- One of the nicest guys in the VW community, Rick Johnson takes time to show us this beautiful 1952 VW “Split Window“ Bug. Stunning to see in person and so much fun to ride in. Come along with me as I give you the opportunity to have a close-up view of this gem on the road. With under 27k documented miles, listen to the sounds of this classic 25hp engine and to the whine of the split case transmission as Rick shifts along while we ride shotgun. #vwbug #socal #vw #VWLifestyle #SplitBeetle #1952 #Original #Classic
Awesome car and owner. Would definitely love to see his Speedster!
Yessir. That’s the plan.
Love this car Rick. Got to see it in person last June at the RVA D'Elegance VW Show @ Old World Village 👍
I'm a 51split ager too exactly as Phil Collins
and beetles enthusiast
since 197O - Let it be
after Abbey Road 1969
BeeTLES.rock 😜✌️
@@NewBeatleJohn love it!
The industry needs to go back to this simple and works
Totally agree! It would decrease the amount of distraction.
That's a Beautiful sound. What a car!!!!
@@jimwilson2960 music to my ears
Just WOW... original miles, what an awesome piece of history... my favorite part was when he hit semaphore switch... Crotch cooling splitty from way back, beauty
@@bassdaze glad you enjoyed it so much
I like all the synthetic ivory controls on such cars ( not only Volkswagens).
The double clutching alone would be a deterant for any would be car thieves. Haha!
@@kellykonoske91 😝 so true!
hallo good morning.wow beautiful car in the whole world.very nice in the Philippines.👍🇵🇭👍🇵🇭🇵🇭👍👍
Greetings and salutations!!
Great car and video, thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it. It’s a sweet car to ride in too!
Boys and their toys. Such a joy to see this split. Thanks, Rick….. 🌴
Precioso. 👌😍 Puerto Rico. Mayagüez
Definitivamente precioso. Muchas gracias por dejar un comentario. Saludos desde California. Y saludos a todos los puertorriqueños que conozco.
What a masterpiece! Kudus to Rick!
What a treasure!
@@7728abbott exactly my thought!
Henceforth why I wanted to do a video on it. It just has to be shared.
Beautiful 😍
Very nice. I love the bugs.
Glad you enjoyed it.
I miss my 58😢
Excellent video production work!! Such a cool car! Definitely not enough split window content of this quality! Thanks so much for putting this one together!
@@MrJonniewilson thank you for taking the time to write this! It makes my day to know that the work is appreciated. 🙏
Great Video Eddy. Love the car and you always show them so well
@@Slick56 thank you so much!!
Beautiful car. I have a '51 Deluxe Hoffman Beetle myself in Los Angeles and the sound these early cars make is definitely unique and adds to the entire experience. 25hp isn't much but it's enough for these light weight cars and they don't overheat! Not enough power to overheat.
@@4wdiesels awesome! Would love to see it. eddyoc@me.com
awesome car.
I owned two. Love the VWs & love the t-shirt!✌️
Nice! Two splits?
Very cool guys. Thanks for sharing Rick. Thanks for making the video Eddy!
@@niche1740 my pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it.
Love the Vase😊
@@jerryzunich6045 me too. It’s little things like that that make those subtle differences.
"Crotch cooler": In Deutschland "Rheumaklappe". Das wurde von April 1951 bis Oktober 1952 beim Exportmodell und beim Cabrio eingebaut, nicht beim Standardmodell. Beim Mercedes Unimog gab es das damals auch.
danke für die Infos. Ich liebe Unimogs.
❤️
Thank you very much Mr. Rick Johnson, for sharing your beautiful car. And of course, thanks to you too Mr. Eddy Collins.
What surprised me the most about this car is that during the drive, my hearing noted that it didn't sound like the Beetles that we all know and have been familiar with. An interesting observation, years back I was told by a Volkswagen restorer that the beetles from the 1950s were a much more solid car and had a better build than what would come in the 1960s. Based on my hearing (again) I'd have to say that he was right. I'm not hearing even the slightest rattle in this car. Amazing!
I find myself wondering which engine this car has. Would it be an 1100 cc?
@@discerningmind so glad that you were able to hear all of the sound. With regard to the stoutness of these early cars, I believe it was definitely there more so than the later cars. Especially these transmissions. Since they did not have Synkro in them they had to definitely be stronger.
I hope he remembered to put the oil filler keeper back on.
@@hondahut good catch. I believe he did.
Notice that only the split-window had a single exhaust pipe! All Beetles that came after the split-window have two pipes.
Oh, and how do I love this video... I'm from the same year, so this was a ride back into memory-lane! Thanks so much and best regards from a Dutch petrolhead!
Das ist nicht richtig. Auch der Ovali hatte anfangs nur ein Auspuffrohr. Zwei Rohre gab es erst ab August 1955.
Love it!
Awesome bug! I had a chance to buy a 1963 Porsche 356B in 1978 for $1600. All it needed was paint (😔sigh...).
I feel your pain. I passed up on a 21 window, all original, for $750. I was 16 and didn’t pull the trigger on it.
@@EddyCollins-TZN168 oh man... if we only knew then what we know now. I did have the use of a very clean 1966 Deluxe Type 2 with the split seats up front as my high school rig, which my father took away from me and gave to my big brother- who promptly sold it for $4,000 (in 1981). More regret.
@@xopherzenitram oh man!!!!!!
My 1951 had crouch cooler vents.
@@bux49 what month was it built?
I have "rheumatism hatches" (as we call them in Finland) in my split too.
My car birthday is 18.5.1951
@ now THAT’S a name for those! 😂
In the days when cars WERE cars! A spare tyre, so you can continue your journey, if a tyre gets gets a puncture! And no apologetic "space saver " spare tyre, that only lasts 25 miles - and then you're stuck again!
Exactly! I love the simplicity! Not to mention that should something break, YOU could actually fix it.
He also double clutches
At 42000 miles, is the paintwork RESTORED, or REPAINTED?
@@nygelmiller5293 I’ll confirm but I believe just preserved, not repainted.
Actually it was in km, so 42.7 km (just 26.7k miles.)
Love your unique lateral windows, were there splited?
Thank you for commenting. What do you mean by splited?
Hi Sir. What I meen by splited windows is that that car has 2 windows on each door one small and the other biger. The beatiful car in the viedeo car has one unique on each door.
@@carizqota4565 ah yes! Okay I know what you mean now. Yes, the early models had 1 piece windows. The vent wing was not added until the Zwitter and later years.
Thanks Eddy for the information.@@EddyCollins-TZN168
how many cylinders?
@@appujosephjose6129 4 horizontally opposed.
@@EddyCollins-TZN168 Thank you
C'mon guys My 71' had oversized steel belted radials (continental) for traction AND longevity! Who uses bias-ply tires AND inner tubes?
@@markescartin6613 I hear you. Radials are definitely more comfortable. However, the guys that want to keep their cars as original as possible are nuts about period correct tires.
