    The east coast states (Kelantan, Trengganu, Pahang) have much to offer in term of experience, which is very much different from the west coast. The east coast vibe tends to be more lay back, chill and calm. The infrastructure is more rudimental and rustic, but the charm is the friendliness and helpfulness of the people.
    And the food…. The variety is different from the west coast which then offer a different gastronomical experience.

    you can eat anything in Malaysia with your style but for Nasi Kerabu, you must mix all ingredients perfectly together (except an additional side dish). It is a must. that is how you can taste the real taste of nasi kerabu.

      Ahhh, thanks for the tip Ayu! We'll have to eat it like that next time. Any excuse for eating Nasi Kerabu, it was one of our favourite Malaysian dishes.😋😋

      Yes...please mix the rice, herbs, crackers ( keropok) etc except for the chicken or other side dishes.
      I have seen utubers tasted the rice separately but was polite enough to give a positive compliment which I think were not genuine. Please mix them well otherwise you would think the hoo haa over nasi kerabu was nothing 😢

      @@massimomassimo5464 Thanks for the advice Massimo Massimo. We have had a lot of comments about not eating Nasi Kerabu properly, so will have to fix that for next time we visit.

      @@BucketListTravellers We didn't have much time, unfortunately. We arrived on a Thursday afternoon and immediately went to the laundromat when we should have been out seeing things. Friday we caught the city market in the morning (bought rambutan and mangosteen, tried some delicious coconut and rice treats) and the night market, but all the other sights were closed, so we spent the afternoon exploring Wat Phothivihan. People in Kota Bharu were very friendly, and a man in the laundromat struck up a conversation with us. Our stroke of luck was visiting Cik Minah Songket & Batik, a textile business that sold sarongs and locally woven songket. When we told the owner we're from Oregon, in America, she immediately called her son, who joined us to talk over coffee. He went to the University of Oregon at the same time as my husband. Next time I want to see spinning tops, traditional kites, the bird song competition and more batik. But the beautiful ikat sarong I bought was the best souvenir of our entire trip.

    A place where the japanese attacked the peninsula down to singapore. No one expected that. Even the 2 warships - Prince of Wales and Repulse were sunk there.

      Yes there is a lot of historical significance in Kota Bharu, not only from the influences of Malay culture but to WW2 as well. We saw that you can do dives to the ship wrecks.

    Many traditional cultures of kelantanese were disallowed there as the state gov does not want cultural appropriation where there are elements of Hinduism. Eg mak Yong dance. Even unesco has voiced their concern about such ban.

    • @BucketListTravellers
      @BucketListTravellers  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is fascinating to know, thanks for sharing Keang. We had assumed that there was a lot of religious tolerance, given the Buddhist temples in an area that is predominantly Muslim.

    • @keangwooichoo6138
      @keangwooichoo6138 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bucket List Travellers oh Buddhism is not practiced by malays. So they will not touch that. Mak Yong is a dance practiced by malays for many many generations. So the state government under PAS disallowed it. For me, they are the cause of disunity as they mix religion with politics. No other political parties do that by mixing.

    • @keangwooichoo6138
      @keangwooichoo6138 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bucket List Travellers so malays(perhaps kelantanese) living in other states not under pas try to keep it alive. Hopefully for next generations.
