality of the olive oil is really important. You need proper extra virgin olive oil. The ones at the supermarket are usually really bad, so go to a proper store that specialises in olive oil.
    The second thing to keep in mind is the ratio oil to ice cream. Just a little drizzle of oil is enough. I can't emphasise this enough otherwise it won't taste good.

    • @MontySlython
      @MontySlython 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      tf is a store that specializes in olive oil?? I'd say I have pretty damn good olive oil myself and still think this would taste awful even without waterboarding the ice cream like he did, on top of that there's literally no point to adding more fat to one of the fattiest treats.

    • @maxqj1
      @maxqj1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @MontySlython Good question! I think it's a little different per country, but where I'm from there are multiple stores that sell a large variety of olive oils from different countries that vary in flavour and intensity. I think the best comparison I can give is like a store that specialises in wine. The staff there should be able to guide you through what olive oil works for you (it's always a good sign if you're allowed to taste).
      Source: me. I work at one of those stores. It's why I love talking about olive oil :)
      As for waterboarding comment (absolutely love the wording btw): olive oil on ice cream isn't for everyone. Some people love it and some people hate it and that's perfectly valid. Just try to be open to it :)
      As for the fat on fat: the way I see it, you're already being unhealthy by eating ice cream. Might as well go for it. It's definitely not an everyday treat tho.

    I will defend that olive oil and vanilla ice cream do work. What they think is a "normal" olive oil taste is just anything thats not extra virgin and from a legit producer. I havent tried with just standard extra virgin olive oil, but I went to a local olive producer in Spain, and they had a tasting where one of the combinations was vanilla with olive oil made from olives steeped in a barrel with orange peels.
    The result was that the olive oil tasted nothing like olives but of oranges, and it went REALLY well with vanilla ice cream. It really opened my eyes about olive oil. One important note the owner said was that properly made EXTRA VIRGIN olive oil won't taste like oil. Charlie's olive oil was probably so bitter.

    Dude, there's a place selling savory ice cream around Anaheim Disneyland Resorts. It's "Salt and Straw' store I believe. There were whacky flavors like Mac n' Cheese, Arbequina Olive Oil, curry, pear and blue cheese, chocolate potato salad, cinnamon fried chicken, caramelized turkey & cranberry sauce, etc. They change flavors every month though, but it was good actually. They are not using the real meat or anything, just using spiced chips or brittles, spices, herbs and syrup. i think they also use bacon bits? But it wasn't that crazy, or I am just crazy. You should try them.
