How It Took A YEAR To Reinvent This Sonic Game

- It took me practically a whole year to completely change the state of this sonic game, Sonic Momentum. It's time I finally update you guys and address what has been going on with this fangame. I will also be going to unveiling some of the new hidden techniques I've been using to render things through the GPU. Consider it a kind of devlog that has been long overdue I guess.

Thank you everyone for the support. But as an aside, I want to clarify any misinterpretations about aspects surrounding AI.
Please understand that AI was NOT used to create direct visuals. I don’t know where this rumor of ‘the game is created by AI’ coming from when I already made myself clear with how I used it. AI was used to help me understand shader language in order to carry out my OWN vision and methods. Ai ASSISTED with how I could code a process as my dilemmas were very nuanced. I already made a video talking about AI being used as a tool to learn NOT a replacement. You need previous knowledge, skill , and ideas to be able to utilize it in this way. Hope this helps and If you have any questions feel free to ask! Don’t just assume.

Keep fighting the good fight, AI is a tool that can be used and misused like any other.

As a game developer myself Bane, you are a huge inspiration to me. The way you elegantly balance you game dev career with doing TH-cam simultaneously. It's insanely impressive, and the losers that ridicule online over petty nonsense will never know how much hard work you put into your craft. I hope to have a great rest of the year. And I look forward to this project in 2024.
I'm surprised at how well you can handle aggressive criticism especially since its coming from twitter, but I respect you for even going out of your way to confront this and still try to improve despite what most people would see as just someone being rude instead of criticism. Always looking forward to the sonic momentum updates and changes keep it up Mr. Bane :)
Never doubted you. Been following forever and you’ve always seemed to know what you’re doing. I kinda figured it was an overhaul of some sort.
AYO THAT HUNI CHARACTER DESIGN IS FIRE! I'd be so down to play a full game with her as the main character
She's also been planned to play like Sonic Rush with all the tricks and whatnot.
The combat is the best part imo. Sonic spin dashing, homing attack chains and instashield reving are fun as was the Tails boomerang movekit. Still keeping an eye on Knuckles (I guess a Pizza Tower styled combat would work?) as I never really noticed him aside from using the drill move for level shortcuts
I think adding variable Runnable walls with Arid Terrain to dig and catch objects and rings while maintaining its Momentum and pacing would be very useful for fast traveling through Zones and making a better approach to Learn all Knuckles Abilities

all im gonna wish is that you utilise that huni design in the story somehow. its too good to be left into the dust.
I noticed the change, but with the aesthetics of the new cyberspace and all the shader trails, blur, distortions effects and background it still looked pretty good to me
Twitter is always makin up the dumbest excuses for using AI in ur Game, especially I don't see the point of it. Why would you be complaining about somebody using AI for their Game even tho there are literally no disadvantages for the experience of playing the game. I mean you clearly stated multiple times that you only used it to help the project and for the most part yourself to learn and understand how ceirtan things work in dev. I'm still looking forward towards the future of youre Project and I hope that you make the best of it because now it looks very promising.💙
The reason people are against using AI is because AI is built to use pre-existing content to generate "new" content whose source material often goes uncredited. As such, using AI to make something for you is not much better than plagiarism.
@@FilmBucket But what is difference using AI to take youre sources instead of like looking it up to make things complicated, also when somebody learns these things from some other people do you really thing they will get credit for teaching?

I hope to see more transparent videos like this. Helps dispel some very awkward discussion about the game and it's just nice knowing behind the scenes. The shader technique is really smart and the piecemeal development makes more sense for receiving feedback.
Only thing I didn't like was how someone's bad takes were handled. At the very least hide their identity since putting them on blast on bird site is different than a video which will last longer. Especially since these go as far back as June and they're the only examples brought up. Not really much "drama" if someone just doesn't know what they're talking about. Ends up feeling more out of spite which is more attention than they deserve. Speaking from experience, that kind of thing will eventually drain you and bite you in the ass.

Pretty cool. I like what I'm seeing with this fangame. So you're still using Game Maker Studio with this, right? Or did you use a different engine now? What are you using for the 3D texture to help you with the level building? It's impressive. I still like making my own personal tilesets if I can. Gives it a personal touch, you know?

