You pretty much crafted most of my personality, I'm now obsessed with mythology and folklore from any culture I can find, I still use the Kuji-in in times of hardship. And you probably don't remember, but right when Logan Paul was all over the news and Japan stopped trusting Americans, I was writing a story about a group of people in the Sengoku era, and I was scared that even if I put it out there, Japan would hate it because it came from an American. I debated for days whether or not I should ask you (who sculpted my personality and most of the story) for help, and you responded the same day I sent it, and you were pretty offhanded and casual about telling me it's okay, I was smiling ear to ear the whole day. And like I said, you inspired a lot of the story, it was originally just a random character I had, who sat outside a sword academy for a month to get in, and has trick swords, but after your Samurai Jack video I reinvented him into a ronin. Your video about Sengoku Choujuu Giga, gave me the best time period, and your Which Ninja about Shredder from TMNT, not only helped give personality and backstory to the ninja character, but also helped me with the problem of them all being dudes. This has nothing to do with the story but I just wanted to say my sister and I had the longest laugh about the dragon that will take a dump in your chimney, I still can't believe that's a thing. You have touched me in ways you can't even fathom, and continue to do so to this day. Thank you for your passion and reinvention.

I may enjoy gaming channels, but channels like you and Game Theory are the ones I’ll support to the end. Whatever the future holds, keep being this kind of teacher, the world doesn’t have many of you left.

You have changed my freaking life in the span of only a few years. I owe the drive I have to learn and pursue my passion for animals to you, because I never would have wanted to learn anything more than I had to. I owe my future to you and your videos, Gaijin. Dear Gaijin,
I'm studying to become a cultural anthropologist. I was recently approached by one of my professors to participate in a field school in Japan. I am most likely going to be doing research on how Gaijin cultures is affecting Japan and vice versa. Granted, the date will not really see the light of day, but this just the first step. So, I am really trying to say is, thank you! It is because of you and your channel that really inspired me to become an anthropologist in the first place and help facilitate helping people in that way! Because of you I absolutely fell in love with Japanese language and culture, and hopefully become a JET too!
Thank you for your time and your amazing content!
    Sincerely, your fan

But without your insight I don't think I'd like it so much or be as interested in the world as I am. I love your videos so much, and you have opened my eyes to a world I wouldn't have seen without your channel. "Let's all sing together Gegege no Ge! let's all sing together gegege no ge. Hey mate, your content is fantastic! And thank you for talking to us about a deeper level of your experience and creation.
As a small creator sharing my passion of Hospitality, Food and Travel, and also an amateur writer, I needed to hear this.
That even someone as amazing and popular as you have those thoughts about your creative content that it might not be good enough or you might have to "sell out" just to get popular.
I have had these thoughts, and its so hard to get noticed and popular, and I have also gone through these pains and thoughts before.
In the end, I now write and create small things just for me and if anyone else reads it or loves it, then thats a fantastic bonus.
Never stop creating because we all love your content!
Thank you for being so honest and teaching/entertaining us all constantly!

Hey Gaijin I was wondering if you would ever do any cultural analyzing videos on Avatar: The Last Airbender. Specifically I would like to see a video on the Sun Warriors that appear in the episode “The Firebending Masters” (S3, E13) who clearly take some influence from Mesoamerican culture in their design. Love your vids btw.

Gaijin Goombah... I am glad you are still here. I started learning Japanese for my trip to Tokyo... I went to Tokyo for the vacation and anime. Half way through my trip I fell head over heals with the culture. So I plan to visit remote parts of Japan on my next visit. I feel your channel helps bring understanding to this new found culture I want to learn more and more about. I enjoy hearing the legend, lore, and sometimes silly experience stories... so keep them coming. I had no idea Japan would change my focus like it did. I still like anime, but I have a new understanding of it now.

I've watched several videos of yours, and always come away with your infectious love of culture.
I haven't watched this anime yet (but OMG I NEED TO! I don't know why I keep putting it off! ) but i think it was awesome to see how even though they were taking shots at social media culture, they also seemed to make clear that the platforms on which people find fame are merely nothing but a tool. Like using a knife, depending on your skill, talent, and drive can make the difference between making a delicious chicken dinner and brutally butchering your neighbor. Sure TH-cam can bring some horrible people to the spotlight, but a lot of good has come from small channels allowed to express their passions.
Thanks so much for sharing your story this episode brought to mind! It seems you've helped a lot of people struggling with similar experiences, me included!

