Ballad of the Anarcho Primitivist

  • This is the first time that I've worked with stock footage. I used footage from the Prelinger Archives. I've always been interested in nonfiction film making in general, not just documentaries. I've had a strong interest in essay films the last few years. They seem to be something that not to many people make. It's an entirely different beast than the video essay which is prominent on youtube these days. I would say, and I think that you'd agree with me, that those videos tend to deal more with critiquing and analyzing filmmaking itself. This short is an adaptation of a spoken word piece that I wrote and recorded for a podcast a while back. Part of me is wanting to make a lot more things like this. I'm slowly merging my love of writing with my love of film. I never really new what to do to reconcile the two but I believe that I'm figuring that out now.
While I myself am not an Anarcho-Primitivist, which you may be able to deduce, judging by the fact that you're watching this on a screen of some sort, it's an interesting philosophy. I've always genuinely enjoyed power outages, at least when they only last a day or two. I was pondering why I've always felt this way when I wrote this. It began to think that it probably has something to do with the drudgery of modern life. My thoughts quickly shifted to what the primitivist might think about all of this. I figured that, to them, a power outage could be akin to a national holiday. Then, I thought about how society would probably return to it's current state if we fail to consider addressing our current issues with more modern ideas. I hope you enjoy!

I listened to this while washing dishes… gonna have to watch it again for the visuals. I was thinking your narration on this one reminds me of that guy Joe Frank, you ever check him out? Think you’d dig his work.
