Will work on camera settings over next few videos. Have to adjust to the Samsung S24 Ultra settings. At least the microphone sounds better 😁 The last video I made with the Google Pixel 8 Pro and the Rode Podmic was the Tin Hifi T2 mkii, here's a link: th-cam.com/video/_XDbxiKcYOA/w-d-xo.html The same microphone is used to record this video on the Samsung S24 Ultra.
I own several phones, both Android and Apple, and have noticed it is quite a "hit or miss" affair in regard which dongles will work with each brand of device. However, I tend to favour certain Infinix and Tecno models (both brands are produced by the same company, coincidentally).
Very interesting video. Who would've thought that phone USB ports aren't all the same. I assumed they all worked the same way. Thank you for this informative video.
USB-C system has been a problem from the time it started showing up on phones. The Type-C cables being sold on Amazon were infamously found (by a Google engineer) to be of extremely varied qualities from those that work well to the ones that might destroy your devices. The USB-C connector itself being the way it is makes life much due to its ubiquity and ease of use, but the actual specifications from device to device can vary greatly.
From my experience iBasso DC03Pro, DC04Pro, Fiio KA5, 7Hz SevenHertz 71, DragonFly Black and Cobalt, JCally AP10, CenTrance DACport HD works without issues with Pixel 8 Pro. Truthear SHIO worked, but had strange clicks and cracks from time to time, while Moondrop DAWN did not work and had this loud static like you mentioned.
Similar Dongle DAC issue here. Moondrop Dawn Pro does not work. However, IFI micro Idsd signature work fine. I wish there was a list or specsheet of what works and what doesn't.
Thanks you for the video. I am not longer feeling alone in this problem. I just upgraded Samsung Galaxy A52 for the Pixel 8 Pro and my audio frustration is like yours. Now I am recording with the Samsung until Google acknowledges and fix the problem. However, I already created a ticket in Google, and funny enough the Google Rep told me that no one complained about that issue :( ... Let's keep the finger crossed until this goes to a happy ending.
I noticed it the most with dongles that were balanced or higher outputs. Maybe it's something to do with the region of purchase and use. Or something to do with the service provider or if it's unlocked. Glad it works for you.
Seems the ext. mic. issue was already present with the Pixel 6... I guess Google decides what's best for us. I'm happy you pointed this out, because I was considering changing to a Pixel in time. I guess the build in thermometer is for frustrated customers 😂
I have the Nubia redmagic 8 pro and one of the reasons I bought it was because of the 3.5mm headphone jack. I have some portable dac/amp dongles but I forget them or just don't want to carry them around sometimes so for me the 3.5mm jack is a must on a smartphone.
I've tried both the FIIO BTR15 and BTR5 and a couple of cheap dongles...they all work flawlessly with my Pixel 8 Pro. I haven't tried nearly as many things as you, but I have had no issues with audio with my Pixel 8 Pro. Sucks that it sucked for you... enjoy the Galaxy.
That's really weird. I bought my Pixel 8 (not Pro) in Oct 2023 as well, but I have absolutely no issues with dongle DACs and IEMs. The volume bar is usually at 10 to 15% and the sound is loud enough. My assortment of Fiio, 7Hz, Hidizs, Moondrop DACs/IEMs all work quite satisfyingly. I won't call myself an audiophile, but I enjoy music and I keep mid-tier home audio gear. I'm not a content creator, so I don't know if my Pixel 8 plays nice with mics and other accessories.
For some reason. Xiaomi phone after update from miui into Hyperos. there are an option to disable Audio effect processing like from it's dolby atmos and Xiaomi sound. if you Plug your dac or your tws there are option Dolby, Xiaomi sound, Orginial. the original one make sounds more netral without boost in any freq. its sounds similar when i listen on my laptop with all audio effect like dts, and windows spatial off. for this setting I really appreciate it. Especially this on Mediatek Soc phone. not on Snapdragon. my phone Xiaomi 13T.
I have just got a Pixel 8 and noticed the same issue. Some dongles work fine but some like the iFo Go Link will not work, I got the same static at Max volume and it scared the hell out of me. I am thinking of returning as I only have it several days now. Thanks for the confirmation on this issue.
Don't think they hate audiophiles, they are just not a priority. I'm guessing software/firmware updates will fix this in the future. How long in the future is the question. Thought this was funny, the add that played after the video ended was for a Pixel 8.
I actually had a problem recently with iPhone 14 and Hiby FC4. The problem is that it requires more power than the iPhone allows. And also it differed between cables. Some worked for a long time and then stopped, some didnt work altogether and some stopped working after a very short time. It was not the contact, it was the cable. No such problem with the old iPhone XR.