Its not just content creators, but anyone else that wants to take their passion to the next level. Or trying to find themselves in hard times.
I used to be in a possessed fervor into getting a food concept off the ground by getting in way over my head with the financials. It was so bad that i would forego all the things that made me sane just to get the project that much closer to getting funding. That crashed due to the reality of my situation (lack of all the necessary basic logistics and funds) and i ended up reinventing myself by selling meat and seafood for a grocery store that which is what i am passionate about.
This isnt just a TH-cam analogy, it is all about what happens with goals and dreams in life. So you are not alone, i also teared up a bit because that message resonated with me too

I write fan fiction and even then this hits hard. I was late to the SU high because I was homeless for a massive chunk of that run and dealing with a bunch of other stuff and while I am still receiving praise for both my niche and more general works, I know deep down that I need to consider expanding subject matter to keep entertaining people. Problem is that I struggle to fall in love with new things. With the exception of SU, literally all of my interests are ones that I have had since I was a little kid. Sure most of them are still alive and getting new content in the forms of shows, movies, games and merchandise, but they aren’t new or trendy. I just don’t latch onto new interests like most people do and I know that will eventually bite me in the butt.
Still at the same time, I love what I write and even now have a bunch of projects in the works and coming up with more everyday. So long as one person enjoys it, then that’s enough for me because I didn’t expect to have even one person to enjoy anything of mine.
You know what? I have wanted to make a TH-cam show for years and just lack the proper tools and confidence, but why should I let that stop me? If it doesn’t get big, then why should it matter? I get to have fun and do research and I love research. That’s why I love this channel after all.
Thanks for this and sorry for rambling on.

The Very first Gaijin Goombah video i ever watched was the Okami Game Exchange video from 2013, I watched the video Months after its initial release because at the time i had only just discovered the Game Theorist Channel and i was very reluctant to new things, but i was Familiar with Okami because i had played it in the past, and after i watched that video i was absolutely HOOKED! After i watched the entire Okami set of videos i was left wanting to learn more! Goombah those videos have helped change me into a person that is more open to change, willing to learn about the world around me, and helped me realize that i am a pretty ignorant person but through that ignorance i wish to become more informed. Thank you for that

okay, i clicked on this video because it looked really interesting, and it really was. it got me thinking a lot about youtube and the effects it has. but what really intrgued me was your ending and how you explained the process you went through to get where you are and what you cover.
i saw that and thought 'this sounds ALOT like something i would really enjoy watching and would find interesting.' because i LOVE anime but i also LOVE doing research and learning knew things. especially mythology and the origins of things. so this channel seemed right up my alley and i was considering subscribing right there.
so i watched some more of your videos and i loved them. so much research was has gone into them but they were easily to digest and take away from. the more i watched the more i liked it and wanted to see more.
it was yours and joey's 'My Hero Academia's Greatest Lesson!' that finally pushed me to click subscribe. one, it's one of my favorite new anime, but you talked so much about and in such depth about it's messages. you talked alot about what risk and reward can mean, how it was depicted and what it could mean for japan. i thought that was so cool and i think the series depicts it perfectly. the series shows not only what taking risks could mean for japan, but also what the creator went through and the risks he took when he became manga creator.
his first two series were cut pretty early and it really devastated him. he was thinking of giving it up but he took another risk and tried once more and created my hero.
granted i've only seen like 5-6 videos from your channel so far but i really do think you channel is something i want to follow.
any way i just wanted to let you know... for some reason.

Guess I can be happy that I don't care about popularity at all, as long as I'm having fun. ^w^
Too often have I seen TH-camrs, who grew popular with (for example..) Five Nights at Freddy's, only to get stuck in that genre to the point where they didn't even really seem to enjoy it anymore. They kept going just for the relevancy and popularity, but in turn they lost what mattered most to them. If the youtubers is enjoying himself/herself with whatever they are doing, the fans will find their way. Perhaps not as fast as one would like, but the moment you start doing things that don't fit you at all... people will notice it in your content.

