My grandparents lived on the NF&W right of way as it passed through Sardinia, Ohio on its way to Cincinnati. I could hear the dual engine coal trains a mile away, before they made the turn to come thundering through the town. I would run up the street and stand close to the tracks and wait for the engines to come into view. As they got closer, I would back up foot by foot until I was 30+ feet away from the rails. When the 100 hopper cars (I always counted them) loaded with coal rolled by; the ground would visibly shake. It was quite a thrill for a 10-year-old boy. Thanks for the memories.
WOW! Another great video Al of a fantastic model railroad. Thank you so much for bringing these artistic show pieces to our viewing pleasure. You do a great job on the videos. Really enjoyed listening to Jim Brewer explain the history of the railroad within the area. Jim is a true craftsman with all the structural builds and we appreciate his time in sharing his masterpiece. It’s awesome that he knows so many talented people that shared in his passion to build such a beautiful showpiece. Very impressive, I am awestruck. The trees are killer! Thanks again Al and Jim for sharing!
I’ve seen the layout in magazines before and it’s magnificent! I’m from that area of Virginia. About 40 minutes I think from Front Royal and my friends and I rode our bikes not far from the AvTex plant before completely done away with.
Holly molly😅, 1 extremely hue spread. Absolutely well planned all over, crisply detailed. This was obviously a long term project like, Howards spread. Superb in its own right, the sheer size of everything everywhere. One question i hope to see answered in next part: the time to cover distance over whole layout by a train😂.
Magnificent catches of the model trains coming by and pass, i, i like it 5 stars, keep up the great work, my friend, you earned a new subscriber, Greetings from Portugal to the USA.
It’s hard to imagine the size of this layout. 3300 square feet is it 33x100 or 41x80? Is there a track plan? This is amazing Al. Just the number of trees I saw was mind blowing and this huge layout is super detailed.
I had a house out near Front Royal. By then, American Viscose had become Avtex Fibers and the stench from that place was God-awful. I have been told that in the era Jim is modeling, employees could not leave the buildings during their shift and had to walk the facility through underground tunnels because of the toxicity of the emissions. EPA shut Avtek down in the late 80's due to pollution and it became a Superfund site.
He is part of mainline hobbies blue ridge PA layout open houses once a year .They do this yearly every September . The layout is in Maryland. I have no info on open ops sessions.

Amen, sad to see the Peavine reduced to a dead end branchline but at least most of it is still getting used. I was down that way a couple months ago.
Just incredible- it makes my layout look like a tiny one.
Truly amazing, especially when this is one individual's layout.
That's about the size of my house.
That is stunning. I wish I had a basement.

Great share. I really like the depth and dimension of cuts, fills and bridges.

They were moved into a corner

Wow!!! The size & level of detail are amazing. How often does Jim have open houses or operating sessions? Can you provide an approximate location?
