This was amazing! I absolutely loved the video and the production quality was top notch. The wand looks like it's so much fun.
I made a wand with a button which triggered a multi colored auto blinking led in a epoxy crystal in the base/hilt and a bright white led on the tip. It was simpler in that there was no programming and custom pcb however the design challenges were similar because I used a small lipo battery and a bms module along with an ultra mini 5v boost converter. The button was between the bms and the boost converter to ensure no current flowed when the button was inactive. I wired in a small micro usb port and the wand was rechargeable. In short, you may consider making a rechargeable wand and even include simple bms circuitry in your existing bms, a 100 or 200 mAh lipo would be plenty sufficient (just ensure it has a slow rate of charge for such a small lipo). This might alleviate some of the design challenges of the removable and large battery holder.
That was really fun to watch. I can see a lot of work went into making that wand. It seems such a simple idea, right? And then before it all comes together it turns out a lot more complicated than it looked. But the result is great! Well done. Love the video editing too.

With the 3 access accelerometer, you have an extractable gravity vector which, when subtracted from the acceleration matrix tells you which direction is down and thus the orientation of the wand. This means that the spell activation movements can be independent of the rotation of the sensor.
Yes, you are right, it can be done through matrix. The main reason why I use the dot was time saving. It was just super easy and it helped a lot. Initially we did try to recalculate the position of the board based on gravity (my son was playing with that), but it was more math and it would require more time to write the software for that small microcontroller to make the recognition to work reliably, so I just added the dot and it made everything much more simple. PS: Also, it makes it harder for people who do not know how to hold the wand to use it - so the wand will only work for the real wizards who know the secret.

A few years back i was in a Harry Potter themed escape room. The final puzzle involved finding a wand and finding the correct spells to unlock the door. We found all of the movements, but the wand was not registering them, except sometimes the first one. I found a button on it and was "sweet a button, it must boost the power or something" turned out it was a button for pairing to some other part of the system and i completely bricked the wand :D
After the guy at the control room saw that we were making the correct movements, he let us out manually. After that he could not even get the wand to work at all. I believe that the batteries had died.
This appears to be working a lot better than that one.

I loved it! It would be really good if the batteries were chargeable via USB, so the user (let's say I give it to my nephew as a birthday present) doesn't need to unscrew the wand to change the batteries; just plug it in with her cellphone charger!! I think it may be a great idea, but not sure if it is easy to implement in your design. 🤔

it's so simple just buy a small high voltage generator and apply 3v on it to turn it into 400k volts

This is something similar to what I want to make. I want to make a wand that when when you flick your wrist the led flashes quickly kind of like the spells in the movies but I have no knowledge of coding or anything like that

Nice form factor. The lr44’s should have more capacity though and overall I’d imagine power it quite a bit longer.
My first guess was the problem is that you used MPLAB
MPLAB was a big issue in this project ... constantly freezing - especially during debugging.
This was a good video. It's nice to see some videos for the beginner/maker, mixed in with your usual videos for professional engineers.
However, the ending took me by surprise, and was a little jarring.

When you said that the box should contain what engineers are actually afraid of, I was genuinely wondering how you were going to visually represent an "intermittent fault", or a "component shortage" coming out of the box.
It simply never occurred to me that in 2021, anyone would perpetuate the old 1950's stereotype of engineers being men, with such poor social skills that they were afraid of women.
Maybe this is a national difference(?), but in the UK, and certainly at the companies I have worked at, about 50% of the professional design engineers were women anyway, and everyone got along just fine.
Thank you Nicholas. We had also "A client calling: It's not working ....", but I really liked the current one. The girl who come up with the idea, she actually asked around and this was the top result of her survey :). I agree, I knew this may be different between countries .. and also between generations, so yes, I was not sure how some people may react. Now, when we are talking about that, it could be interesting to know what is other's experience. PS: 50% women, wow!

You spent all that time to make something so cool, but then went and pulled the move of a true ass hole by making it require FIVE CR2032 cells!! 😉😂
I was thinking about re-chargeable battery, but that would make the circuit more complicated ... and I wanted to keep it super simple to use it for learning basic circuits.
