United's defence and midfield have done him no favours, but at the end of the day he has made more mistakes and poor save attempts within the first 10 games of the season than some keepers would have a compilation of for a whole season. With onana we have to change our approach, especially with passing options to the keeper and onana himself needs to step outside that box more, I know he's short on confidence but he needs to attack the attackers more and own the 18 yard, he's too passive and that's why the he makes contemplations, literally 50/50 gambles, and so far he's failed at them.

If i may put it in simple terms, as we know that the primary purpose of a goalkeeper is to save shots and avoid goals, i can with confidence say that David de gea would save atleast half of the goals onana has conceded. So, long story short he's not a better keeper that de gea who united should have never let go, even with his occasional mistakes he had been saving united single handedly for a long time. As a rival fan I'll be happier with onana in goal than de gea, becaus even at his best onana is an average shot stopper (forget about his ball playing ability), but when de gea is in mood its almost impossible to put the ball past him in the goal. The near post thing is an absolute myth. Completely archaic. If you look at clips from like the 70s the keepers stand at the near post and leave the whole rest of the goal open which looking back now is absolutely ridiculous. Other keepers are able to prevent goals going in at the near post and not concede ridiculous goals like onana by over committing. It's lazy goalkeeping, he's trying to cheat.

I think Onana might just be Pepe Reina light. I think one of the biggest problems for Onana is that Manchester United biggest rivals have 2 best goalies in the league and possibly world, and both came in and bossed it from day one and looked worth every penny what the team paid for them. Chelsea tried it and got burned BIG time, and Kepa never really recovered. Onana is much more experienced and accomplished but with move and play he does being overanalyzed, there is a chance he might follow the same path.

His shot stopping has looked sub-par so far but there is only so much a keeper can do in build-up considering Varane and Casemiro are terrible at playing out from the back. They constantly move the ball around in the back third, don't get into better positions to receive the ball and give it away cheaply. All this invites pressure on the defence. Lisandro Martinez is United's only good ball-playing defender and has been injured this season.

    @Christian_Bagger 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

As I said when he was first rumored to United… keepers like Alison, Neuer and Ederson are freak examples. I don’t buy into the whole sweeper, ballplaying goalkeeper. Sure, to squeeze a bit of extra juice and you’ve two equally skilled goalkeeper and one can sweep and the other cannot, take the sweeper… but in the end of the day, the fundament and the top of the hierarchy for any goalkeeper should be your ability to shotstop. Sure, you an screen and mitigate chance and perhaps even create, but how many of those ball playing moves are going to be converted to goals? You’re mitigating 3 chance, but once a ball hit a target, you don’t have the ability to stop the shot. Ultimately your objective is to prevent the ball going in. No goalkeeper has the talent to be on the pitch on a professional other than GK. Likewise no other players can play goalkeeper at a professional level. You can have a GK being good at mitigating but the shoots will come eventually at the rate in which you mitigate won’t line up in that equation in the end. Sweeping and ballplaying keepers is a nice little addition, can be potent but it cannot be on the expense of traditional GK quality.
I never fancied Onana as a goalkeeper on the biggest level. The first two games for United, he was the best player on the pitch, and I hope he were proven me wrong and I was optimistic. He’s now one of the worst goalkeepers, but it’s important to consider that changing a goalkeeper is a fundamental groundbreaking switch you can do to a lineup. It takes longer than any other positions to get right. Many starts shaky. I think it’s horrible at the moment, and even though I don’t fancy him as a GK, I still believe this is way under his level and he needs more time to settle in, hopefully he’ll get into it… but this was too soon to let go of De Gea. One more year… and I don’t for the life of me get, why United didn’t go for Donnarumma when he was a free agent.

For goalkeeping ability, he will always be compared poorly against De Gea, the last of his breed and the best shot stopper in the world bar none. Other keeper's miracle save is De Gea's routine, what is "can't do anything about it" to other keeper is a blunder for De Gea. For people and fans to expect Onana to match De Gea in shot stopping from the get go is ludicrous.
The thing is, I notice and like how fast Onana is in coming off the line, and while it hasn't come to fruition we can already see how great his distribution is, and now I no longer have a mini heart attack when the goalkeeper has his feet on the ball.
All in all, Onana is needed for the kind of football United and Ten Haag wants to play... next is whether the players in front of him can play the way Ten Haag wants.

    I enjoyed this analysis.
The initial patterns in 23-24 - playing out - were SO clear and such a drastic change for the squad from work with DDG, it seemed at once a big improvement but led to a worry (for me) of far too much overreliance on the new slow and intricate methods. Then BAM!, injuries to the back line & a growing lack of confidence as the masses want to jump on the new guy's back. The sub keeper is also great at the new playing out methods, but like Onana might not approach DDG as a shot-stopper.
I think the best idea is to press on and SUPER DRILL that defence to adapt. When I see City's ultra-disciplined players in comparison, it almost makes one weep: tirelessly creating space to receive passes

With United however those moments happen more frequently because those dangerous moments are forced more by the opponents. The Ajax he played for was a lot more dominant than the current United. I think Onana would perform on his Ajax level if he for example played for City. But he still wouldn't be as good as Ederson or Alisson. He'd still have that risky factor in his game.

Sanity check on your goalkeeper PSxG model:
This data says the keepers in this sample have on average conceded 11% fewer goals than expected.
That's a huge deviation from the 0 to the slightly above 0 (only counts keepers with 500+ mins so you'd expect a slight skew away from 0) you'd expect, and the total sample size is large enough to expect small errors if the model is good (187 total PSxG).
From this I conclude that this model likely isn't good enough to be used for any good level of analysis.

On the RW at 5:58 is Jadon Sancho, who I can’t imagine is part of the lineup ETH would “most want to use” at this point

I think he meant "excepting injury, form, and personal issues"
I mean, this never actually happens in work or football ot life, but I think that's what he was getting at.

It could just be Onana getting used to Prem football the same way most new players do except as a keeper, you don’t get any leniency for not being ready and you get killed whereas when you’re a striker, people can often say soon you’ll be putting the ball into the net. The issue is with the build up because Ten Hag has Onana playing the wrong style of build-up. I have no idea why Ten Hag doesn’t let Onana just send the ball to the attack or midfielders and why he makes him just pass it out because he didn’t buy him to just pass it or throw it 5 yards. It’s a mixture of not being ready yet and not being able to play the football he wants to play. A mix that can make a nightmare for Onana.

Relax. You people got startled too much. De Gea was error-prone in his first 2 years, but he did well up to the end of his career.

weird to say Onana wasnt a good shot stopper since he had a PSXGP of 7+ in the champions league last season which is mind boggling and he had solid numbers for ajax. also weird to talk about his passing and then use the season at inter where he used that attribute the least in his career
