    I need to show this to ALL of my friends, NONE of them watch Buffy, yet they ask for it all the time;
    Friend: "I want a show with a lead female who isn't a catatonic, useless bimbo!"
    Me: "Watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer"
    Friend: "Nah"
    Friend: "I want a show with a lead female who can kick major ass and still be a "girly" girl"
    Me: "Watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer"
    Friend: *rolls eyes*
    Friend: "I want a show that's funny and has supernatural themes and themes with realism, I want a show with a strong female lead that has depth of character, strong points and weak points. I want-"
    Me: "WATCH BUFFY!"

      The show is feeble, thin and weak plotted. Casting 28 year old women as HS sophomores and werewolves with absolutely not one canine tooth? The show is made around one scene; a cute blond boxing and beating up some cheesy vamp or demon. All the episodes are solely made around this one event, over and over. Forget and logic of congruency of plot; there is none. The only thing one can count on is the cute blond beating up some vamp, over and over. It's horrible!

    I don't think the first season is bad at all. I can agree that the storylines isn't as good as in the later ones, but I still think it's really good because that's where you really get to know the main characters for the first time. The character chemistry is very good in the first season, in my opinion.

    • @PassionoftheNerd
      @PassionoftheNerd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      +James Sarvan The chemistry started to pickup around the puppet episode. What I should have distinguished but didn't (as this is the first video I ever made for the channel) is the first season is heavy with camp. ESPECIALLY compared to the rest of the series. If you enjoy or don't have a problem with camp you might dig that first season, but I personally never developed a taste for it. When I made this video though, the only fan opinion I knew was my own. By virtue of the channel I have been introduced to thousands.

    • @jamessarvan7692
      @jamessarvan7692 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Passion of the Nerd What do you mean with "camp"? I'm not a native english speaker so there is a lot of terms I'm not familiar with.

    • @PassionoftheNerd
      @PassionoftheNerd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      +James Sarvan Camp: "Being so extreme that it has an amusing and sometimes perversely sophisticated appeal. Over the top and farcical, intentionally exaggerated so as not to be taken seriously. Found primarily in television, theatre and motion pictures, camp endeavors for satire and, for those who fully understand and appreciate the risible nature of its material, it's not surprising when it develops a cult following."
      As in a giant robot demon, or a giant rubber bug, or a talking horny puppet. Camp. I respect it, but it doesn't appeal to me.

    • @Anjalena
      @Anjalena 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Passion of the Nerd Yeah, that was the issue I took with your vid was that it didn't make that particular distinction. I always called it cheese but now I know it's called camp! The 1st Season is abundantly Campy. (much like Doctor Who! Series 1 [2005] ) I still enjoyed the 1st season DESPITE the horrid campiness because of the witty writing and fun storylines and the places the episodes took my emotions to!
      I tell you though, I truly wonder if there would have been a Season 2 of Buffy without Nicholas Brendan. His incredible comedy was always so brilliantly timed it kept us laughing and engaged in the story. And even early on, his strong passion for things (like his friend Jesse, leading to his hatred of vampires) always tugged at our hearts! And I always admired his amazing courage for one who was touted the coward. He, like Spike, would stand up and face his fear more times than not even if it meant risking his own life.
      There were a lot of little things to love about Season 1 too that I won't go into cuz I'm sure you know them. Mostly I love the interaction between the characters in this season and how they get to know each other.
      *Favorite Episode* (Bar none): Prophecy Girl --- Absolutely agree with you here!! LOVE this ep and what it leads to with When She Was Bad.
      **Note** My counselor is a big Joss Whedon fan too and he loves it when writers include psychological consequences to major traumatic events like that instead of them walking away from it going "la-ti-da!" like in most movies/shows. (good examples: Tony Stark in The Avengers to Iron Man 3. Another example: The Hunger Games.)
      --- sorry for this long note. had a lot of thoughts.

    To me, the show became pure awesome when Spike was introduced. I had the biggest man-crush on him when I was younger, I remember dressing up as him for Halloween a few times as well. He still remains one of my all time favorite fictional characters of all times, right after John Constantine.
    On another note;
    Also, to be honest, they put a lot of value on the soul in Buffy. I mean, there were plenty of fucking evil humans in the show, and they all had a soul.