@@TheHonestAudiophile yeah, for example the original Fiio dongle cable didn't work, but some no brand cable from aliexpress did. I changed my stance on dongles a lot. I thought it was the revolution in portable audio, but after experiencing the turnover of broken cables and the issues with compatibility on both iPhone and Android, I became skeptical and opted for the Fiio Utws3 wireless adapters.
I have Shanling UA5 which has worked well. Used with letshuoer s12. Also no issues with the iFi hip dac 2. I wonder if Android updates have resolved these issues?
I have only tried a few USB dongles on my Pixel 8 Pro but I noticed that the audio quality was noticeably lower than on my old One Plus 9. Thankfully I mostly use Bluetooth and I have found that it works really well with my Sony A55 and ZX300 over LDAC. That said, there is no excuse for the lack of features on a flagship Google phone. The phone is also very glitchy with apps freezing and other weird UI issues that haven't been fixed. I'll probably be going back to Sony or OnePlus for my next phone in 3 years.
Wow. This couldn't have come at a better time. I just missed the "trade in anything, get s24 almost free" and was about to pull the trigger on the 8 Pro.
This could be because of the SOC used by google which is their own custom chip. Samsung uses qualcomm or exynos (samsung clone of the qualcomm chip) which has been with phones since the start and probably has alot of usb certificates built in already as well as usb handshake protocols. I had a similar problem with the Redmi note 13 which uses a qualcomm chip. The problem with that was the OS itself😅 MiUi is absolute garbage for dongles. It doesnt allow them to turn on exclusive mode instead it automatically enables the built in dsp. For reference, mediatek also has really good soc’s for dongles. Maybe even better than qualcomm except for bluetooth since qualcomm chips have support for aptx and mediatek does not. Mediatek chips do have native support for ldac though.
Sheesh, Ive been wanting a pixel since they came out but it always falls short!!!! Woooo you should review Questyles NHB 15 USB-C IEMs. I want to hear what you think about the ieams and the built in dac.
This is the way pixel does things lol. Same thing happened with the 6 pro and 7 pro. Six months later after updates all the dongles work. Don't know why they do this
David, I've been a Pixel user for about 4 years and I've never had issues with usb audio. I own a Pixel 8 now and I'm using the Hidizs XO dongle ( I bought it because of your recommendation) and another dongle DAC with integrated battery, both with balanced and non balanced outputs and both work very well. Maybe I'm lucky or maybe you should try to check the phone settings, for example in developers options verify if the "disable usb audio routing" is on, you should turn it off. Thanks for your review, very useful as usual.
As mentioned in the video, some work some don't. Also mentioned in the video, I changed the settings and tested. Glad you are able to use with your current dongle of choice.
FYI Yes the google pixel 8 does not work with most Dac's However you can use Software that has dedicated drivers which bypass the Pixel USB. Use HF player. Its Free and you can use your Dac with it. It has the drivers. I use the Moon drop pro dac and works great with the Pixel 8 but only with this software.
Thanks for the Video. Have you tried using an external USB-C Power with the USB Microphones and Dongles encase the Phone's USB Port is under powered? I have a RealMe Phone with 3.5mm, but using a USB Dongle is a pain as the OTG Capabilities Automatically Turn Off after you stop playing music for 5min. You then have to trawl through the settings to reinitialise. A proper pain. Thankfully I now own a FiiO M11 Plus which solves the issues...
Yep, I just upgraded to the Google pixel 8 pro on Sunday the 22nd with the intention of using it for recording music and hooking up the audio interface with it. And etc. Etc. And to my disgust I'm having a lot of the same problems you're talking about. And while I thought this was going to be one of the phones I could use to really take that next step with it, unfortunately I have to take that back pedal too. And I'm really really disgusted that I had to pay the money for this phone to have it not do what I wanted it to do. I've never bought a really high dollar phone for any reason until now and then the one that I do pay the money for ends up being this. I sure wish it was returnable to tell him that if it's not performing the way it should and just get something else, but I guess I'm stuck. I appreciate your video though. Good looking out
@@TheHonestAudiophile Thanks I appreciate it. I just went and ordered an HP desktop refurbished for $100 solely for my home studio and although it won't be portable it will handle everything I throw at it
Second it. Same problem. My main phone is always Samsung galaxy s24 ultra or S 23 ultra before that. However my second phone is Google pixel 8 not pro but I still have the same issue you have. I plugged Moondrop moon river 2 ti and almost bleed through my ears. There is no issue on my primary, but on Pixel 8, it's like screeching static. I don't know what is the issue though. Muse m3 mk2 works fine, but m4 same issue on this phone. I blamed it first on the dongle than on 4.4mm port, but it's damn phone. its very frustrating the Pixle 8 pro. I have a Mackie pro fx mixer. I can sing a couple of songs and as soon as i multi task my phone, unplug the Dac amp it causes some horrendous static noose, play back play into and streaming. the phone actually starts off fine. Then i get a problem. It does seem that the google pixel and the android OS has a weird bug. I cant stand that the phone gives me a issue as i got this phone for streaming. Its a decent phone with a few bugs, the camera is fantastic. But the bugs should not exist on the 8th version of the phone. Google should do much better.
