ℹ️ About the Episode: Truck and RV maintenance are a big part of RV life. You’ve heard us say before that there are no perfect RVs-well, there are no perfect trucks either. We’ve had exceptional luck with our Super Dutys over the years, but they have two major drawbacks: the death wobble and the CP4 high-pressure fuel pump. If you’re unfamiliar with the Bosch CP4 issue, the short version is that this pump was made in Europe, which has different diesel than in the States. Over the years, as the US has gotten stricter on environmental regulations, our diesel has been stripped of many of the lubricants that make the CP4 pump work properly. If or when it fails, the metal shrapnel is sent through the fuel system, creating an issue that can cost up to 15k to repair. 😱 GM and Dodge moved away from the CP4 pump years ago, making Super Duty truck owners even more frustrated. So what’s a Ford owner to do? There are three steps to take, depending on your budget and how long you plan on keeping the truck. The first and best practice for any diesel owner is to use a diesel fuel additive. ARod with Powerstroke Tech Talk recommends this additive, which we’ve added to our Amazon store in the category “For your truck.” Link above. The other solutions are included in this video.

Don't listen to the haters, keep making the videos you want to make. The detractors can watch, or not. Here's a secret for them, sometimes I don't finish a video if it doesn't interest me and I don't get mad about it! Amazing.
I've never seen a bad KYD video yet!
Good to see PowerStroke Tech talk with Arod getting some TH-cam cred. I first discovered him back in 2018 when my 2012 6.7 started having DPF issues. He walked me through a few tips on what my problem might be. Enjoy his content
Rod is a very skilled technician ,as a retired diesel tech you can clearly see how familiar he is with the Powerstroke .Good choice Mark and Trish cooking him.
😎
Choosing him.
We love having ARod at our shop in Florida. He is very knowledgeable and professional.
Aaron may be the most genuine power stroke mechanic out there. This is a great collaboration, and he is an amazing mechanic.
ppppreciate chu
I 100% agree!
OMG I watch both of y’all’s channels!!!
Need to upgrade my fuel pump!
I love how A-rod is not cocky. You can tell he is confident and really has a passion for his career.
Love the Super Duty videos! People who don’t want this content can always watch your older videos :) as a loooong time RVer, this is just about the only RV channel I still watch because y’all are still sharing what you’re learning now after all your years too.
P.S. - if this is the content YOU want to make, please keep at it.
P.S.S. - Turbo whistles!!! 🎉
Great mechanics like that are hard to come by. It is so nice to see a guy getting a ha..(woops, family channel).....getting excited over a new air intake system. Certainly costs some cash, but far less than a CP4 repair would be, so I think a superb mod for anyone keeping their truck a long time. Good stuff, and as always, safe travels....
You have the best power stroke technician on the planet working on your truck, this man has more passion for these trucks! ARod is the best. I will be making the trip to him at some point.
Love Arod he worked on mine. One of the best Ford techs around. You guys will be happy. Love the channel
Aye mister gasser lol
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod I know I got gas 😆
We own a 2018 F250 diesel with 46,000 miles on it. I had never heard of the CP4 issue before this video. Added it to the list of things to have done to the truck based on your recommendations. Your videos have been a revelation. They are informative and very helpful. Thank you and safe travels!
I love that you make these every-now-and-then upgrade/module update videos. It really helps people learn better for their set up(s), just as you said!
Congrats. Same combination by Arod. I love the throaty sound of the pusher intake and the DCR is now Carb compliant. Great video for both channels!!
Aye fester, my mannn
Happy Sunday everyone
this is the crossover episode i wasn't expecting but very much enjoyed. cheers!
As diesel tech myself, we recommend the same pump and have installed tons of them. Love the kit and is a great way to keep the truck going for many miles.
I love and really enjoy diving into the nuts n bolts of the workings of what keeps us safe and moving down the road!!! Thanks Mark, More input, input, input... These things don't just run forever the upkeep is so important!!! To those who don't like it??? Keep hoping your mechanical stuff don't break... and then buy a lottery ticket. odds are about the same
We have an excellent playlist dedicated to taking care of these Superdutys
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod Will enjoy watching that for sure....
4.5 million miles over 40+ years living in a 7x8 foot bouncing, rolling, vibrating box on the concrete seas... I've lived the evolution of our diesel engines from an old 238 driptroit to the DD 15 litre... and all of the disasters the government has done to the industry just to turn over the tax dollar... The new ones are designed to fail..... fast, faster and fastest!!
We just sold our Promaster which we ran trouble-free for 7 years. The only reason for the “trouble-free” was because I was aware of all the known issues from the forums and took care of the issues BEFORE they became trouble for me.
