    I have the same notebook, i'll upgrade it like you did. Very informative and nice video, thank you.
    Update: I purchased 16 GB 2400 MHz sodimm(Kingston) DDR4 and installed. Worked flawlessly. When i upgraded to 20 GB, total memory for VGA increased to 10gb (2+8 shared). Now using Unity is way more snappier. Thank you again.

      @@oveyo8254 I think you can easily decide with monitoring your ram while you're using the most demanding programs. Mine was not enough so this upgrade really solved my problem. If you're not gaming on your laptop, I think it'll be enough. For example, now mine using up to 14 GB ram while on heavy load.

    Excellent video. Worked exactly as shown. It was a bit tricky taking the plastic cover off after removing the screws. Start at the back on the ends of the hinges with a small screw driver or knife and work from that end. After it was started it was easy. Wear a grounding bracelet as in the video. Putting it back together was also very easy. Thanks very much.

    Hey man, great tutorial.. straight to the point! I have the same laptop but on Lenovo's website they say the max ram capacity is 12gb, does that mean the 16gb stick will cause problems in future?

    • @whattmeter
      @whattmeter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I’ve been using it for work long hours. Never had any issues yet. I could be wrong but it could be the same like dell where they have recommended ram which was when they designed the laptop. Then when the bios gets updated they allow more ram. If they really wanted to prevent more than 12gb they could control it with the bios update. It’s kinda like how some laptops can only run 2400mhz ram. Even if you put a ram with 2666mhz, it only runs it at 2400mhz because they capped it. Just my opinion though. Issue is this laptop has no dedicated gpu memory so it relies a lot on the ram

    • @whattmeter
      @whattmeter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Oh yeah i would double check to make sure the cpu you have can handle the upgrade or run crucial scanner to double check if the ram upgrade is possible

    • @nishant5833
      @nishant5833 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      So I have the Ryzen 5 3500u version with the Vega 8 integrated graphics..and yeah it takes up a lot of ram!
      On Crucial website it says that the laptop can support 20GB ram but on Lenovo's Forums people are saying do not exceed the maximum 12 gigs... I want to upgrade soon and I'm confused between the 12 and 20 gigs. How do I check if it's safe to upgrade to 20 tho?

    • @whattmeter
      @whattmeter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you are having doubts just play it safe. That ryzen 5 can handle it but if other people are saying they have issues with 20gb probably best to play it safe. I wonder if those having issues updated their bios. But in my opinion, best to play it safe and stick to the official lenovo website recommendations especially if you still have a warranty. The ryzen 5 with vega 8 integrated graphics! Very nice! Maybe there’s an incompatibility issue with this cpu, the 4gb ram integrated then the dim slot. The ryzen gets an increased performance boost with dual channel but maybe since it’s a different setup there’s some issue

      @@whattmeter From what I can tell, the max gb upgrade is based on what model of Lenovo Ideapad S145, there are SEVERAL versions with different Chips, so I think if you have the Intel chip you can upgrade to 20Gb but if you have AMD like me, 12Gb may be the max.

    I see that it has been a long time since this video was shared. I am a little late to write this, my laptop is Lenovo ideapad s145-15api model. It has Ryzen 5 3500u and 4gb ram soldered to the motherboard + there is an empty ram slot here. I thought about buying 16gb ddr4 2400mhz ram, but the max ram is said to be 12gb or 16gb. If I buy 16gb ram I will reach 16+4gb 20gb ram but I am not sure about this. If you have any thoughts, please tell me.

    or will it affect anything interms of improvements or issues

    Hello one question. When you insert more memory than allowed, the laptop slows down at startup or what problems have you had?

      Personal I have not had any issues at all. It’s also possible that the extra memory is used in the shared gpu memory. This laptop is still my daily driver with the same ram I installed. I suppose it really depends on the specs of the pc

      @@whattmeter When you installed the 16BG of RAM, did you increase the shared memory of the gpu? and how much did it increase?

    • @whattmeter

      Yes it did. When I get home I will check.

      Shared gpu memory is 9.9gb after upgrade. There’s no dedicated gpu memory on this model laptop so maybe that’s why I never had issues?!

    HI. i have lenovo Ideapad 3. it has 4gb soldered to the motherboard and 4gb removeable. i wanted to increase my ram with 16gb stick. my concern is if i put 16 gb and theres also 4gb inbuilt and its make total of 20GB which i 4gb more than the max memeory capacity of my laptop. can i do this or i should buy just 8gb of ram stick ? please help

      Officially, the max recommended is adding only 8gb so the total would be 12gb ram. Although I've been using 20gb and I still use this computer until now for work. You can run cmd as adming, then type wmic memphysical get maxcapacity, and press Enter. Convert the kb to MB and that is the official max ram supported by your laptop.

    Hello sir i have the same laptop and i wanted to upgrade the ram but i don't know what is compatible or not. Does ram on pc works in the same laptop you're using in the tutorial?

      It depends on motherboard
      But actually saying, any SODIMM DDR4 stick up to 16GB will work 100% with no issues
      like that's how it works now