I still don't understand how or why these phone brands don't spend more money on the audio side. It's inconceivable that a phone around 1000$ does not give an excellent sound experience
They've put all the efforts into Bluetooth and a wireless experience. They ignore all the users who prefer a wired experience. A lot of users don't want to use a separate device like a DAP when they could use a phone and stay connected with daily life and the music.
@@TheHonestAudiophile There are devices out there that will circumvent that issue. I have been using a pixel for years and I did notice that the wired dongle seemed problematic but I own a BTR5 and it works like a charm and I can still use wired IEM or headphones. I know this doesn't address your needs so it's a moot point in your case
BTR5 is bluetooth and I don't use Bluetooth devices as mentioned in the video. I have tested and used the BTR products in the past and they work fine but a wired connection sounds better in my opinion. Plus,. the BTR5 and similar products don't work with my USB microphones.
Yes...I think I am still happy with my venerable Galaxy S10+. Phone jack, expandable memory, and LDAC with the DEV mode enabled. Call me crazy...but as long as the thing works...I ain't fixing it! I changed the battery (with new rear cover) once over the last three years (30 minute job, myself) and keep it at 85% max charge with the new battery. The screen has been protected and I've always kept it in a case...no dings or damages whatsoever. I wonder if I will reach a point where I decide to change out the battery one more time. I know...stuck on Android 12. Boo hoo. Doesn't matter to me. I will eek out its use until the cows come home. PS: I use a magnetic coupler (power + data) on the USB-C connection to avoid failure of that port due to cycling with cable connections, over time. Seems to have been an effective strategy...and damn convenient too. I also charge through this USB-C coupler, instead of using the wireless charger, to reduce heat buildup to the back of the phone during wireless charging. I invested in magnetic coupled cables in the car, at the office, etc. I always have one lying around for quick connects.
Bummer. Usually, you have 30 days to return a phone. Was that an optiion? If not, that's a lot of money lost (I'm sure you already know that). As you know, I'm an Apple fan and boy, I ever glad they finally went to USB-C with the 15 series. Sorry you had so much trouble.
Depends on the plan, service provider and if phone is paid in full or not. Anyway, I wanted to give the phone as much time as possible to work out the bugs. Finally I had to move on as it was obvious nothing was improving.
You're a lot more patient than I am. Welcome to the Samsung Galaxy family. Google pixels have always had weird quirks and that's why I'm staying away from them now.
Men i been hating my pixel 8 it freezes always , I don't even accept my dongles, for a flagship experience is the worst , i really prefer going back to my one plus 7 pro , ot sad that this new generation of phone suck that much and cost too mush
I have a Pixel 7 and my 3 dongles dac function but have static or buzz noise, when the music play can mask the noise but when music go down or finish I can hear again, is annoying listening in my Pixel 7, I use my Samsung 10e to listen the music… I have to carry 2 device 😞
That’s right, but thanks God I stay with my s10e because is not pleasant listen music on the Pixel 7. I have to wait for the next upgrade to use only one device :/
Samsung is just a total all rounder. It may be a bit lack luster in some areas when compared to the pixel and the iPhone but it just does a great in every single area. Samsung is the best, overall.
From the moment I received the Samsung, it's superior in every way to the Pixel. I loved the Pixel 8 Pro but it's not as good as the S24 Ultra. USB, camera, UI, speed, display, connectivity, S-Pen, everything is better. The S24 Ultra takes me back to my favorite phones of all time, the Note. I'm a happy phone user again and a very gleeful content creator.
@@TheHonestAudiophile wow, better in terms of camera and UI too? That's awesome! I'm gonna get that one after a few months when the prices drop a bit. Even more excited now, after knowing your experience. Thanks and all the best for your upcoming content with that phone!
As mentioned in the video, the S24 doesn't have 3.5mm jack like most modern phones. I got it because of the USB issues I was experiencing with the Google Pixel. I need a functional USB output so I can test dongles and connect my USB microphone.

Brands I prefer are Worlds Best Cables and Cable Matters.
