    When it comes to ambitious games of the early 2000's, Shenmue immediately comes to mind. It felt like a very realised virtual world.

Plus I could listen to your voice all day. Do you do audio books? Haha. Thanks for the video, you're awesome. 3 ain't bad too. I just don't like the story or how the story is presented in 3, in game cutscenes during which you can't act yourself make it feel less immersive than the comic strips of mp1/mp2.

    • @RichardServello
      @RichardServello ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lasskinn474 1 and 2 were very visceral and cerebral narratives. 3 was a hard boiled cop story. Rockstar clearly didn’t understand the original games and decided the games were actually about a cop shooting people not a grieving father/husband accused of slaughtering his family.

    • @lasskinn474
      @lasskinn474 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RichardServello not only that but the way the story is told through the medium making you ask stuff like why couldn't i just shoot that guy as the cutscenes are almost seamless. whereas when they were comic book pages, it didn't make me feel that way, because well they were comic book pages - so they didn't feel like the player character being puppet mastered by the game at locations when it needed max to be a pussy for the sake of the story for 20 seconds only to resume being a walking single man army unit after the 20 seconds were up.
      the comic book cutscenes were cheap, but they were also good way to break the player agency for the story bits. and they didn't take 5 minutes to finish only to transition into bullettime action without a pause.

    It's interesting. I have no problem playing the most twisted, visceral, and gorey games to ever exist. I'm usually not bothered playing the villain and exercising immoral brutality to innocents for entertainment.
    Def Jam Fight for NY felt like a celebration of violence and ignorance from my community performed for the enjoyment of those far away from the consequences. I know this sounds ridiculous. For whatever reason, everyone being furious and emotionally fragile resulting in violence seemed extra stupid to me. It's a disservice to hip hop music.

    Def Jam FFNY is great because of every thing you said, but also because of the AKI engine it was built on. That games grapple, attack, taunt and special system were all built on existing code from WCW vs NWO revenge, Wresltemania 2000, No Mercy and I think another n64 game.
    Every game took steps to refine that gameplay, and wrapped it up with a sweet presentation, until the magnum opus that was FFNY. This is also why the third Def Jam game was poorly received. They changed up the entire engine and kinda started over.

    • @Vynsent
      @Vynsent  ปีที่แล้ว

      It all makes sense now, and it really is a shame they decided to go with different mechanics on the third def jam game. They had already reached perfection, only way to go was down I suppose xD

    I would not call these ambitious. Something like shadow if the Colossus would be a true ambitious game. It's a miracle how they got to run that game on a ps2. Another example would be something like black and red faction. Destructive enviroments that even to this day are not being fully realized. Also on a side note. The original plan for RE4 was very action heavy. So the team decided to take what they had there and created DMC.
