  • A fire on board eats its way through the inner workings of Swissair flight 111. It leaves the crew helpless as they lose communication with the ground and essential instruments disconnect. This incident killed over 200 passengers and crew.

    Hi, creator of the video here.
    I am thrilled to say that I may be in a position to regularly make videos for this channel. We will see how the next couple of months go as I aim to have at least another video done by the end of the year.
    Thanks, Anthony.

    Fortunately, or unfortunately, in SWR111's case, it would be the final 2 or 3 minutes, when the fire finally broke through the first and business class ceiling that anyone forward of the cockpit would have become aware of an actual fire. Smoke would have been apparent before that. It's likely the cabin temp at the front increased due to thermal radiation from the ceiling, but nothing alarming until the very end. Within the final minute or two, burning plastic from the ceiling was dripping down in the first and business class seats and aisle carpets, the curtain at the front between galleys 1, 2 and 3 and the first class cabin was on fire at the top, the ceiling above the cockpit door and galley was melting and likely on fire, and so the passengers in the final 60-90 seconds would have known of the fire, but whether they were conscious or not due to the steep dive is not known.
    Given how far the nose was pitched down combined with how fast they were going, they would have been thrown upwards to the ceiling and likely unconscious from the huge rush of blood to their brains, or that's what I hope anyway. The cockpit temperature at F/O Lowe's legs was hot enough to melt the checklist he was holding (melting point 110-130 degrees Celsius, skin burns at 120 degrees Celsius), due to the huge amount of hot smoke and flame pouring from the ceiling.
    - One of the pilot's headset had melted, the plastic had a melting point of 170+ degrees Celsius, and I think that Loew was simply in too much pain to have any control over the aircraft, he would have been very badly burnt, given the thermal conditions of the cockpit wreckage, and that sort of pain is incapacitating. It was a truly terrible place to be, in the front 50 feet of the airplane in the final 180 seconds. The cockpit was literally a furnace. The final nose down input I think was due to the possible fact that Lowe's body was leant against the yoke. Engine 1 was at 110% N1, engine 2 off, and engine 3 at just above flight idle, so the differential thrust would account for the roll. All that pain, and suffering, and being incinerated alive, all because the airline decided to install a non-tested IFEN?
    The in flight entertainment turned into a real horror movie.

      Its also highly likely that any smoke entering the cabin would have very quickly sooted up all surfaces including windscreens, guages, instruments, oxygen masks, everything.

    I would like to suggest you do a video on the UPS plane that caught fire, I think it was over Dubai. It had a bunch of cell phone batteries in the cargo that caught fire. All the instruments went out, the cockpit was full of smoke, and it was night time over the unilluminated desert. The pilots oxygen didn't work and he suffocated. The copilot kept the plane in the air a very long time and actually managed to make it to an airport, but was moving to fast for the ILS to capture, so the plane couldn't land itself. It was truly a nightmare scenario.

    Since the CVR and FDR cut out six minutes before the crash, we'll never know for sure what happened in the final six minutes, other than that the fire turned into an inferno, the Captain was incapacitated and the First Officer lost control of the plane. There is one eerie thing that's worth bringing up though. When the engines were recovered during the salvage operation, engine No.3, that is on the Boeing MD-11, the engine on the right wing, wasn't turning when it hit the water. This implied to the investigators that during the First Officer's attempt to control the aircraft, the No.3 engine was shut down. As to why he shut down the engine, we'll never know, although some have theorised that the engine might have somehow caught fire.

  • @harveytyler4869
    @harveytyler4869 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Ok the MD11 was a great jet airliner, it’s the idiots that installed a computer system without a coolant system that destroyed that plane, every accident of the DC10 or MD11 was pilot error, or mechanical errors, and even the storage door accidents were partly employee error, due to not taking the time to learn the system and if there’s a issue you should contact the manufacturer for a fix. Look at the Chicago crash, they blamed McDonald Douglas before they even had the info that shoddy maintenance created the issue.
    I’m a little bent on this because it ruined a company that created good aircraft at a reasonable price and employed a lot of Americans

    Salavge effort for this disaster traumatized a lot of the folks involved in it. Just so many severed body parts had to be found and it took a very long time for this tragedy to be dealt with. Hundreds of people dead and this is how they had to be found, piece by piece, limb by limb. Extensive forensics had to be found to even identify the vast majority of the dead.
    It cannot be stressed enough, the plane and its occupants were absolutely demolished.
    It also doesn’t help that the plane crashed in an area that is a breeding ground for tourist Darwin Award ceremonies, and some of these same forces that were traumatized by salvaging the parts and people of Swissair Flight 111 have to go rescue folks that get washed away in the same area where those remains had to be found.

Like the fuel dumping . Being on fire is one of the 1 things that you have to forget about dumping fuel. Landed soon as you possibly can no matter what . The moment you step on to a McDonnell Douglas or a Russian made Antonov or Tupolev, you are basically asking for it. Even Boeing had far too many incidents including fatal crashes. Airbus is by far the safest plane manufacturer. The figures speaks for themselves. I have flown with many airlines which have non existent pilot training or minimal servicing standards but luckily most of them use modern Airbus or Boeing aircraft. If its a good plane, even and an idiot flying a neglected plane will land you safely at your destination.