@@TheHonestAudiophile thank u sir ❤️
My pleasure, you're welcome
its very frustrating the Pixle 8 pro.
GM ☕️❄️
It’s sad that I saw this video too late.
No doubt. Wow.
Yes Sir Samsung S24 is awesome and much better than the other phones.
I totally agree 💯
I am sure Google Gemini has the answer to your question as to why Google hates audiophiles.
my pixel 7 pro works great with my moondrop dawn pro thank God 🥰
Strange, and after the whole "Android 14 will get lossless audio on the USB"
Well,at least Google doesn't sell here😐
I still don't understand how or why these phone brands don't spend more money on the audio side.
@@TheHonestAudiophile right sir
@@TheHonestAudiophile it's a shame that LG is no longer in the phone industry
My wife is just now swapping out her S10 for a S24 Ultra. She loved it! I agree it is a solid performing phone. Gotta stick with what works.
I just got mine, I absolutely hate the audio on this phone.
Ahora que tiene yuki,¿Podria darme un porcentaje de que tanto detalle ganan vs doongle como moondrop dawn hidizs s9 pro plus hiby fc4?
Yuki review coming in a few weeks.
Could be worse …you could be an Apple user 😵💫
No thanks
Apple dongle is likely the best value in all of audio though
Let's agree to disagree
At least my iPhone works with all my dongles.
Yep. I upgraded to Samsung S24 Ultra and love it, no issues.
The Pixel way: "great phone except x doesn't work".
can you recommend me a headphone under $100 and $200 for editing and other productive work, i was thinking about sony WH-1000xm4
I don't recommend using a bluetooth headphone for editing and production work. Check out the Sennheiser HD280 Pro, Rode NTH-100, Audio-Technica M50x
We can fun with this in many ways… now google is not only censoring free speech, they are censoring your dongles. 😂
my $60 amazon fire8 tablet works better than that phone 😅
Oof
I have a Pixel 7 and my 3 dongles dac function but have static or buzz noise, when the music play can mask the noise but when music go down or finish I can hear again, is annoying listening in my Pixel 7, I use my Samsung 10e to listen the music… I have to carry 2 device 😞
Id rather just have one device that works properly like the S24 Ultra.
Hope you enjoy as much as I do.
LGv30 says U wanted U get it😂
I prefer to use phones that are current and being updated/supported. I will stick with the Samsung S24 Ultra.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Nice does it have good quality DAC amp and 4.4 or 3.5 this updated phone ?
As mentioned in the video, the S24 doesn't have 3.5mm jack like most modern phones.
I got it because of the USB issues I was experiencing with the Google Pixel. I need a functional USB output so I can test dongles and connect my USB microphone.
@@TheHonestAudiophile yeah I know ,it was a joke about the new phones having less capabilities
Try Devialet Gemini, and you never use a wire again.
Here is how the current culture sees what you claim.
You have no proof Google hates audiophiles. You are a conspiracy theorist.
You ever hear of a click-bait title? Plus I do mention why Google isn't on the best side of audiophiles with the USB issue in my opinion.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@TheHonestAudiophile it is all good. I like your channel. It is a break from the culture mess going on. Plus I buy lots of audiophile stuff. Comedy needs to return in a bad way though. :)
@Temperature980 Yes indeed. Laughter is good for the soul.
The Pixel 8 Pro is a garbage phone. I've had similar microphone issues. Plus it has a well-known issue that the fingerprint reader doesn't work among other problems.
I didn't have too many complaints. But the USB C issue was a major issue for me.
@@TheHonestAudiophile This is my third Pixel phone, I cannot believe how awful it is. Now the call quality seems to be degrading. Google knows about the fingerprint reader issue and they have not helped. It was a problem with the 7 as well. I'm definitely going to check out the Samsung S24.
I've had the same issue as you with the low sound with my Rode PodMic USB and also major problems with interference with the Rode Wireless Pro causing crackling noises in recordings. Rode gave great customer support and claimed that the problem is with my phone. They sent me a new mic setup and I still have the same problem.
@QuantumMango Rode is great with customer service. Sadly Google phones just not content creator material.
Thanks for the info.
I lost my DAC amp yesterday! 🫨
Bummer
LG V30, LG V60, etc. for music !!💪💪💪💪
I prefer to use phones that aren't discontinued and that are still supported
Le son de la musique sur mon Pixel 8 pro est VRAIMENT mauvais ! Il griche, monte et baisse et on dirait que la musique joue sous l'eau. ( With music Apps)
Mais sur TH-cam, le son est meilleur.
J'ai réussi à améliorer un peu le son. Mais je préfère LG V.