I will say I am VERY glad you have expanded your cultural analysis powers to anime, although I will say this: whether intentional or not, when you talk about anime, it is usually newer releases. This is fine, as I love hearing your passion for gegege no kitaro even if it's not my kind of show, or many others like one piece. But I do feel there were some cultural gems of yesteryear that have been overlooked.
I've personally said on like, half your kitaro videos about my love of jigoku shoujo. But I'm also talking shows such as last years ancient magus bride. And I know there are even more awesome shows with awesome culture behind them. I just fear some may get lost to time.
I cant speak for all your fanbase, but believe me when I say I would love you to also talk about some older shows, assuming you find something worth talking about.
Reguardless of if you choose to or not, I will always choose to be your student. Thank you for being such a great teacher.

I absolutely love this video. The steps/stages you described in the video are very much applicable to many different aspects of life.
I am a chef and got caught up in a fervor on getting a concept off the ground while i was still in culinary school right after i found what i wanted to do, so i immediately started to get my project ready to receive funding (stage 1). I was so absorbed into this concept that i skipped out on the things that made me happy, like fishing which is what kindled this passion to begin with, just to make a tiny bit of progress on being able to get funding for it (stage 2). No matter how much time i spent on getting the info and data i needed to make this project as air tight as possible, it was never enough and i could not keep up (stage 3) It came crashing down by the reality of what i was attempting by going over my head in this attempt, so i took a few weeks to just relax and regroup myself (stage 4). Now im working at a grocery store selling and cutting meat and seafood as a part of my passion for food especially since it was meat and seafood that got me into cooking to begin with (stage 5)
Edit: stages and how they applied to my situation. It just shows that this rings true for probably everyone who has a living somewhat based in creativity or some other kind of mindset.

