    Russ: I literally am the owner of a world class gym catered specifically to the exact wants and needs of myself.
    Also Russ every week: Let’s go to a commercial gym where the equipment is subpar and I have to smuggle in the things I’ll need to workout.

      Am pretty sure that's the point of the video as suggested by the title. If you're an elite level multiple world champion powerlifter then folk should listen to what they opine on. I've never been in a powerlifting gym but the issues Russ talks about on the bench are identical to my gym so makes me very curious!

    A gentleman donated a Rogue Fat Pad to my gym a year ago. I went from benching 245 to 300 in a single month just from having an improved bench with better stability and grip. Only a few weeks after that I managed to bench 315 for two. Of course, not all good things last. The gentleman who donated it had a falling out with the gym owner, so he eventually took back his glorious donation.

      No offense, but an advanced lifter isn't going to see a nearly 100 lb increase from using a different bench. You'd be lucky to see even 5 or 10 lbs. Your strength would've increased in a very similar pattern on any other bench setup, obviously. You're new to lifting. Those are newbie gains, my friend.

    • @molotovman2267
      @molotovman2267 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is very true. A fat pad bench is also much better for your shoulders, as they are better supported on the padding. In addition to this, tons of commercial benches are very low to the ground. You can’t get proper leg drive and can make your bench suffer,

    • @blackknight9156
      @blackknight9156 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @@rickstark85 I had been lifting for three years up to that point. The increase I saw was because I was able to do the movement more efficiently and because I trained a bench-specific program with very high frequency for an entire month. A better bench allowed me to plug holes in my technique and use some of the strength I already had (as well as building new strength) So no, they were not newbie gains. It was a result of a more efficient setup and high frequency training.

Maybe doing things that are not comfortable would make us all better. I trained at LA Fitness for years with that same bench and I couldn’t tell you the difference in bars or benches until I got into powerlifting. Now I can’t bench because my 59 year old shoulder is tweaked so now it’s either surgery or close grip. Anyway keep up the great work and keep the great content coming

    On a standard width bench I put up 225 for 8, which was admittedly pretty close to failure.
    On a fat pad at a PL gym I put up about the same, but with more left in the tank, almost a month before the standard width.
    On a commercial bench 225 x 4 is a top set...

    Biggest issue I have with random commercial gyms and the bench press isn't the bench itself. Its the brand new shiny and super spinny bars. Was warming up on 220lbs pause reps and exploding at the bottom so fast the bar just twisted and nearly cranked my wrist up.
    Worked up to 440lbs for 2 eventually and seeing peoples reactions was funny 😂

    Find were quite lucky in UK the comerical gyms are actually pretty good. They don't stock loads of equipment but the bits they have are of a good standard. The benches are mostly good. Obviously could be better but there across the board good 👍

    I always liked working out alone, but because of that I was kinda scared to bench 'heavy' and go for singles, doubles etc. I also like to use clips cuz of the sliding around of the plates. A really useful skill to teach urself is how to properly bail urself out of a failed bench. A lot of people know how to do it with squats, not with bench tho. How to bail: Just stay calm and let the bar rest below ur chest, use movementum from ur legs; sit right up and have the bar slide onto ur hips. After that it's just a matter of standing up with the bar :)

    I fucking HATE my 24 hour gym bench, but whenever I bench at home(with a much better powerlifting bench) I tend to get 1-2 reps more. I know it’s not much but to me that makes me happier lol. Especially when you got a shitty bench like me, 225 for 4 at 24 and 225 for 5-6 at home gym.

    • @benjamin3615
      @benjamin3615 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a huge difference, man. I'm so used to competition style benches that when I have to use a commercial bench, my bench goes down by several pounds because you cannot set up properly on it thanks to the dimensions it's manufactured to. If I'm like out of town and can't find a gym that has competition style equipment, I usually will take a rest day instead of going to train. If I'm at my usual gym, and my competition bench is being used by someone, I will usually wait until they're done. It's like night and day.

    I have special "pr music" that gets me hype for pr's. If it comes on when I'm not doing a pr (as my music is usually on shuffle), I'll skip it. So by the time it's pr time, I haven't heard the song in a while & it's more effective in hyping me up.
