This is actually my favorite episode of the show. I love the "slasher" feel, and even though the plot is fairly simple it touches on so many aspects of the show and characters, especially the relationship between Buffy and Giles. "You have a father's love for the child" ALWAYS kills me.

Helpless was a very good episode exploring trust and betrayal. Many were so angry watching this at the time that Giles could do such a thing. You can see the anger Buffy has towards both Giles and The Council, and yes The Council are highly irritating. This episode reminds us of course that Buffy is indeed human, and all the weaknesses and fears that go along with that. Even though she passes her test, we still feel cheated for her you can see Giles hates doing it too, and has nothing but contempt for Quentin Travers. This episode actually was a watershed for Buffy as she was now truly leaving her adolescence behind and becoming an adult. A very touching scene at the end when Giles tends to Buffy's wounds. A very good but disturbing episode.

In my opinion, this is the most important episode in the Buffy-Giles relationship. This is where he chooses her side over the council. It was suspicious that Giles only heard of that rite of passage that day, being a watcher there's no reason why he wouldn't know about that if it was a real thing. And they did that on her birthday, that's petty. She's getting too old and opiniated for them and they're tryna test if there'll be a new line through her? Why risk losing the extra slayer you got because you want a younger puppet? The council doesn't like Giles, Buffy and Faith. Faith is so suspicious of everyone, they could never do this to her at this moment. So they got to Buffy through Giles. Giles at first thought it was a real test, but realized that there was no chance she'd make it alive it was a trap by the council. I think they never really trusted him because of his past.

For me, one of the genuinely scary episodes and consequently one of my favorites.

"Oh yeah, we're getting a birthday?" George asks so nonchalantly. 😆Sir, that's never a good thing for Buffy. The popular theory is that this whole "test" was designed that slayers wouldn't survive it. That way the slayers tended to be young, inexperienced, and more easy to control for the Counsel. Hate the Counsel with a fiery passion. They use the Slayer like a weapon, nothing more. Heck, she doesn't even get paid! That scene where Giles goes into the house and finds the dead Watcher and gets so shaken--it must have been pretty bad. It's not like he hasn't been around gory stuff prior. 😬

Like Kendra said, it's not a job, it's who you are. Buffy never contracted herself out for a job. The watchers actually work for the slayers as well. They provide all the teaching and research with the ancient texts and prophesies. Plus the training and general guidance. But the reason why they might want only young slayers is more likely because a girl will grow up and start a family or a full-time job meaning she won't be spending time on the slayer patrol. Might even quit it entirely. That's what they're afraid of.

Another excellent reaction. A few things to remember and keep in mind. If Buffy is having a birthday, nothing good is going to happen for her. This was not as bad as last year when Angel became Angelus but this was bad. This episode also calls back to when Buffy was without her power in Halloween in Season 2. When was saw this when it aired we were shocked. The test is ridiculous and made no sense to any of us. A few days later one of my girl friends that watched had the idea that the Council wanted Buffy to die . She said the test was only going to result in a Slayer to die and the only reason Buffy won is that she was warned by Giles and came prepared with Holy Water. We all started talking about this and then we decided that Slayers were all young immature girls and that they could be controlled. Buffy is becoming Independent and with Faith more volatile she could be an easier Slayer to handle. If any non powerful teen girl went into a locked house with an insane Vampire starved for blood, they would die quickly. It was that week we started to realize the show was about more than Vampires and about life, independent thought, and that Buffy had hidden enemies out to get her. This episode really shook us. First Giles( at least he changed and helped Buffy), then Giles getting fired, and her real Father rejecting Buffy for “reports”. This was anguish and every girl I knew felt so sorry for Buffy.

George acting like he wasn't turned on by those scenes of Kralik being gross and overtly sexual. XD

This is a brilliant episode, SMG and Head were extraordinary, and Kralik was genuinely monstrous...but I really question the narrative and Lore choice to make The Council so reckless with a Slayer's life. The prevailing fan theory is that the Council deliberately murders the Slayer to keep her young and pliable to the will of the Patriarchy.
    I'm unpersuaded by this.
First of all, the casualty rate for Slayers is horrendous. Across the show, Buffy became The Slayer-meaning the Slayer previous to her was killed. Buffy was killed. Kendra was killed. Without Buffy's aid Faith likely would have been killed by Taquitos.
That's four Slayers in a little over two years.
Battle experience is crucial, and every fight she survives makes her exponentially more effective.
Buffy has already prevented four Apocalyptic events: The Harvest, the rise of the Master, the Judge and Acathla, and killed scores of lesser vamps and demons.
Finally...in what way has the Council tried to micromanage a Slayer that we've seen? Buffy does what she pleases. Faith even more so.
I'd say indifference is a bigger problem. They didn't tell either Giles or Zabuto about each other's Slayer, or Giles about Faith, or warn him about Gwendolyn Post, and they've let Faith, a traumatized juvenile fend for herself as a street criminal.

I agree with this. They're useless bureaucrats who don't like people questioning their orders or doing things their own way. And they probably believe that it's not safe to have two slayers with all that power running around, they treat them like they're their property. Instead of being happy they got two, they came in to traumatize Buffy even more, the girl already died. I also think that they have probably been told or believe that to keep the universe in balance there should only be one or they're tryna test if the line also goes through her. The fact that Giles is a watcher and never heard of this rite is suspicious.

For my money the scariest Buffy episode (even scarier than a certain famous season 4 episode). You truly fear for her life here. The episode also reduces me to tears more than one time.

Buffys ' Horror ' episode love the creepy villain (am fairly certain this is the first reaction that ive seen mentioning how ' hot ' he was though lol ) the music score is fantastic and the end scene between Giles and Buffy gets me every time especially after her father couldnt be bothered to turn up for her 18th some excellent parenting there by Mr Summers ...

My only issue with this episode is they never really address in the future, buffy seems to trust him immediately again, there are no lasting consequences of Giles betrayal