ARod provides a wealth of 6.7 info and first class tech! Did the S&S DCR upgrade to my 2018 F250 myself with the help of watching the video of ARod’s install. Nice to have the peace of mind knowing the CP4 is gone.
Thanks for the tip and the video I’m gonna have to wait for about 50,000 more miles or three years that’s the end of my warranty on my 2019 F250 diesel I only got 35,000 on mine. I am going to start doing the additive. Thank you very much for the tip. Be safe be well.
If you have the warranty, why waste the money on additive?
Shameful that you even have to do this when GM stopped using this junk fuel pump in 2016. You would think Ford would do a recall and replace these for free, yet they're still using this junk in brand new Super Duty trucks.
A-rod! Thank you for the link to the Flying Wrench! Happens to be just down the road! Great place!!
I don’t even have a super duty but I still enjoyed this video.
Great investment in truck preservation!
My CP3 scattered in my 2011 Chevy Duramax 6.6 with only 110k miles on it a couple of years ago! Was towing my 5th wheel hauler through heavy traffic when it failed without any warning. The entire fuel system, including tank was contaminated with metal filings. A nightmare to deal with. I had never heard of the issue and was lucky to find a Duramax guru about 50 miles from home. Replacing the CP3/4 is the only real solution if you intend on keeping your truck. Happy for your upgrade, you won’t regret it. Happy trails friends!
Your 2011 Duramax LML did not come with a Bosch CP3. It had a Bosch CP4 and that is what failed. The CP3's do not fail like the CP4's they are completely different designs. A 2011 to 2016 Duramax can however be retrofitted with a CP3 which will solve the CP4 issue. You cannot put a CP3 on a 6.7 Ford, it won't fit. In 2017 Duramax went to a Denso HP4 high pressure fuel pump because of CP4 failures like you experienced. Ford continues to use a CP4 and could care less.
@@jimm2442 My mistake, my Duramax DID have a CP4. Thanks for the clarification.
Just watched this and Arod's video back to back. Couple of great characters in the same shop. 👍
I have no idea of any of this and I won't use it either but I enjoy watching you guys. Greetings from Mexico City.
Thank you for a very interesting video! I don’t have a Super Duty but it was informative. I really liked it! Safe travels ❤
Might also ask about replacing the plastic fuel line and filter housing, those can catch fire, I believe a company makes a simple metal line replacement with metal filter set up. I saw another channel do this
Arid is a straight forward no BS guy. I like the way he just tells you what is what.
I have 6.7powerstroke in my Thor Super C, getting the CP4 fail indicators only after 25k miles on this motor. I seen Arod perform this pump change on your truck on his channel, then seen it on yours. Thanks, wish I had known about this disaster before it hit me. Yes its $12K ! but Ima save some of that and DIY.
Same truck and I switched from the hot shots stuff to that archoil and noticed the truck seems happier.
I love the video! I replaced the vp44 on my beloved 2001 gen 2 2500 Cummins which are infamously bad. FASS fuel system, SnB air intake Banks air arm and exhaust, bigger/upgraded turbo and heading down the road the power is noticeable, the turbo whirring/whistling just means it’s purring because of all of the nice air it’s getting!!
We love the channel and totally get where your coming from and really enjoy the video's on maintenance. I would like to say and it may have already been said in the comments that I have owned 2 2013 LML Duramax chevys that use the exact same CP4 fuel pump. I think Chevy used them from 12-17 or somewhere close to that. Both of my Dmax trucks went over 200k and the one I have now has 214k and it's bone stock and has hade zero failures except for emissions systems, Def tanks, and the sort. It's a very low percentage of failures with a properly maintained Truck. A guy told me change the oil every 5k and fuel filters every 10k and I live by it and have great success. Just trying to give balance to the force;)
Thanks for creating this very informative video! We learned a lot! ❤
I so want to have AROD do this to my truck, along with a bigger fuel tank!
I know that over time content evolves, but I have watched 5 videos in the past 8 months. I really miss the videos like the outing to Biltmore or even a hiking video. I have enjoyed following your journey since season two. Continued success to you all in the future.
I agree. I've followed the Leach family since season 1 but all these install and repair videos are bumming me out.
There was more technical content in the earlier seasons. By the time fall comes, we'll get comments that this channel is nothing but travel now and they liked it better when they learned something. Never ending loop.
@@KeepYourDaydream Loved it and don't even own a super duty
Amazing how refined gasoline engines are these days, huh?
I'm ready for these "upgrade" videos to be done. We prefer seeing the awesome places you visit, & we miss Caleb & love seeing Charlie!
We just bought an extended Ford warranty for our 2019 F350 6.7 truck. It only has 68,000 miles on it, and we’ve had no issues yet. So with the extended warranty, we have coverage through 120,000 miles.
