ℹ️ About the Episode: Getting ready to hit the road is fun-at least, for us. We enjoy the process of deciding what to bring and what to leave behind based on our route and planned activities. It seems that we bring fewer things each year. Like anything, simplicity is appreciated more with experience.
We also enjoy being forced to "reset" our lives by turning our home into a vacation rental AKA the KYD Cabin. It's so much work, but by the time we're finished each year, we're grateful that we were forced to make tough decisions about what stays in the cabin, what goes into the shed, and what goes to Goodwill. That process would not happen without this lifestyle. We have a big route planned for this year! We'll cross the country at least twice. First, we'll head east with the new Airstream and spend a bit of time in Florida when Caleb gets out of school. Then it's back to the west for more family events, plus some epic adventures along the coast.

You guys really should consider a ramp for Charlie. I would bet $$ that he doesn't like jumping all the way in and out - hard on the joints. We got our big dog a ramp for each high vehicle years ago, and it's so much better for her! ❤

    • @teresas683

And a bigger bed for him while driving - he doesn’t seem to be able to get comfortable in the back seat on long drives. Maybe he likes sitting up, don’t know.

watching Charlie hesitate on jumping into the back seat was kinda spooky. he's a bigger dog and not young. my girl blew out her right rear knee and it broke my heart let alone it was a surgery that cost almost 3k. it might be a good time to think about some steps for him to get into the truck. make it as easy as you can.

Did you see his nose when he looked down, lol The dog is a character too. To think I was going to miss Kaleb, 🤣. Great shake down. We are taking off in July; Oak Harbor, WA to Cleveland, Clarksburg, WVa and then maybe Bolivia, NC. Gotta visit fam and friends. Not sure about making hard reservations because we want to be flexible on our drive times based so we can stay longer in a nice area or just sleep in lol. We have a dog too, George eats at 0600 each day. Reminds us around 0525 that it is almost time for breakfast.

To help with keeping food in the fridge even after you fix the door, I installed spring tension rods across each shelf. Two on larger shelf. That way even if the door opens, it will keep things on the shelf. They are like $10 on Amazon. 12-28”.

Last Summer I towed 3000lb camper to the tip top of Beech Mtn. N.C. My rear wheel drive truck , on the paved road, was handling trailer weight and grade fine as far as power went. But when I got to our friends gravel driveway, same steep grade, I had no traction. I vexed for two days while we stayed with them about how I would get out of there. Dropped the WD bars and watched the back end of the pickup sink. It worked and I came away with a better understanding of what those bars did and realized that on the way up, even on the paved roads, I had been losing traction.

What memories you've stirred up. We've travelled I-40 so many times from Monterey Bay, CA going home to TX & family. Sometimes we dropped S at Santa Rosa, NM to head to Clovis & TX. Other times we'd go on to Amarillo for a family visit & then head S on I-27 thru Lubbock & on to DFW/Austin/Houston/San Antonio. What a trip. & to top it off we used to live in metro OKC. Know the OK portion of I-40 too + have made a few trips via 40 to the E Coast & up to New England. So am loving your travels as we no longer can RV while hubby's fighting stage 4 cancer & was just placed on dialysis. So thank you beyond words for sharing your wonderful adventures as you begin a new season.❤

Mark: we have a 30’ classic. Two help ideas that work well. The fridge did the same thing as yours. If you push up on the door (as you know), it locks in perfectly. I talked to the dealer in FL about it and they weren’t exactly good about it, but simply said to lift up and listen for the lock. It works.
Hitch: I keep a little pressure on the hitch release lever and lift up the truck and trailer until it releases (opens up). Then I can lower about an inch which allows the truck to rock a little (in park, not emergency brake), and it releases.
Lastly: your sway bars are putting too much tension in transferring the weight to the front of the truck. Is the trailer receiver 4:56 ball 19 1/2 inches from the ground? The owners manual will tell you the actual height it should be in the trailer side. Finally, I bought the weigh safe hitch which gives an actual tongue weight every time. Their app on your phone has a calculation as to how much weight you dial in for transfer. It’s perfect. I noticed you had everything in the front of the trailer when you left AZ. That probably added too much weight on your tongue weight and ergo, the battery cover issue.
    Hope this has been helpful.

I was just out there a week ago bringing my new to me RV home from Phoenix. And yes there are a lot of trains 😊. I didn’t get to really enjoy much because I had to get home to Maine in 10 days because of my transit tags. Enjoy your ride.

Makes us want to travel! Safe travels. Was in Arizona in March with the snow. Came home to MN and snow. This weekend to be around 60 degrees. Hopefully, our campground will open in a few weeks and possibly travel in June. Going to spend May to June at the campground to spend time fishing and family time with the family ( son, daughter in law and three grandchildren with youngest going to be about 2 months old). We got 2-4 years before retirement. Hopefully be in Seligman AZ Jan- April.

We had a similar Fridge door problem. We solved it by installing a "Child proof plastic latch" Un locks easily and re connects just as easy

We use 2” black “gaffer” tape when traveling. We started using it in Alaska last summer as a precaution. The tape is strong and leaves no residue!

To fasten fridge door I would put command hook on fridge door and on wall next to fridge and use a bungy.

I don't own a travel trailer, but I have owned a boat in the Seattle area for nearly 20 years. I don't winterize my sailboat, since I like to go sailing in the winter. While I get plenty of snow and ice on deck, my solution is a couple of oil filled heaters turned down low and a dehumidifier. I wouldn't run a diesel heater unattended for so long, but the electric heaters are great.

I put the shutoff valve at the faucet so I could control it easier, same fittings both ends. I hope you have a great season.

I've learned that you should always carry a couple of command strip hooks. anything that won't stay open you can put the command strips on and wrap some para cord around them while you travel too keep things closed. Nice thing is they come off with no damage when you finally fix it. you just put them away and have some refill strips for the next time.

On our travel days we place refrigerator tension bars in the refrigerator to keep the items in place so when you open the door they don't spill out and of course it keep them from opening the door during travel. Their like $15 online.

Hello again , I almost forgot about your " fridge door dilemma " . I have a Magic Chef 10.1 cubic foot. Had the same problem, watched an RV tech video on TH-cam and the guy used a screen door jamb bracket. Its ingenious because it fits perfectly betwixt the upper & lower doors. Then you use a metal / vinyl pin to pop into the hole of the face of the jamb where the original pin would go. Works seamlessly. I'm sorry , I don't have the link. But search it on TH-cam. Good luck .

Good morning from Northern Nevada, for now. We just joined the community, and soon we'll hit the road for good with a '24 F350 dually and Cirrus 920 camper, also '24. We're putting out house up for sale to pay for all of this, and not looking back.
Thank you Marc for the video on the Superduty you posted. This being out first truck, it was very helpful. We'll have a lot to learn and share.
    Cheers.
    Allan and Kelly.

Ok Marc, now I don't feel so bad! I got rid of my torsion bars on our 29ft trailer because I thought maybe we did not need them. So far ,So Good. Maybe because we are towing with a 3/4 ton 4dr truck, the tail dosen't ''wag the dog''! We don't miss the bars at all, and I feel better about much less strain on the trailer frame! Glad to see it worked for you!

ProTip on the coupler on that Airstream. Flip the black release handle down BEFORE dropping it on the ball of the truck. You will see it rise, then positively “snap” into place when it locks. If it does not snap back down, put the truck in gear and give it a quick “forward tug” and it will click. I’ve had that typed of coupler on my Featherlite race car trailer for more than a decade and like how easy it is.