I may be a bit egocentric talking about my country again, but I like to share culture with others. I would like to see a show with a similar formula, using Polish folk creatures. There is so much plot potencial. Imagine an episode:
Act 1: The episode starts in a School. The characters are preparing a rehersal for a show. The show is suppoesed to be tomorrow night. One of the characters is established to have a stage fright. He wants to talk to others, but doesn't want to bother them. We have a small comedic scene, then, the rehersal begeins. while Others play their roles, The focus character is shown shaking, And saying
"I can't do it!". His turn comes and he is forced to enter the stage. He has a panic attack and runs away. The next scene the Focus character is shown wandering in a forest saying to himself: "Why couldn't I be more brave? I wish I had told them!". You see, the theme of the episode is "Talking about your problems." Witch is a problem in Poland, But i'm sure it is in America as well. The episode should portray a small problem, like stage fright, but could also represent depresion or abuse. It is a very important lesson. The camera makes wide, panoramic shots to hammer in the idea of loneliness and solitude as the music consists of high bell sounds, and a low-pitch backround cello. Mostly sad stuff. An important thing to note is a sign in the backround saying "WARNING: abandoned Mine!". Why is it important? Because when the character is walking in a very landmark place, the ground suddenly collapses.
Act 2: The character wakes up in a cave, but soon realises it's a mine, (big suprise!) takes a flashlight from his backpack and turns it on. the light shined on the stone walls and our Hero of The Episode begins to explore. There is no music in the backround, only sound effects. after a few seconds he discovers white objects on the ground. After inspecting them, he realizes what it is and informs the audience by exclaming "Rock salt! Is this a Salt Mine, then?". Soon he finds more and more salt crystals on the walls and that's where the music kicks in. Building tension and anticipation.
The character hears a grumble deep in the cave and he notices that he can he can hear a cry for help from the dark. Our hero-for-the-episode runs to help the stranger, finding a miner in a damaged uniform trapped under a big rock. The miner cries for help: "Please! Save me!" "What happened here?!" asks the character "They sent me on a safety patrol! The...the rocks...Fell down!" and the Focus character easily lifts up the stone. The character notes that "It should be harder to lift". The Miner crawls out and stands up. The Focus Character asks: "Wait. Isn't this supposed to be an ABANDONED mine?" and to that the stranger cackles, then, starts to glow and a bright, white, glowing silhouette appears before him. He stands face-to-face with The Treasurer.
So... The Treasurer is an old cave spirit that looks like an old man with a long, white beard smoking a pipe. Basicly Gandalf without a hat. Normaly wearing long, white robes. Somtimes he turns into a form of an old miner to talk to other miners. There was a tradicion among the Polish miners to leave some of their food to please him. And you wouldn't want to piss him off! Not that he was a mean guy, no. You see, mines were not a safe place back in the day. Walls could collapse, and the light often died out leaving the poor miners to get lost in the maze of corridors. That's where The Treasurer came into the picture. If you were a good, hard working person, You had nothing to fear. You should have even been trusting him, for then you wouldn't die. But if you did something bad, then you better fix it and fast, for you will meet with him, no matter how carefull you are. And he will lead you to your death in the darkness or under the stones. If you are carefull enough, you won't die, but it doesn't mean that you're safe. There was a legend about a guy who got cursed by The Treasurer to never find any coal, And he sure didn't. Until he fixed his mistake.
Treasurers animation is smooth. Really smooth, more than any other character. It's so smooth in fact that it becomes uncany in how diffrent it is. We get a comedic scene where the Focus character stands in shock and the spirit tries (and fails) to explain who he is... and to calm down our hero, so thet he doesn't scream his lungs out. Then, The following dialog starts to take place:
The Treasurer starts with saying that *"the protagonist has shown a good heart"* and that he will show him the way out of the mine. The Focus character asks who The Treasurer exacly is, and the spirit finaly explains what I wrote above. So the protagonists asks "Are you going to let me go? Just like that? No trials? No riddles?" and The Treasurer replies *"Yes"* and sighs sadly. The protagonist asks if there is something wrong. The Treasurer says *"Oh, nothing. I have to let you go, that's all. See, There is no one in the mines anymore. Sure some are working in these rare ones, But most people just sit behind machines! I...I just wish Humans appreciated Hard work again. With their own hands..."* There is a moment of scilence as the music brings out a sad melody *"...They Die less now, but...I don't think They appreciate how easy they have it... Now, come with me!"* He turns around and starts walking. The protagonist runs after him and Yells "Oh, Great! I Hope they haven't finished the rehersal without me! Oh, wait. That's not a good thing..." To witch The Treasurer replies *"Oh! A rehersal! I heven't seen one of those in a long time...! Why isn't this a good thing, anyway?"*
"Well... i don't like to preform in front of people...and I feel alone in this" *"Oh, I understand. Have You told anybody? "* "No." *"Then how anybody help you? "* "They can't" *" Well you told me about it. That is the first step.I can still help you with that!"* "Really?" *"Yes, but remember. It's the hard work that makes it worth. By the way...Can you show me the surface? I would like to see it."* "I sure can!"
We get a montage of The Treasurer helping the protaginist overcome his fear in various ways. And the protagonist showing The Treasurer around The earth. The Treasurer is walking around in his Miner form and being a nice, curious grandpa to workers on earth. The montage ends with both of them Underneath a tree. They talk about the protagonist feeling much better about the show this night. The Treasurer comments this with *"this is good. You DID work hard."* The scene ends, when the Focus character says "I'm just not sure yet" And the camera cuts.
Act 3: Scene begeins behind the curtain Just before the show. The Focus Character Is again, shown shaking, but this time he has a flashback. He Hears the words of The Treasurer *"Have You told anybody? Then how anybody help you?"* And he decides to tell. He calls a member of the main cast and admits to his fear. soon others join, give him tips and cheer him up. And that complets His character arc for the episode. An epic music starts playing as our protagonist goes to the stage and plays his role. The music stops as he enters, and is replaced with the sound of loud heartbeat in the backround. Then he starts to recite his part. And we can hear every word of the role. Every rhyme. As he finishes the audience begeins to cheer. the protagonist smiles and we get a shot showing An old miner in an damaged uniform. Smiling back at him. The episode ends.
    So yeah....It would be cool.

It’s moments like this that really calls out to me and how I want to be as a person. I’m totally the first yokai who just ups and leaves when he sees they fell off track. He would rather give up his fame just to do what he loves and not eventually hate it instead of fall into that pit. I’m kinda like that, too. I don’t think I’ll ever be famous or popular for doing what I love, but I’d rather keep doing what I love because that is what makes me happy, no matter how hum-drum or small scale it is.
And yet, that’s also why I super support people like you who CAN love their work and be super successful at it. Sure, I’m envious at times, but all in all you are able to pursue your passions and I wanna help those that strive hard for it. Even if it just means watching a vid or pressing a button.