The one thing that strikes me is both the background and platforms being way too bright in that one stage.
Can you do a tutorial on your game or like a playthrough. I want to see what the game is supposed to be played

I had a idea i never shared out or talked about it, i wanted to see some games have spin-dashes that create sparks or are use for a variety of combat just like ssbu (Super smash bros ultimate series.). Spin dashes have became useless sometimes

No sé si es porque lo probé en un pc mas viejo, un Core 2 Duo que uso para el trabajo. Ahora mas tarde lo jugaré en la que uso para hacer los vídeos que es una i5 de cuatro núcleos. ¡Saludos!
When will you release the complete fangame? I see that you add and add to it and there is already a lot and nothing that you release something, a new demo or something

The auto texture doesn't feel right. It is like if green hill texture was only the brown/dirt checkboard pattern. You are missing the grass and other details.
The bevel effect, with shadows on the bottom and the outline to contrast it better against the background is useful, but i feel it is not enough for that 2d sonic style people are used to.
Maybe something like 9-slice or blob tilesets (but with the shader help so it can work on non 90deg angles)
Ignore them they only want attention,drama and clout don't give these people your time and I'm definitely looking forward to this new demo of sonic momentum

Even though this is the first time i'm hearing of it, as a budding gamedev myself this all has provided plenty of insight for me. While I may be using Godot instead of Game Maker 1, it's still invaluable to know how to approach developing games. Everything flowed very well in the video; and while it may not be too technical, i'm curious about further updates on Sonic Momentum. If there's ever the potential for a gamedev playlist detailing your experiences on building a Sonic fangame, i'd be all for watching and taking notes.
There's a lot out there that I need to learn, anyways.

@@CassiusStelar Really? if that's so well, that's sad, since it was such a cute beginners tool for many people and then they drop it like it was nothing, even if it wasn't as optimal it still what lead many people to learn and stay focused on programing language and coding and indie videogame development.
Actually now that i think of it, what about moving it to GODOT Game Engine?, it will allow him to import its projects to C++ for many devices to just run games without optimization problems, and it's totally free to use and download, sure unless you want to support the developers who created that wholesome engine and it's wonderful growing community with a tip, which is totally fine.
I think this game needs a tile engine.

You should have be more clear about this test phase before, i though it was just a permanent change and though this game just lost his own magic due to the critic on the 1st release
From my pov i was seeing and update that lost the precious art style and the playable characters...
So thag made me lost interest, addint more levels thag looked the same, and when playing force me to play hyper good to get double S rank to move to the next was not so good for me so i uninstalled quickly and just move on,
But if you now learn, want to make the game better and have already a solid plan on how to do it then well i've be waiting for the next release and play it and look how much evolved, just try to give a good impression and be as pasionate about the game as you can
And dont get me wrong cyberspace look, is great, i really like cyberspace amd remember me to those advance levels like cybertrack,
But i tough it was weird and bad to get rid of phantasmal forest even when the level was already done, and the emerald coast one too, it was like, okay do a new cyberspace stage or 4 of them equal for test level design,
But why you took the same level design you have for phantasmal forest and just clear everything to put the generic and unoriginal taken from frontiers cyberspace background?
Just let things be varied and make me got hype when every level blast aesthetic you can do (even if you have to take more time for that, you have a great taste on how to make things look pretty, and i think thats the strongest point in Sonic momentum, you should let that being intact as you can, and be clear with what frameworks are just a test for you and dont represent what you want for the final game at all
In any case keep trying i think what sonic momentum need more is to have their visual and graphical identity to be recognized and focuses too on their level design, you have a really different style of gameplay and typic sonic stage cant work as well as always, so you shoul try to stop taking original levels layouts to test and make a level and keep improving into that with a strong feedback help, make a new itiretation of the path design of classic sonic but involving combat and speedruning idk but i think you get me...
This game needs this identity to bright and be that big one it can be in the fan comunity

I don't know if there's a clear solution besides the one you proposed (a really neat one of yours honestly) but Something like a Filters option to change the game's look of choice and overall appearance manually or depending of many values that change it's intentional base look would be cool. Just to better the visuals while retaining it's visual direction with only one focused style. (It's just a suggestion of mine, so take it with a grain of salt)

It's not a model, it's a sprite and it's not Sonic's size, it's the camera distance
@@etherealhatred he refuses to change his camera distance, so I would at least hope he makes the sprite at least a little bigger to compensate
Or just simply add a camera option to zoom in and out manually (with a buttons schemes probably) in any angle where Sonic or any other character would still be visible in the game screen, at the same time allowing more actions like taunts/posing where it executes a camera close-up showing up a displayed animated taunts/poses.
