quite worth getting one for free. Cant care if one cant see it much in flight, others can see it when you land! This video was very good and i stuck my thumbs up. I do recommend Catching a Cloud however, Its Greg's finest, over 1.5 million views!
The amount of instruments on the market doesn't make sense to me since the software is the biggest selling point beyond having a good vario. But people seem to be more willing to pay for hardware than for apps.
I bought the Omni because it is one of the cheapest all in one instruments with FLARM. Imo it's better value than the Skytraxx series, others might prefer the XCtracer. I'm still getting used to using the map in flight
HI Greg. Thanks for the valuable insights. Un-related questions: Your thoughts on the Volt5 vs Volt4? Also please comment on the AD Sock SL? Rolly, or similar to the Sock (Standard)
Hey Greg is it possible to change the audio profile on the vario? I confess that I've been turning the sound down on all the videos lately with the Omni vario, to my ear it comes across as grating
I tried a tablet but the visibility was worse, the Omni is brighter and clearer than a phone, you just have to be precise with the angle it is fixed at.
I think the thermal centring is better on the Skytraxx. The Omni has other information advantages, it suits a different purpose. There is a new bubble feature on the Omni I have to test, but there's not much to test it in right now :-)
Can you still plan itinerary when you have ended the included 1-year subscription? I was really enthusiastic for this vario, but I must admit that now that I see the glare, I'm not so sure :( Do you know if the oudie has the same glare? It's also a shame there is no button(like just to change page or zoom)
The glare is manageable, but only if you keep the fields big and high contrast. Unfortuntely this is where the UI is very disappointing, as the fields consist mostly of... margin. To get the same font size as I have in XC Track in Omni I need to creeate a field 3 times larger. You quickly ran out of any usable space. Lower the size and you won't be able to see the values at some / most angles. Also the widgets are very limited which makes it hard to get what you need without losing half the screen. Once (and if) the software catches up the screen will be less of an issue
like any other device or phone app, it calculates aparent wind, but it's limited accuracy and takes time to update, while you need to expect the wind to change close to the ground, so in general there is only as much as the instruments can help. On the other hand the widgets are quite limited and the one showing the wind direction leave a bit to desire ;)
@@kocot. Omni is supposed to support SkySights live weather including wind and other layers as long as you are connected or pre-downloaded it. Was just wondering how well it works in practice
@@jeds465 it's good, I've got a sim card in the omni so it downloads wind forecast everywhere I fly, not sure about live wind from skysight I thought that was coming from Fanet stations, but there could be better layers pulled in from skysight, like XCspeed instead of the static potential flight distance layer. you could also just run skysight on your phone (or burnair) to get more detailed info as you go. but for wind on landing and near the slopes, this will usually be influenced by the terrain and so the pilot will always need to be aware of groundspeed to make the right judgement
@@FlyWithGreg not sure how much of a help forecast is at ground level, that can be greatly affected by thermals and terrain too small for the model, but to be honest I find omni screen far too small for all that. It's definitely what you'd prefer to be checking on your phone. Live wind data would be great, but somehow I couldn't set that up / get it working.
The ethereal sound was a really funny overkill when showing the tool 😅😅🤣🤣 brilliant
yeah I have fun making these things for you :-)

Wait 11 million views on the Catch A Cloud video!! Greg what's going on?
Never previously a fan of Anglican choir music, it has now become my go to flying music...Separation of church and flying? is that a thing?
I must say that the Air3 instrument is nearly unbeatable.

Yes it is possible to edit. :)
Cool, but an instrument dongle and software to attach to a larger tablet (or just a phone) could be better.

@@FlyWithGreg thanks. I think for me the best combo is skytraxx plus a phone running xcguide and xctrack
@FlyWithGreg the thermal assistant of skytraxx is indeed a very nice feature. I can't imagine switching to another device that doesn't have it

yes I think the Oudie is similar, but once you get the cockpit tilt angle corrected it is easier to see.

@kocot. I kind of agree with you. What alternative do you consider?
I much prefere a big screen of the Oudie N ... I don't do hike&fly so the size is not an issiue.
well, so it's not an instrument for you, why bother?
Many pilots get themselves into trouble by misjudging wind on landing and near the slopes. Does this device help with this, and to what degree?

12th view, qst like and comment! Big fan, checked out your app, its SOOO cool
Don't drop the stylus.
this is true. probably better on a short string, but I hate things that can get tangled in reserve handles/harness straps/etc.
