    Adam, I am relatively young, and I have spent the last 20 years as an observer to people finding enjoyment in wasting their lives on social media and watching cat videos on TH-cam, never quite understanding what I was missing. Your channel is the only thing on the internet that makes me excited to click on hoping there is something new to watch and learn about (I give Ben Hunt and Rusty Ginn honorable mention). Have to agree with Mr. Preston--when a bubble appears in an asset, such as gold, there is a high probability it will move to extreme levels that go well past any rational constraints. As far as energy, if we only dedicated HALF of the ridiculous amounts of money in the CARES Act to building lithium mines in California and Arizona, we would already be on our way to mitigating the crisis. Sadly, our 21st century Presidents are more concerned with their present image, as opposed to our future dilemmas.

    I believe Doombird is far too optimistic regarding our energy predicament. It's EROEI (energy return on energy invested) that matters and, unfortunately, our "tight" oil reserves will require more energy to extract in the future. Industrial civilization can only thrive on large amounts of "free energy". It would be great if Wealthion invited a guest on the program who understands the physics of our energy predicament. Also, Doombird seems to think that inflation is all about supply chain bottlenecks; it's the money supply that matters in the end.

We could create an enormous oil glut just by building a rail system and public transportation. But no new endeavors are allowed -- unless Wall Street gets its way, everything will collapse; and Wall Street will get its way in the end, so it will all be good in the end. This is total BS. I caught the reference to "austrian school" which explains it all.

    We can't continue relying on fossil fuels for much longer. Global warming is a problem that is exogenous to the human/hydrocarbon energy economy, and therefore cannot be addressed in terms of what is most "economic". It's literally exogenous, because the energy we have been using to power development and growth was absorbed by plants and crustaceans over millions of years, only to be re-released in a very short amount of time through the burning of fossil fuels. The most "economic" solution to global warming is therefore not necessarily the most immediately economic one, rather it is the one that prevents runaway climate change. I would like to hear Doomberg explain why he discounts future costs from climate change so much in his "DCF" for the world economy. This is a kind of favoring efficiency over robustness no less than that of which he spoke in part one of this interview, the only difference is the timeframe.

    One barrel of oil contains 6.12 Gigajoules of latent energy. Nuclear power aside, there is no substance on earth having the energy density of oil. This is why we use it and demand is growing. I like the point Adam makes that people try to decouple energy from the economy. This is misguided and there is a strong correlation between inexpensive energy and growth in the economy. Nuclear fusion is the energy of the future and will provide inexpensive abundant renewable energy. We are years and possibly decades away from the needed technological breakthroughs for this. We need a transition plan and oil/natural gas will need to be the focal point. Solar and wind power are not going to hack it.

    • @PhoenixCrown
      @PhoenixCrown 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you know much about nuclear fusion? I'm very curious about this because it largely sounds like a prayer, "fusion will save us from our dependency on fossil fuels AND it's green!" Sounds like cold fusion of yesteryear and a little too good to be true.
      Fusion is accomplished by mashing atoms together. This is easy to do at the center of a star b/c gravity is fucking insane there. All of the "records" they've been setting lately in the news are in the form of sustaining fusion for a longer period of time. Do you know how they accomplish this? By EXPENDING more energy to maintain a fusion reaction in a setting that is not natural (i.e. not the center of a star). There has yet to be a net-positive energy return on a fusion reaction I believe, and I haven't found anywhere the theory for how this will be accomplished, let alone a prototype or experimental success that suggests it's possible anywhere on Earth.
      I would LOVE to hear arguments for fusion, and I will immediately invest in a company with a good scientific model and business plan. It just seems to be science fiction to me... for now =)

    • @jivepatrol6833
      @jivepatrol6833 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@PhoenixCrown - I am certainly not an expert on Fusion energy. No one really knows if we will have "the" breakthrough leading to an almost infinite supply of clean and renewable energy. However, I am sure if someone predicted in 1890 that we would soon have widespread use of electricity in our homes, that person would have been looked at with great skepticism. Well along came Nikola Tesla with his theories and mathematical genius and George Westinghouse with his practical inventive genius and resources to develop Alternating Current and all associate distribution systems. There may be a Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse in the future for Fusion energy. Kind Regards.

