      Make it a Chatterfang deck tech, because a bunch of squirrels looking to commit murder-suicide is about the level of stoned we're talking about the audience being.

    • @ducktheseraph
      @ducktheseraph 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrisporter4993 what does this mean? Is there a lore thing about the squirrels being recklessly homicidal and the threshold they have for that is the same level of high? I'm hoping I'm just slightly autistic and you're not saying being stoned has anything to do with being violent.

    • @chrisporter4993
      @chrisporter4993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ducktheseraph Chatterfang is a green commander who's all about creating and sacrificing squirrels for profit, and to nuke enemy creatures. The implication was that it's a green commander with a goofy premise that kind of meshes with stoner humor. Alternatively you could do a deck tech about a commander that puts everyone at the table to sleep, I guess, but violence was never the theory behind the suggestion. Just pure stoner funnies.

    I just played a pick up game of commander at PAX. One player was hard targeting another. Opp agent, lock outs etc. The locked down player was getting pinged to death, so I used a few pings to help destroy the things locking him down. I was trying to even out the field to make it more fun.
    Then Delina prayed to the Lords of Chaos, dealt 60 damage to the board and they all targeted me instead. I was instantly killed by an infect flyer, but at least the other two stopped going after each other a throats.

    Most "cutthroat" deck that I've played against (amazing experience) had Tevesh Szat + Kraum, Ludevic's Opus as the partner commanders. It used tutors and aggressive draws to find Divergent Transformations. Once that is in hand, Tevesh Szat is cast. He creates two Thrull creature tokens. Divergent Transformations is cast, targeting the Thrulls to grab the ONLY TWO creatures in the deck: Tergrid, God of Fright and Sire of Insanity. At the end of the turn EACH PLAYER discards their hand, and Tergrid's ability says it's controller may gain control of each permanent card discarded by its controller's opponents. It's not an instant concede, but it's VERY close.

    I think it must also be mentioned that cutthroat doesn't necessarily mean "salt". At cEDH tables or more optimized levels of play, it's natural to be singled out because of a board state or via threat assessment (this player can win anytime). And while it is fair to say that Commander is a casual format, I feel it must be reiterated that it really depends on the people you play with.
    I played a stax deck once and got singled out during the games we played. At no point was I salty, because I know playing Stax would draw aggro from the other players in a pod. I played a fast combo deck once and got singled out, because I was in a position to win if the other players don't take me out of the game. Was I ever salty? No, because my playgroup knows that even if we single out a player, it's the game and not the player.

    I don't think it's correct to associate being competitive with having 'no mercy' because you can create an image that being competitive is being mean to other people, and that's NOT the cause. Being competitive is all about playing your best, against other people doing the same. Mean magic players aren't competitive(and they probably don't like playing on a competitive, even, table either), they are just mean, no matter the deck. While i agree there are "cutthroat" cards in a casual environment, having a competitive mindset is not the problem, being and asshole to other people is.

    Yo in regards to stax, it's basically just a response to ramp. If you're in a meta where people are heavily land ramping with green or dumping mana rocks out and going fast fast fast, stax strategies are a viable counter to that. Nevermind "cutthroat" or not. Not all commamders/color combinations are created equal. Stax is just another strategy - slow the faster decks down till you get to your thing before they get to theirs. Enjoy

And honestly, it doesn't feel that oppressive, because everyone loves to play the minigame of choosing between ramp and card draw every turn cycle. It's been a while since I played it, but I might take it out next time.

    One card that I find ironically cutthroat is Serra the Benevolent. With a few proliferate triggers she can ult same turn and get you a just ridiculous emblem. But if not, it's a one turn clock that takes all attention off the rest of your board. Or, worst case scenario, you just really need a creature and it's a slightly cheaper Serra Angel. There are still a lot of wincons that kill you after ult, but if it goes down you basically stop being attacked for the rest of the game unless someone has infect. It seems cutthroat when I play it, but I play it in mono white where you need a few big kids to sit on your side of the teeter-totter.

      I think that's the problem with a lot of Stax cards from history: most of them hurt players in weak positions more than players in strong positions because of their emphasis on being symmetrical. White lockdown cards could (and should) have kept getting printed if R&D explored cards that "force fairness" more, rather than deciding that prevention was inherently unfun and avoiding it whenever possible - it would give White something to do other than tokens (decent), enchantments (niche), lifegain (90% awful), or being the worse version of Black as a support color. When prison cards weaken busted strategies and force people to play fair, that's significantly better than "Sorry you're the one with two lands left when I make everyone sacrifice three."
