10lbs of extra torque in a Beetle is definitely noticeable!
Everytime I see those Porsches, I realize how bad I wanted one. They’re cool!

lol...well I planned on flogging the 67 in snow ( yard ) to finish the vid but couldn't bring myself to do it. The ground had softened as temps rose and it would of made a mess out of the car. So...I had ( and have plenty ) some unused footage to burn ...I'm always tinkering with something it's just never that interesting

1967 is the pinnacle of Beetle development. When the '68s came along ... it was over. In terms of aesthetics, well some of us like the even older ones which have their own quirks. That 924 is worth restoring; vastly underrated car, but it sounds like it has an engine oiling problem.

For me the best year Beetle is a 58. Oval quality, oval parts, but the familiar big window style and dash. Small windows, for me everything is right on a 58.
65 on when the windows got bigger they looked more ungainly.
I had a 67 (European as im from the UK), wasn't enamoured with it.
Also European 67's kept the sloping headlights so were prettier than the US 67's.
However if its a Bay, for me 68 1 Yr only buses are my favourites, love all the quirky 1yr only bits on them, plus if it's an early Westfalia they have several 1yr 68 only Westie bits too.

@@5150mxVW on a 58 the wings (fenders) are Oval, bonnet (hood), engine lid, engine, all oval.

No VW got it right finally in '62 , standard gas guage, dash grab handle, most important spring loaded hood hinges , full synchronized transmission ('61on). Improved rear tail lights like big improvement! I own an oval but pre '62 tail lights are so primitive & a difficult fitting assembly all together . I've assembled dozens of those lights for people they only look nice. '62 - '67 were the best fitted design , plus there are options like euro tail light lenses for safety & nice looks. My '62 is kinda like my oval but much more practical.

1967 Beetle: A transitional car. As an owner and driver of a 1967 Beetle sunroof for over 50 years, I have to say you are quite correct, it's all a matter of personal preference, just like many things in life. I had a 1965 Beetle for some years and it was also a very nice drive, but I feel the 1967 was a mostly perfected model. Yes, lots more mods and improvements 68 on up, but the 67 seemed to capture the essence, all the best and desirable elements that the Beetle surely was and would become. I had a feeling about what the 1967 might become back in 1969 and it did indeed evolve into a classic all it's own. I also had a 1978, 924 Porsche which I thought was a bit of a mistake from Porsche, but it did drive nice. I currently own three, restored, 1967 Beetles: Sedan, Sunroof and convertible. I have always felt that Beetle owners have a somewhat emotional relationship with their car as much or more than Vets, Mopars, GTO's etc. In short, I feel all the 50s and 60s era Beetles have their own special charm and appeal. Beetles evolution over the years was like watching a child grow and mature. The VW Beetle, the most popular car in history!

My dad was a huge beetle guy. Probably worked on over 50 bugs, restoring and fixing them selling 5 on a lot at a time. He was one of the best around the area. He passed away when he was just 54 and I was 13. He left me the last bug he was working on and I just looked at it from storage after almost 20 years of just sitting but wow I was surprised how good it looks. It's a 67 with the sunroof. All new white paint I believe. Trying to find out what condition it in or how much more it would cost to finish what he started. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Because of 12volt and engine, always wanted the 1967. Because I had two 65’s
also ALWAYS favored the fence numbers! Now after reconsidering, I’d definitely
go for the 1966 or 1967. Just glad that I can say that I’ve owned, driven and worked
on one of the best bugs..... from 1968 until I sold my last bug in 1977. I traded that
bug (perfect) for a like new 1971 240Z with 31,000 miles plus $1,000 boot. Both were
original and like new. Wish to Hell I had them both back!

My choice is the year '66. That's after years of deciding and collecting. My first VW Bug was a '68 and I liked it but, I wanted much earlier of a style. It's super nice to see a side by side comparison to a question I get once in a while. The most asked is the 6V vs. 12V after they've done a bit of googling research. The next question comes from me, "they want how much!?"