    • @PassionoftheNerd

      ***** I (and Xander) actually agree with you. If there are things that are unforgivable its hard to say that that isn't one of them. But the soul-problem is VERY hard to sort out. And mostly we're discussing his arc. He grows a long way from that moment, especially if you count Angel. His is a fascinating arc.
      But that SPECIFIC moment in it was horrifying and disgusting.

    • @Brilleetoile
      @Brilleetoile 9 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      THIS ! (spoilers below)
      Spike was my fav character in the show. Wait...he MADE the show. He brought so much fun to the show ! And the ways he loved Buffy was...probably the most beautiful thing I ever seen in a tv show. His look everytime time he looked at her...how much he changed for her. He is probably the only character who truly understood her just by looking into her eyes. He deserved her much more than Angel.
      You see the thing with Spike is that he didn't need a "soul" to love her unlike Angel. And when he raped her, he hated himself for what he did to her, he gets through a lot of struggle to get his soul. He even gets tortured by Glory because he refused to tell her who key was. He sacrificed himself at the end of the show to save the world. He had the best character development ever (along with Willow).
      That's why I'll never understand people who say that Angel is better than him, seriously ? NO ! Angel got a soul yes but it was a "curse", he didn't do anything to earn it, he didn't had the choice to, it was just a "curse", also I hated this character, he was boring, always whinning and his "romance" with Buff' was boring and creepy, there wasn't any chemistry neither, or at least I couldn't feel it. The only time he was interesting, was when he was evil again. But Spike, you can't even compare, he was just the BEST !
      But I cant forgive him for raping Buffy, it's he only thing I hate about him.

    • @edmeister4031
      @edmeister4031 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      ***** Right, please explain Drusilla to me. Even better, please explain to me how it is he felt remorse in turning his own mother without a soul?
      Anyways:
      Season 6 was a very dark place for both Buffy and Spike. Buffy wasn't in a good state of mind, and her friends kept pushing for her to return to the status quo. Even Giles, her watcher, expected her to be up on her feet and commence slaying again effective immediately.
      She had literally JUST come back from the dead, and had been in heaven. She'd been DONE, it was up to someone else to take the reins. But her friends went against the natural order, and in the process upset the balance (The First Evil coming back). Spike was the only one who didn't demand anything from her, he was patient, he'd talk with her, because he knew what it was like to some extent.
      Anyway, Spike and Buffy's frail and shaky new friendship took a turn for the worse once sex was introduced. Buffy wanted to feel, and Spike just wanted to be with her. It was here that things start getting worse, as Buffy starts to think about the ramifications of her actions in sleeping with Spike. She starts to think about the Scoobies, and what they think of her, and she thus begins to treat Spike poorly. However, he allows her, because he is madly in love with her, and is willing to be her doormat for as long as she needs.
      Sometime later, Buffy finds out that Spike can hit her yet again, and Spike takes advantage of this by saying she came back wrong, because he is afraid of losing her, and love makes one do stupid things that they later regret in life, after all, Spike said it best, "You hurt the ones you love." From there, we see the relationship becoming even darker, if that's possible, and Spike becomes the enabler in this dysfunctional relationship, and allows Buffy to take her anger out on him, because he can take it.
      But pretty much, the entire thing can be laid at both their feet. Yes, Spike did try to rape Buffy, but don't forget that in their violent and dysfunctional relationship, one could infer that "No" usually meant the opposite of it. So when Spike, desperate to get Buffy back, starts trying to force her, and she says "no" his mind thinks otherwise. However, Buffy does manage to stop him, and we of course see his reaction, and if that didn't break your heart, I don't know what will.
      Here we have a vampire who is too "alive" for vampires, but too dead to be "good," regardless of his past deeds in helping the Slayer (helping stop Angelus, Glory, etc.). Honestly, I do not believe he needed a soul in order to love. You can see that he deeply loves Buffy, and Dawn, and that he loved Drusilla.
      What is so special about the soul anyway? Humans have souls, yet look at the Hitlers of the world, the murderers, rapists, dictators, what makes them better than a soulless vampire?
      Also:
      SPOILERS:
      Spuffy is happening in the comics!!!! WOOT!!!!