    • @simoncrooke1644
      @simoncrooke1644 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PhoenixCrown So you think sustained unnatural fusion won't be possible in the future? Sustained nuclear fission is unnatural yet we do it continuously now. Once we couldn't fly but now it's routine. Also, highly unnatural. Come to think of it, most things humans do are unnatural but yet they occur with ease. The centre of the sun is at a density of 166 g/cm² and 16 million K. These conditions allow fusion to occur easily but do do not preclude other conditions like higher temperatures and pressures. We will crack this nut eventually. It could decades or even centuries but we'll get there.

    • @michaels4255
      @michaels4255 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fusion requires atoms of tritium and deuterium (isotopes of hydrogen). Currently the only known way of getting large quantities of tritium, which is less common than deuterium, is by irradiating the no. 6 isotope of lithium (Li6), but Li6 is not super abundant and would soon be depleted IF we ever find a way to create sustained fusion reactions on earth, and then get the EROEI up to a level that will make it worth deploying as a practical energy source. The EV industry also needs lithium (regardless of isotope), so IF a commercially viable fusion reactor is ever developed, there may not be enough lithium remaining provide sufficient quantities of tritium to fuel it. Even assuming the latter two problems can actually be solved (our engineers and scientists have been trying to solve them since the 1950s), we will likely be in a severe energy crisis well before then.
      Deuterium can be extracted from the hydrogen in seawater (about 1 atom in 6700 of the hydrogen in seawater molecules, where it is of course bound with oxygen, will be a deuterium atom), but that is an energy intensive process, which brings us back to problems with the EROEI factor.
      And even after solving the practical problems, you still have to build a whole lot of power plants, which requires decades of time AND lots of surplus energy. And what about materials? Will they be as materials intensive as fission? (I am sure, but no one actually talks about it.) What will their working lifespan be and how much energy will be required to decommission them at the end of their working lives? Will the old materials (as is the case with fission plants) be too "hot" to reuse and thus get taken off the market at the end of the plant's useful life? Fusion also produces radioactive waste products which will have to be dealt with, just as fission plant waste must be dealt with. If we did manage to obtain enough fuel at a relatively high EROEI (but don't count on it), that waste could grow to very high levels. (Fission waste quantities are ultimately manageable because we will run out of U235 before the quantity of waste becomes too large to deal with.)

    • @PhoenixCrown
      @PhoenixCrown 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaels4255 Wow thanks for all this, really cool stuff.
      My conclusion... why don't we just stick with fission b/c it's actually possible? I get there's the waste element, but it seems like any transition away from fossil fuels demands this source of energy unless the human population drops by 90% in short order.

    let this sink in:
    Nasif Nahle, PhD, of the University of Nuevo Leon in Mexico. While the John Cook
    blog SkepticalScience maintains that CO2 molecules function as a blanket for slow heat loss, the actual
    time-lapse involved proves otherwise. Nahle found the “mean free path” for a quantum wave to pass
    through the atmosphere before colliding with a CO2 Molecule is about 33 meters. Such a wide chasm
    between molecular collisions would appear to undermine a visualization of CO2 functioning like a
    blanket does. Even more saliently, Nahle determined that the rate at which CO2 molecules can retain
    heat at the surface may only last about 0.0001 of a second. If heat-loss is slowed down at a rate of
    0.0001 of a second by CO2 molecules, the atmospheric CO2 concentration-whether it’s 300 PPM or
    400 PPM-effectively doesn’t matter. The time-lapse differential would be immaterial for either
    concentration.

    The assertion that economy is connected to energy is entirely accurate. It is equally true that economy is connected to ecology. GDP correlates with energy consumption. GDP also correlates with atmospheric GHG. Entropy is the driving force of economy, because the economy is not efficient. The economy cannot function against nature, it is geophysically impossible to sustain. So glossing over the pertinent issue as “ESG mandates”, is disingenuous and a disservice anyone seeking complete knowledge.