In a way the three Yokai represents the three bad parts of TH-cam as well .one got upset and hated what there life has become so they step down from the platform. another is what happens when a TH-camr sees that they are going no where and takes out there anger on the views and then by them doing that they lose the little bit of viewers that liked them.and of course in a way the (hag) yokai is the hype beast (Paul brothers) the one every one loves to watch while others see right through the smug grin , big house and. 24/7 hyped mood
No I am not saying that the yokai ARE the bad parts of the platform or that I am trying to take away from this AMAZING episode of culture shock I just thought that this realization should be shared even if it might be wrong

And I SERIOUSLY doubt I'm the only one that feels this way. No matter what you do, even when you DO eventually stop and say "goodbye" to everyone on the platform, you'll definitely have left your mark. For some people it'll be those who learned, but it'll also be those you Inspired to create as well.
So keep on making great content, and know that when you eventually decide to hang up your pixelated katana for good, it'll leave a lasting mark.

I really won't understand the extreme judgmental viewers who reprimand content creators who consistently make the same type of videos that they subscribed for. Yeah, it doesn't sound as crazy when I say it, but that's bluntly the reason why most people subscribed to your channel and I say, shame on you if you think these youtubers HAVE to create brand new concepts for your entertainment. It's ironic when the general public understands the corruption of corporate industry, but then becomes the corporate industry in community based entertainment platforms. Always demanding new ideas, restricting creators and holding the gun against them. TH-cam should and hopefully will always be a place to share people's personal interests and hobbies as a community of people with mutual interests.

    • @Chaos89P
      @Chaos89P 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I think that's what TH-cam was supposed to be in the first place, to be what you said it should be. I'm wondering right now if Google's acquisition of the site might've pushed the platform in the wrong direction?

    • @yeetoban
      @yeetoban 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Chaos89P Possible. Maybe some sort of spark that led TH-cam to inherently become more and more corporate, trying to become an independent entertainment platform like cable or satellite TV, but with public creators, which is kind of a scam to me. I mean, sure youtubers gain some income from TH-cam RED and Premium but remember, TH-cam itself still isn't an actual production company and probably doesn't even have the rights or means to properly pay content creators the income they deserve.

    • @ZombieBarioth
      @ZombieBarioth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Definitely agree about TH-cam's influence, they seem to be taking advantage of the public nature of the platform to create a service similar to Netflix or Hulu.
But as far as the community itself goes I think a lot of it just seems from human nature. It's not just TH-cam either, the gaming community is the same way.
People latch into the idea that they're the customer, and they put money in their pocket, so they call the shots. They also tend to misunderstand, misuse, and even abuse the phrase "the customer is always right".
Thought in fairness, the much more personal interaction and communication with the medium and the creators does a lot to bolster a sense of ownership. You don't get this sort of input with traditional media.

  • @Merdragoon
    @Merdragoon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

It's really surprising how realistic that episode of the anime got of the TH-cam culture. I had noticed my my interests in TH-camrs dwindled to nothing at times, some of the youtubers that I didn't *learn* from exactly. (A huge example that I went thinking of when you were talking about the stages was GraveyardGirl, but she had yet to truly "Reinvent" herself it feels.) But subconsciously I realized you were going through the stages in a different way in the past before that, but instead of feeling of needing to unsubscribed, I got worried that I would loose one of the channels I still loved watching and learning about culture from. (Actually a lot of your videos helped me have a better understanding in building cultures for stories.) I'm happy though that those people actually rejuvenated your love of teaching others. Dude. I'll say it. Talking about the "popular" games gets boring because soon everyone knows and nobody cares. That's why, at heart, I'm a retro gamer. I look to the past for good games. Now a days I play my Overwatch, my TF2 and my Jump Force but....I will always return to my gaming roots for entertainment. PS1, original Xbox, Gameboy Advance. The stuff I grew up with. Hell, I find more enjoyment in good old Doom than I do any Halo, CoD or Rainbow Six game. Keep yer tactical cover, advanced weapons and realistic graphics. Give me pixels, demons and a big old shotgun any day.
Thing is this series has inspired me. Inspired me to look into culture. To try other games. To create. I want to do for the West what many Japanese games have done for the East. I want to put culture in games. So many ideas. So many thoughts.