    This has been out for a few months, but I feel the need to add something: Feminism. Throughout the show, Buffy, Willow, Cordy, Anya, etc. are all strong, intelligent women with very distinct personalities who actually get stuff done. And they do so without ever truly abandoning stereotypically "girly" behavior - Buffy regularly fights vampires and demons, but she also likes to wear pretty dresses, since, after all, there's no rule saying you have to choose one or the other. Misogynists are portrayed in an exclusively negative light. And the show manages to have this without saying that men are worthless. Countless shows have a sort of "girls rule, boys drool" mentality where they stand up for women by having them all be competent while the men are all idiotic. Here, though, Xander, Angel, Giles, hell, even Riley and Oz save the day every now and then, even in season finales. And THAT is a rare thing in fiction.

      @@japman17 I was trying to be a bit coy 'cos spoilers, but I guess it *has* been 30 years. :) That episode is a bit of light, playful fun and then it drops the bombshell that, when Willow and co. resurrected Buffy they weren't rescuing her from a hell dimension like everyone assumed, but had instead dragged her out of paradise. She wasn't so traumatised because she was recovering from being in a hell dimension, she was traumatised because Earth was so horrific compared to where she'd been. Serious "well crap" moment, and the horror on the gang's face when they realised...
      .
      Game of Thrones is cool (but don't spoil me for S8 - it'll be a little while before I get to see it). The last couple of seasons have been disappointing, but really strong overall. I liked the premise of Westworld but Season 1 was too slow-moving for me and I dropped out halfway through. I'll probably get back to it at some point. I don't really have a "must watch" TV show at the moment. The closest is probably Doctor Who (Season 11 was disappointing but fingers-crossed it picks up again for Season 12).

    I started Buffy somewhat reluctantly and mostly rolling my eyes. By mid season 2 i was firmly stuck. I mean I almost thought there was something wrong with me i got stuck to this like it was the wire or the sopranos or something. It is an amazing tv experience and all I can say is do not judge Buffy by its cover

      +Jason O'Connell Yeah, I mean there are some special affects issues (they weren't really great at the time either people forget), but season 1 is still a lot better than the 1 series of a lot of shows. The dialogue and characters are brilliant.
      I don't know what it is about this series. It's been like 12 years since it finished and I still can't let go. There have been some couple of year gaps where I don't watch an episode, but I still always come back in between other shows. (Is that sad?) 2 years ago my girlfriend told me that I had to watch her favorite show from when she was a kid with her. You guessed it, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I was pretty hesitant on it because of nearly all the reasons that are mentioned in this video but she had me watch this and then continued to ask until I gave in. It took us two years, like a full two years to finish the show, as we are long distance and can't always devote as much time as we'd like to watching TV shows via Netflix and Hulu together. But we finally finished it, and I'm left wanting more. I never thought I'd be saying this two years ago but this is genuinely one of the best shows I've ever seen. I'm very glad I took her and your advice and gave this show a go. It was one of the best decisions on a show to invest in I've made.

      It SO GREAT when you can introduce a show to your partner and they like it! I made a "curriculum" of episodes years ago to introduce a past girlfriend to Buffy. Just 2 or 3 episodes from each season. The whole point was to give her context to enjoy the musical episode. Good stuff. No series is perfect, but they did quite well with this one, I think.

      +Daniel Young (conchashima) While I certainly agree with this sentiment, because I am forever screaming to anyone that comes at me with the word "Twilight" the words "VAMPIRES DO NOT FUCKING TWINKLE IN THE GOD DAMN SUNLIGHT!".... I did want to make a point to our amazing video creator, +Passion of the Nerd ! "Stalks her, watches her sleep for months.... 'I like watching you sleep'" Okay, okay... flag on the play! While much less creepy seeming (though how you can get less creepy with stalking, I don't know), Angel did follow/stalk/lurk around Buffy all the time! And he said several times how cute she was when she was sleeping. Both while Angel and Angelus! So... thought I'd mention that part of it at least. I know that there's a fuller context but yeah, to throw those two things in to make Edward seem shady creepy really cancels out due to Angel doing those two things as well. -- Okay, back to the show! **unpauses the video while still wondering why the hell they used that disgusting greyish sepia tone on Twilight to make EVERYONE look dead or that it's always a cloudy day, half-saturated photo or something**

