I’ve worked for trainers while being their assistant who not only had me attempt to overpower and not allow the horse to say no, but also would not allow myself to say no, which has now resulted in myself having ptsd in certain situations. I am glad I have found you and your program and will be patient to get signed up! I need this not only for my horses but mainly for myself even!

This is amazing. As a BCBA who specializes in trauma - I appreciate this sooo much.

I didn't realize Levine had done a follow up book, The Unspoken Voice, in 2010. Although people in the therapy world raved about his first book, Waking the Tiger, I was a bit turned off by it, since his work then revolved very much around single incident PTSD, i.e., auto accidents, rape, etc. Because of the terrible toll repeated, long deployments have had on our military, much more is known about the effects of PTSD from long term and/or repeated exposure to trauma. This is also the kind of PTSD of those who experience long term abuse as children, or at the hands of a partner. It's sad that we need experts deeply educated in the multiple ways trauma and PTSD can occur and become manifest. There is a concombinant body of work on the role of emotional intelligence in learning and how when the amygdala is hijacked, i.e., over threshold, no learning can occur. I'm glad you have incorporated so much of this into your work, since you have an audience. Good on ya.

Thank you Kerry! Do you have any recommendations for reading up on the role of emotional intelligence in learning & how going over threshold impedes learning? Would love to look into that more... Long term trauma vs single incident is really interesting too. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge ! I'm a dog groomer who shifted my work methods to no restrain / no fear exactly to prevent trauma. Forcing animals, containing them in our houses, small yard, small enclosure, tighly restraining them with leads and collars/halters/loops... has HUGE impacts on them. Moreover, in the grooming world trauma is NOT taken seriously enough :( I'm so glad more and more people like you spread the good words about free training and positive reinforcement !!!

Thanks for the video. It helped me discover an issue with a young horse I just purchased that freezes when haltered and close refuses to respond to my cues to move her feet. I’m looking for a TH-cam video to demonstrate how to deal with the situation. She seems to respond appropriately when she is 10 pr more feet away so I’m planning on starting there then moving closer as she givers proper responses. Comments are welcome.

This was such an insightful and eye-opening video! Thank you so much. As someone who struggles with PTSD, the explanation of the way that trauma is created was incredibly helpful for my own process and journey to healing, as well as helping me to understand what happens with the sweet mare that I work with who has been in abusive situations previously. I often see her becoming overstimulated and getting into that heightened state of arousal. . . So great to be able to identify that and from here forward help her avoid that, or give her the space to release it. You are an inspiration and I am grateful to all of this amazing information that you're putting out.

Here's my thoughts. I start with the premise that your past results immediately convey credibility. Now onto your method. I find it intriguing. I'm working with a very tough colt now and it's easy to lose patience and make it about imposing my will on the horse. Your approach is quite the opposite. That's just fascinating.
It's clear you put enormous thought into your approach.

    • @MustangMaddy
      @MustangMaddy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you so much for these kind words Michael! I so understand with what you expressed about the tough colt you're working with. Thank you for being open to my approach :D

    • @mp3michael

I need more time to let your method sink into my head. It's a far more intuitive and emotional approach than say Clinton Anderson (who i learned from by watching his videos when I knew nothing). I'll admit I've seen others who are very emotional and I'm highly skeptical.
I'm going to go train a young filly for this event right now: facebook.com/events/572797543129184/
And I'm going to try and allow her to "renegotiate" because otherwise I create a battle and then she goes redline and then I have to go way back and find a re/starting point and build from that.

Thank you for this valuable information. I've heard about "flight or fight" but I didn't understand "freeze". Very powerful to understand how feeling trapped leads to trauma.

Maddy, Wednesday is my new favorite day! Thank you so much for providing such clear, intelligent explanations backed by the literature and honoring the horse. Some of my mustang's trauma was caused by me not knowing well enough as a new adopter, so part of the process of unraveling and rehabilitating includes forgiving myself for that so we can both move forward. Compassion, right? Thanks again.

THIS is what I needed to know when I started working with rescue donkeys from the kill pen!
I currently have an extremely halter shy donkey I’m working with and this makes so much sense!
Thanks for the insightful episode this week

Also, on a relatively unrelated side note, I was really excited to see Horse Follow Closely on your bookshelf ❤️❤️ it's been a favorite book of mine for many many years 🙌🙌🙌

Thank you Maddy for this info. I have a sensitive, reactive mare, so now I can better understand what is going on in her head during these moments. She can be very challenging for me at times.

Hi Maddy! I tried to meet you at the Pomona Horse Expo on Friday but one of your horses had a colic (that's what a lady told us), so we missed you. My question is: How do you teach an untouched mustang to yield to pressure from a halter/lead rope using positive reinforcement? I have been using your techniques with great success in a small pasture but have to move to a new barn. So I will have to lead him 100 yards outside of this little pasture and load him into a trailer. In the past he has spooked and bolted when I tried to lead him through the gate. Any advice is highly appreciated! Thank you!!!

Hey I would love it if some of you guys responded and helped me please don't be mean to me about this. I've been boarded at this stable for two years and always went by how they train horses now that I've gotten older and realized how bad it is and how I lost a lot of trust with my horse. They pretty much do the if you don't listen I'm gonna smack u so I would do that because they told me that's how you train. At the time I knew NOTHING about horses or anything so of course I believed them. I was watching one of their grandkids working with their horse and it made me so disgusted and I started to cry the horse was so so scared of her. I never want to have him be that scared of me.. I've been doing everything different I'm just worried he'll never forgive me :( and never trust me again. I feel so so so so so terrible I want to gain trust back and have him be able to trust me. Will he ever be able to forgive me? What do I do.. ? How do I fix our relationship? He's super pushy though with treats, your horses are very good with waiting for them not begging.