This video made a lot of sense when it came to my youtube career and why I had to take time away.
When I originally started youtube back in 2011/2012 it wasn't to make money or to be popular, it was to find a fun way to deal with my depression and to allow me to have some form of communication with the outside world when my health issues prevented me from doing so.
Then as time went on I wanted to help others like me to deal with depression/ anxiety and make people smile like the people that I watch made me feel.
But during the last few years of high school the pressure to make money started to hang heavy on my shoulders. It felt like if I didn't start making money I'd have to quit doing something that helped me cope.
Once I went to collage I quit youtube for a bit, occasionally uploading new videos but mostly gave up. Then when collage back fired I felt even more lost than I did before.
Fast forward a few years and I've decided to get back into youtube, I want to make people smile, and feel like they are experiencing the games I play but I also love sharing my love for games, gaming got me through a lot and now I want to share that love with others. I'm not sure where my channel will go from here, I don't even expect to have more than 10 views per episode but as long as the people watching enjoy gaming as much as I do or learn why people love games so much then my time was not wasted.
Sorry for this long rant but this video made me feel like sharing my youtube experience as a back burner youtube channel.

I'm honestly glad you're still around, my dude, if only I'd had teachers as cool as you when I was a kid - who wouldn't want a guy who plays video games and watches anime to be their teacher?
Like many of your followers, I found you through the Game Theorists, but I'm glad to have stuck with your channel for a good long time now, through thick and thin; seeing so many others trying to share their hobbies and fascinations on TH-cam had me wanting to make videos of my own for the longest time, but I've felt like I've sat on my hands for so long that the goal has passed me by and that I'm too late to the party now that I'm 27 and the market feels flooded with the same attempts to get even a fraction of popularity, but deep down still burns that flame of simply wanting to try and entertain and share things I enjoy with others.
I've seen TH-cam change so much, but there are still content creators like yourself who I've seen grow from a handful of subscribers to tens of thousands, even millions for some of them and it makes me happy to have be along for the ride - out of the channels on my subscription list, yours is one I would recommend in a heartbeat, without a doubt; knowing you're still here and sharing your passion honestly makes me happy and I'm glad I could be one of the bricks that builds up your fanbase.
I may never have watched Gegege no Kitaro yet, but seeing it actually take current trends and pull no punches on the reality of the situation while throwing supernatural elements like Yokai into the mix is definitely one of the best ways to get their point across without beating viewers over the head with it; no wonder you talk about it so much, it's a modern day series of fables that teaches important lessons the viewers should take heed of.
My apologies for the text wall, you likely get comments such as this all the time, but I really am grateful that you still put out content and followed your dream to show the culture found in video games and anime, especially with the stories about your real life experiences of living in Japan while serving as a teacher - seeing people so passionate about something and sharing it with others makes me happy, and I hope you continue to share your passion with us for many years still to come.

Sigh, Gaijin, I love your videos, but I really don't relate to your comments about hating another Gegege No Kitaro video or being clickbaity...
    1. You always dish out what you promise in titles and on thumbnails
    2. Gegege is a great way to get to know the different yokai, so I kinda wish you'd do more so our knowledge of yokai would be bigger.
Also 3. Do you like them beans?

MORE GEGEGE NO KITARO! I really love how you are so passionate about teaching culture through videos games and anime, and I really appreciate you discussing gegege no kitaro. Not a lot of anime fans or you tubers are even talking about it and it makes me very happy to see you tackle this show with such passion. I hope to see more content from you on this show, maybe do some theories. Because I have a pretty interesting one cooking in the back of my brain.

Your channel is the biggest reason I still care about learning to this day. Trust us Gaijin, you've done so much more good in your career than you could ever imagine. Keep stoking the fire of learning for as long as you feel like it. At this point it's more like the blazing sun of learning. I wouldn't know any of what I know about cultures outside america without you. I can't thank you enough for this channel's existence

I am very happy that you never gave up on the channel then. I the cultural videos are some of my favorite on here, and have caused me to look into such things on my own time. You're channel has even helped me on somethings on college, such as inspiring a paper or project idea. Also it was the Unexpectables that really got me into trying out D&D so thank you for staying around.