      After a long night of binge drinking for the wrong reasons in an emotionally unstable state, I returned home crying to my mother, regretting every decision of the many months prior and into that night itself. Devalued and broken in spirit, I wept into my hands, i crumpled, and began to dissolve. she rose to our TV, to pop a DVD into our living room player, and started episode 5 of season 4 of Buffy... Beer Bad. Hardly a word needed exchanged, and as she held me and we watched, my tears became those of joy. I've seen Buffy, Twilight, True blood, Vampire diaries, and Buffy is still the NO#1 vampire series. No matter which other one you watch, you will always get a sense of Buffy already did it, unless you're in denial. 1Vampire falls in love with the young human schoolgirl/waitress. Buffy did it first. 2 The two vampires who have a sibling rivalry, and who both fall for the same girl. Buffy did it first. I could go on, but I trust I've made my point. Lol

      I have so many episodes that I like to one shot for a little Buffy now and then, and the that I think is the most underrated is Tabula Rasa. It has everything I love about Buffy packed into one episode. I have actually seen this one more times than Once More with Feeling, because while I do love that episode.....you have to admit quite a few of those songs have the same composition. Also, I hate when my boyfriends silly impersonation of Sarah singing "Heeeeeaaaavvveeennn" turns out to be oddly accurate....hahaha. (Of course I love Once More with Feeling, but I honestly don't think it would even make my top 10 favorite episode list...)

I love them all too much as well, but had to come up with a top 5 not long ago with buddies and it would be: 1) Hush 2) Tabula Rasa 3) Something Blue 4) The Gift and 5) Dopplegangland. Buffy is an amazingly well written show that holds up to this day. I just finished re-watching the entire series last year and I still find it to be more entertaining than many of the newer shows that have come out in recent years. But if I can be completely honest I'm going to say that most people (especial males) no matter how nerdy or how into horror/supernatural shows they might be, will just refuse to give Buffy the chance she deserves because she is a FEMALE HERO and in their mind they will either find that to be emasculating or they "can't relate", which I find to be completely stupid and immature. "relating" to the main character should have little to nothing to do with how enjoyable a show is, there are many more characters who get just as much screen time. It's the same reason why not many people were into another great show with a female lead called Dark Angel. I have many nerdy male friends who are into shows like supernatural but will straight up tell you that they don't wanna see a "show about a blonde teenaged girl" because they "can't relate", as if they could relate to the male leads in supernatural beyond the fact that they are white men, lmao, they'll never be as physically agile, attractive, intelligent, interesting, or have the social skills like the guys from supernatural, but for some reason they are turned off by a hero with a vagina. Buffy is fucking EPIC and deserves all the attention it can get so that we can get a new series in that same universe.

    I have to thank you, big time for creating this video which eventually led me to watch the first season of buffy the vampire slayer. This show is awesome in so many ways that makes me wonder, "why didn't I start watching this earlier?" I'm currently on S02 and loving it. To be honest, I would have never watched this show if it weren't for your video. To create a show like this in 1997 which is like so long ago and have all those action figures, is really amazing.

      Arna Wow. That is the kind of success story I like to hear. I honestly wasn't hooked until the end of Season 2. Prophecy Girl had me cautiously optimistic (the scene in the library where she over hears Giles is one of the best in the series.) Then there was a slight reversion to monster of the week for the beginning of Season 2. And then....well. By the end of that season I knew I was in. I hope you end up loving it the way I did.

    Ok, let's talk season one. I see a lot of comments saying that they love it and I'm glad that they do. I also like it, HOWEVER I only liked it after finishing the entire series and watching it for a second time. At least by that point, I knew that the show was amazing and I was able to see season one as endearing. The first time through for me was rough though. I'm 23 and the older I get, the less I can connive my friends to watch Buffy because they CANNOT get through the first season. That is why I agree with you about telling some people to just watch the 4 episodes you named on this video from season one (Welcome to the Hellmouth, The Harvest, Angel, and Prophecy Girl) I'd rather them get through the season with a little less character attachment than not get through it at all.

    I don't know what it is about this series. It's been like 12 years since it finished and I still can't let go. I was about a month off turning 13 when I saw it so the characters almost lead the way for me growing up and it finished when I was about 17. My favourite series of all time.

