12:45 We're now starting the cross that red and iconic suspension bridge called the Golden Gate Bridge, which carries US-101 over the Golden Gate Strait between the cityside of San Francisco and Marin County at Sausalito, one of the world's biggest chinatowns.
14:30 As you can see, San Francisco has a lot of thick fog, even during the summer. The marine layer of the city during the day makes it very cloudy behind the sunny looks.
13:17 As we've already crossed into Marin County, here we enter Sausalito, a unique suburb of the greater San Francisco bay region. Sausalito is actually the world's biggest chinatown outside of Asia. Marin County is California's wealthiest county and America's fifth-wealthiest one.
San Jose - Palo Alto area was part of my old commute when I lived there, traffic looks like it was filmed on the weekend. 101 is usually a parking lot during rush hour (7:00-10:30AM or 3:15-7:30PM)
Great video, enjoyed every second of it! The section between SFO and I-280 is quite special for me as it was my first ever experience of a California freeway!
thanks, I loved driving every second of it (editing it on the other hand.... nahhh). SFO to I-380 to the South SF Hill to SF proper is a huge rush, that Grand Avenue exit looked extremely impressive going by it, with the way the street goes up and down next to the freeway. This whole route is great when there isn't traffic :)
This video and the one covering I-45 in its entirety within Houston are tied for your best videos in my opinion. Amazing job. Also did my eyes deceive me or did two lanes merge to one with no warning from two busy freeways at 11:47?
Wow thanks! I would say I-30 through DFW is in the same vein of video as well, but yeah I agree in that the road isn't as nice as 45 Houston. also, those downtown SF freeways only employ the topmost safety features and geometrics, didn't you know :)
Actually, I can agree a lot with that. Tydis remix of "Fine Print" and Mitis' "life of sin part 4" are both extraordinary pieces of electronic music imo, and the selections I made for this video, I hold high regards to as well.
You nail it on many fronts... --speed n' pace is fast but effective --use of signs, tracking signs and other animations --skilled, fwd-thinking and proactive driving --well written annotations Super work, IJD!!
Definitely one of the main corridors of the Bay to explore, good job on covering it. You got a few areas I didn't cover on my video, let alone on the trip.
Thanks, your video of this freeway was great as well! I understand wanting to save the northern section for another video, it's a completely different beast than the Bayshore.
"What a Ride" is RIGHT! Spectacular views of the Golden Gate, too. Oh, and to the driver who appears at about 3:09, Get that hole in your back window fixed! :-)
What a ride! How on earth did I miss this two days ago? You almost went Barbiepoledancer there lol. Did any of parts reach 10x speed? How did you and Rockersk08 manage to release videos of similar stretches of US-101 at almost the same time? Only coincidence?
Thanks for watching, I've been working on it for a while, before Rockersk08's release. I meant to have it out earlier, but this ended up (unsurprisingly) taking a long while to make. As for the speed, aside from the traffic skipping sections, it looks like the fastest I took the video amounted to a 7.52x just south of San Jose. With a speed limit of 65, that results in an image that "travels" speeds approaching 500 mph (491.4 to be exact, but I'm sure with the actual driving there was some part where 500 was broken). The traffic section south of the Golden Gate, however, was sped up 8.96x.
I appreciate that! there was a grand total of over 150 signs to put in there, but it's really not horrific once you get a good workflow going. That being said, it is most definitely the most time consuming part, and if I could do this video with all signs, then I can do anything :). I just like having it, as a part of my "brand". By the way, I noticed that you got your sign sliding looking nice and slick in your grapevine video, like you asked me about a long time ago, nice!
Ways to Improve SF with US 101 OPTION 1: They reroute US 101 out of downtown through the I-280 Interchange through King Street then The Embarcadero Street then to Bay Street then down Van Ness Avenue for a 3 blocks then turn to Lombard Street to the GG bridge, that would bypass downtown and probably relieve some congestion (but seems complicated and confusing) the pros for that would just leave I-80 Skyway and they would tear the US 101 Ramps into downtown which look terrible. OPTION 2: Bayshore freeway Turns into ALT US 101 and US 101 is routed onto I-880 and I-580 in richmond, Where It US 101 ALT joins US 101 in San Rafael and then could bypass truck traffic and etc. OPTION 3: leave it as is and hope for the best.
The Bay Area sure looks pretty... I would sure love to live there someday! But the cost of living is very high, partly the result of the tech industry making the Bay Area such a desirable place to live and work. I think I'll stick with Texas; after all, Texas sure knows how to blow California out of the water with our roads!
Agreed. Texas has great road infrastructure (except for Austin) and has all the amenities California has that I care for while maintaining urbanity. And it isn't crazy expensive to live.

Thank you for posting!! That was so cool covering over 110 miles on US Hwy 101!
It was very cool indeed. Thanks for watching.
When I first arrived in San Francisco, my first destination was the Golden Gate Bridge.

Music also plays a role in my taste of road videos. The 2 videos I mentioned had pretty amazing music that I even downloaded onto my playlist!
Actually, I can agree a lot with that. Tydis remix of "Fine Print" and Mitis' "life of sin part 4" are both extraordinary pieces of electronic music imo, and the selections I made for this video, I hold high regards to as well.
4:59 I go to California's Great America very often; I live about 25 minutes away. To get there I take 85 to 87, then onto 101.
You nail it on many fronts...
--speed n' pace is fast but effective
--use of signs, tracking signs and other animations
--skilled, fwd-thinking and proactive driving
--well written annotations
Super work, IJD!!
Thanks! I like to cut to the chase on these things.

You're in luck. I plan on releasing a new one very shortly. :)

I still cannot make myself to create signs for every single exit. That must have taken a lot of time during the editing process. Awesome work on that!

Yup, upgraded my video editor almost two years ago, which added that feature :)
Looking back at your older videos now. Never noticed lol, but youre totally right
When are you hitting the M1 West Gate Freeway? JD
Awesome vid!!

Lol yep. I've been busy lately, not much time to make these im afraid.
You worked on this for four months... Is this why you never uploaded a vid since your last one?
That, and I've just been really busy irl since January. thanks for watching!
I always associate that Golden Gate bridge with the final scene in the 1984 James Bond film, A View to a Kill

Only issue I have with US 101: There's no exit 420.

420 isn’t funny for me tho

The bay bride is way better than the golden gate imho. Maybe because I have an obsession with freeways.

It's avery nice place to live but VERY expensive, especially compared to Texas.