Did he suggest Ford wouldn’t do the fix under warranty?
There are a couple of fuel control valves that will be checked for rust and if it is present the warranty will not cover it.
That's good because the CP4s usually implode around 100K miles. Good luck.
You better make sure your warranty covers fuel issues!! My Ford dealer told me my warranty does not cover fuel issues of any sort??!!! They wanted $18,0000 for cp4 failure!!!
@@scottmichaels12 71000 here
Pricey labor there, but I've been a fan of PTT for quite a while and I think it's awesome that a guy can charge a premium price for premium work. Just passed 126k miles in our 2019 F350 and that CP4 has been on my mind for a while.
Have you noticed any increase in mileage using the additive? thank you and great info!
I run the AR6500 in my 13 6.7. Amazing stuff.
Just some food for thought...The best thing to do for any diesel engine especially the Powerstroke, Duramax and Cummins diesels is to replace the pistons with SPEED OF AIR modified pistons... That way you can eliminate any regen cycles or having to use the DPF and SCR, PERIOD! The speed of air pistons also reduce EGTs and combustion temperatures which helps to eliminate the need of the EGR. These pistons will also increase horsepower, but more so torque... On average around 200 plus more ft-lbs... And that's with everything else being stock on the engine... The coup de gras on top of that would be to install the Banks Engineering Power Pack (monster ram intake, Derringer tuner, pedal monster and I-dash monitor).
Looking to get a F250 diesel. This is very helpful. Thanks.
I like ALL types of videos. I don’t RV and I don’t have a Super Duty. Still very interesting.
I really can't wait until I meet y'all out there on the road 🛣️
Did you guys notice any difference in throttle response? And any difference in MPG?
Great video! I love your approach to these topics.
I only have 424,000 on my 7.3. Guess I should start worrying soon!
Thank you for the video Mark. A few things, Trish didn’t hear the whistle. Second, I didn’t get your impression of the updates. What did you notice with the upgrades? Were their performance boost, better fuel economy…? Thanks guys!
I have a lot of time for Aaron, he's a nice guy and has a great channel, one of the first I ever subbed too.
🙏🙏
Congrats on your first "intake". They make more noise. Its Cool!
Just sayin I like all of your content keep doing what you do😊
Hello, question, how much does it cost to replace the diesel pump? Thanks for the video.
@11:12 Mark said what we was all thinking !!!!
I have to disagree with the folks who don't like this content. This is absolutely RV and travel related. These upgrades aren't just flashy performance mods. Mods like this will make your truck more reliable when you're towing big travel trailers. By the way, I would suggest you permanently remove the hood so you can show off the intake. That bronze looks amazing!
Lol. Yes, now I'm going to need to remember to clean under the hood too when I wash the truck.
Wondering.... why the AR6500 vs. Stanadyne or Hot Shot? Does Archoil have any alcohol in it? I'm doing this... you guys have me sold on using a diesel additive.
But, how has you fuel millage been after 1700 miles with the additive he recommended?
You didn't state if you saw any improvement from installing the Pusher. You only mentioned that you hear the turbo whistle and that it looks good. Is it worth the money? I had the S&S Disaster Kit installed on my 2018 about 5K miles ago. I like the peace of mind it has given me.
Thanks
Just traded in my 15 duramax w bosch fuel pump w 100k miles of working great, relieved it didn’t fail while I owned. Our diesel lacks the oil they have in Europe, hence the high failure rate of these European pumps designed for their diesel
Same reasons GM went to Asin pumps? Hate to ask msrp 😮 The pipe color is sweet
Mark, thanks for talking about this mod on our SD 2017+. Question; have you experienced any problems with the sunroof in your SD? On my 2017, I’ve had to replace the cables and sliders twice. And that is with keeping the rubber seal clean and lubricated each time I wash the truck. Thanks!!
I wish I could drag my 2003 ambo with the 7.3 to him and get this fuel system worked out at Arod's
How do we get in touch with him so I could get this done as well?
i keep telling yall every year u travel on the badger im in manitowoc yall need to film more here we have greAT ADVENTURES
Noticed that you guys kept the plastic fuel filter housing that seams to go bad and start fires under the hod just saying
Great video!!!
Why not do an EGR delete at the same time?
Arod is Amazing!
Trish do you travel with your spices in the spice rack? We have the same set up in our 2022 Flying Cloud 28 ft Airstream. The spices do not stay in place for us. There was always a mess waiting for us after traveling. So now I store the spices in a cabinet on travel days. None of our ideas worked well. Any suggestions?
FYI, the bicycle on the driver's side looks like looks like it is not secure, for a fork mount?
Apologies if already asked and answered, but what was the total install time?