    I'm glad to see the love for Buffy The Vampire Slayer (the series) still going strong all these year's later. It's one of my favourite television series of all time; easily in my top 5. It's a shame that it didn't bring in even more ratings. Perhaps if aired in today's internet saturated world, word would have spread more easily about just how good the show is. It has comedy, drama and horror elements that appeal to a wide audience. It really should have been the most popular show. Ever. But that's just my own bias opinion. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people got stuck on the name and dismissed it outright. I had visions of the 1992 Buffy The Vampire Slayer film when the show first started airing, so I was in no hurry to watch it. However, when I finally did I was hooked! It's smart, emotional, funny, intense.....It's just really good. If anyone reading this is on the fence about the show, don't be. Give it a watch. It's well worth it. And then go watch Firefly, 'cause that's good too. (-:

I've also come to appreciate the way that as you grow you always find something new in each episode that you might not have understood fully, or caught in the past. Certain things take on new meaning. It truly is something that I can watch and rewatch, over and over again and never grow tired or bored with it. There is always something to learn, there is always something to appreciate, there is always something to leave you wanting more of these characters. It is an excellent show. This...💘 watching the series for 100th time now. About to start season 5. My bf was telling me he couldn't get into it, but that he also only watched a couple of episodes. I admitted that it would probably be hard for people to get into it nowadays, but as long as they have an open mind and remember that the show started in the late 90's with a low budget, they could learn to love it. Also, season 4, not my favorite. Although, Hush is definitely on my top favorite episodes. The general idea of going off to college and how friends grow apart, but then reconnect is great, but the whole Initiative and Adam thing...I think they could have done something different. Still, one of my favorite shows of all time. I still cry when Jennifer Calendar dies and always wish Oz would have come back. #TeamSpike

      Agreed, I also prefer the later seasons to the first few, although I think they are all good (Season 1 is fair 75/100;Season 2 is inconsistent but the ending arc is so damn good 90/100;Season 3 is great and consistent 90/100;Season 4 has a weak plot arc, but everything else is magnificent imo 87/100; Season 5 is just...awesome 95/100; Season 6 is pretty much just as good, but I dislike the inconsistent middle portion, even though its not terrible 92/100; Season 7 has some major plot problems, luckily I don't really care about plot in buffy, and the conclusion, plot holes not withstanding, is wholly satisfying, and S7 had some amazing episodes 85/100) it's interesting that there is such a large audience that loves the first 3, and dislikes anything after that, I don't get it...Or...I kind of do, I think it has something to do with the audience it draws right away with the first season feel, and the audience that sticks around for what it becomes...Perhaps I am an odd lover of Buffy, considering it's really the only genre show I appreciate so much, (it's my all time favorite, with Sopranos coming in a close second). I mostly watch realistic drama's, so I guess it makes sense why I prefer the later seasons, I think it has something to do with the abrupt change of tone between S3 and the later seasons that turns people off, as it gets marginally darker, and loses a lot of it's goofiness (although it's definitely still there xD)
      ...2 long winded comments in 10 minutes...Is this considered stalking? Did I mention this video series is awesome and I hope you continue?

    WOH. I mean yes, awesome, make people watch Buffy, that's wicked cool and I love the diss of Twilight, but the first Buff season is EPIC, and grittier and more real than later series. I still love the later series, but the earlier ones are so perfect. And I'm actually super into Buff's production too, it was dark, it was nineties, it was in-camera and didn't come across as entirely fake as digital effects sure can be. It was bitchin. Don't diss. If the first season isn't your thing, fine, but it's a thing for a lot of other people, so let them describe why it's so cool. Love the ending to this video though.

      And I am sorry, but I couldn't help but laugh at this quote
      ''first Buff season is EPIC, and grittier and more real than later series''
      ...um...wut? You can subjectively like the first season, that's fine, but to say it's "epic", "gritty" or more "realistic" than every other season in the series is just false. lol. It is the least epic, gritty, and realistic season, by a very large margin.

That's actually my number one weapon in convincing people to watch the show. :) Then I get on with the metaphors and the fact that there is The International Journal of Buffy Studies. :D

    I should start sending this link to my friends instead of doing the "Buffy speach" again... Would be much easier.

    Ist season of Buffy freaking rocked. I was sixteen, in high school, this bad ass show came on and Tuesday night on the WB was where it was at.
    Because I was sixteen and a nerd...and kinda gay.
    It was a total verbal non verbal nod to the weirdos.