Great video Jason I prefer the 66 as well I had one I used for a winter beetle and my 65 was the summer car. I recall one winter 30 below zero six volt and that 66 went rrrr rrrrrr rrrrrr rattle rattle and started the heat may have not been much but it was there and all most instant out of those heater boxes. People always badmouth the old bugs for not having heat I always said if the heating system was maintained and everything was working properly like the thermostat louvers and heat channels it really wasn't that bad. 😊👍 And GTO is a nice choice the closest I ever came to one was a 67 Pontiac Tempest sprint custom with the three speed Hurst and overhead cam straight six a fairly valuable car these days. Check out (TV car show calendar) 1967 Pontiac sprint. Nice car.

Within reason could classic beetles run say 65mph & cruise - I'm looking to purchase one to use another for total reliability to go back in forth to weekend property 3 hrs away- I could take back roads but drive would be much longer stop & go through many small towns down to Chesapeake Bay area from the western Blue Ridge Mountain town where I live- Any advice on particular year or model for lot of use appreciated - Thanks, jack

Hi, both are great years, here in the UK the 67 usually had the sloping headlights and one off engine lid but as it was the cross over I've see them with upright lights and even the 70s style engine lid guess what ever was left in the VW parts bin ,but a 67 lid sloping headlights continental bumpers( towel rail) disc brakes ,1500cc karmann convertable or saloon a (close second) is my all time favourite car to own .guess there plenty of them in U S pretty hard to find them here and even harder in RH drive , forget the Bentley's lamo,s and Ferrari,s etc

I had a brand new white '67. When you'd been driving a while, and it was hot, and you stopped for a few minutes, it did not want to restart...

67 or 63 are my favorite years. the 67 front fenders are much easier to work on. I have more trouble with the earlier fenders but they look cooler.

I own a '67 VW Beetle 1300, and for various reasons I think the '67s are the best Beetles. The paintwork (Lotus White) on my Beetle is still 100% original and in excellent condition. The same applies to the interior, the engine and the gearbox. Even the original drum brakes still work well. Greetings

Given my choice I'd take the '67. To be honest I like the upright headlights and the dual master and 12V electricals are a huge plus

Well, I also choose the "66 - due to the interior mainly (and that blue is gorgeous!), though it is a close call for me because I attach more weight than you to the 12 volt system. How about one of each? Oh, yeah, you already have that!! :))

This reminds me of vintage wine..in the end, it's all about personal taste. 67s drive a bit better than 66. I own a sea blue 66 but aesthetically, my favorite year is a 62. Perfect blend with the smaller windows, cloth headliner, reliable 1192cc, synchro box, mechanical fuel gauge, Wolfsburg crest on bonnet and pope's nose lid.

    • @5150mxVW

I like how you think. My 68 Camaro started life in mid November of 67.
When people ask me what year it is, I say '67. I count when it rolled off the assembly line as the finished product.

  • @volktales7005

1966 Yes! I never liked the look of the upright '67 headlights with the early bumpers. Six volts suck, but most early cars that are actually driven a lot were given 12 volt conversions. I have a Pearl White '66 sunroof with Pigalle (red) interior. It has the best VW engine (a 1600 single port) installed, and the 12 volt conversion is soon. For a daily driver, give me a 1970 model. Mine was unstoppable. Except for the rust that killed it....

👍👌👏 Although the 6 Volt front lights are a joke, I like the 1966 also better because of the ivory colour knobs/interior. For a short while, as an interim car (stopgap/makeshift) I once owned a (jade?) green 1966? bug, that even had an ivory coloured steering wheel. And that's exactly what I miss on your blue 1966 bug. 2) The 924S can be a phoenix out of the ash. Or will you simply sell it?
Best regards, luck and especially health to all involved people.

CC where ya been? I think the 66's had the black wheel here anyway. Java Green, great color ! Not sure on the 924s, I've been selling off projects and it feels good to lighten up. Hope all is well