I didn’t realize pusher made emissions intact setups.
Looking to do these mods on my truck. Do you notice an increase in engine noise with the Pusher intake?
Does this void the warranty?
Absolutely not!
Aftermarket warranty Car shield also approved this pump install on my 2013 6.7.
It shouldn't because Ford knows that they're installing a piece of garbage from the factory. Sad that customers have to foot the bill though.
So did you switch additives and did you notice any changes if you did?
ARod is awesome !
When the warranty runs out on my Sprinter, what can A Rod do on a 3L, 6 cyl., MB diesel?
2 question what is the expected miles before this install needs replaced and if it goes bad does it put metal shaving threw out the engine?
Does that pusher intake improve fuel economy at all? what about power?
Speaking of repairs- have you had any more death wobbles since that work that was done in AZ? Ours has it.
No issues, but the steering components were changed again when we changed the shocks. So kinda brand new again.
Great information Thank You
What do you recommend for the other brands like Chevy and Dodge?? I've had a CP4 failure in my previous truck and it was costly ($6k).
This is why you get a Ram or GMC 😂. Great video
When you were at J. Cook park you were in Thompson Township (Esko) That is where our 16 acre farm is. I joined your “How to start a TH-cam channel “ and started documenting the farm. @Fisttimefarmer. I also have a F350 and have been researching how to handle the CP4 pump. Great video.
Well last month I had the disaster prevention kit put on a F250 2019. The super duty shop I went to said they have had only 3 cp4 failures since 2011. Talked me out of changing mine out.
Did I miss the part where you get better millage?
Did you notice any change in fuel mileage
Good video 😊 just saying that cp4 pump has been installed on all Ford and gm diesel for 10 years or so they at the factory for a while I have duramax didn't have the problem I changed trucks every 3 years but have seen pump explosion takes out fuel system sate travels
What year Super Duty’s have the bad pump?
2011-2024 6.7 Powerstrokes have the CP4 from the factory.
@@chebrotzmanThanks. I have a 2024.
Hey just break down and get you a Ram .LOL
Grand total with all labor and parts installed?
we've had our 6.7 for 7 years and has 136000 miles - no problems - always change fuel filters frequently. I've done a lot of research on the CP4 and talked with other owners. it seems failures occur when maintenance is not done and/or go-faster mods are made. Comments?
I have a guy who has a 2020 F450, does the necessary and THEN some. Left him and his poor family on the side of the road towing a big Trex 5th wheel trailer. Luckily for him it was warranty. Happens to the good and the peeps who don't....
It's a proven FACT that CP4 fuel pumps are made for European diesel and have a 7% failure rate versus a 1% failure rate of the fuel pumps that GM and RAM use. So yes, you may fall into the 93% that has no issues but that does not mean that the CP4 isn't an inferior product. It has nothing to do with maintenance. It's proven that it's European diesel vs American diesel.
WOW, why are some so negative??...think positive have a smile on your face😁 Ford haters: all the major OEM's have their problem...GM how about just pinning the crank gear instead of a full key way??....Ram with grid heater bolts falling off & whipping out #6 piston, also not to mention the transmission problem they have had for decades??...stop the hate
So Did it help with power or mpg?❤
After all these years with known CP4 problems, are current versions just as bad?
Yepppp
Enough equipment videos, time for some travel ones.
The failure rate of the CP-4 fuel pump is about 7% in the U.S. and 1% in Europe. The main reason is the lack of lubricants in the U.S. Using fuel additive’s will help prevent a majority of the problem. I believe it is over blown because of social media and internet hype.
nahhh, working in the trenches at the dealer since the 6.7 came out, additive has a lot to do with it, however it still doesn't negate the fact that the buckets turn in their bores allowing for the wonderful glitter paint to come alive......my 2 cents
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod Yea I watch your channel not as much as before since you have left the dealership. To me the cheapest way would be the disaster prevention kit and fuel additive’s. Just my 2 cents !
I agree but I don’t want to be a 7% er. My 1penny
Went with the disaster prevention kit in a 2019. I agree that it might be overhyped but glad I did it.
I saw on another channel not only do the buckets turn but the cam geometry is really aggressive, adding to the problem. Couple that with the fuel difference in the U.S…. Just crazy that Ford still uses it.
What? No comment about fuel economy or change in performance in the first impressions?
I didn't really notice any, but would require the exact same conditions to really test. We've had hills, headwind and weather from MI, WI, MN, NE
@2:50 mark, PTT stays mute on the HotShot EDT additive & instead pivots to promoting a different product. Why no comment on the EDT? And is he sponsored by the company who makes the additive he’s promoting?
Those pipes are just sexy! Great episode as always Marc.
