Yeah, it's really frustrating when instructions are written for people who already know what they're doing. "Just install this like you've installed 50 other packages!" No one seems to want to explain from the ground up for someone doing it the first time. This video helped a lot.
How do you make the 0:31 popup window appear again ? Cause I unchecked the box " Always show me this dialog before installing packages" and now this window doesn't show up anymore
I want instal the gensymb package, but it doesn't exist in ctan with this name I find '' waz.zip'', and when I like to insert it, this message is affiched "this does not look like a TDS-compliant root directory " what I will do? thanks in advance
Hi... Which editor are you using for MikTex? I am using TeXworks and it doesn't have the quick build option where it searches and installs the packages on it's own
I can download the package using MiKTeX2.9 and I can find it in the MiKTeX/tex/latex folder (using the root directory did not work for me). But TexMaker doesn't know that it's there. Is there any way I can tell it where it is? I've tried using the local directory, but I keep getting the same error that it is not a repository. I was thinking maybe I can put the .sty file in a directory that TexMaker uses to store packages but I can't find any information on that at all.
This was perfect! I have a quick question, though: I made my own .sty file so I didn't have to continue writing a long preamble for every document. I followed your steps and only included my .sty file in the final folder. Is this actually just a disaster waiting to happen?

I downloaded the 'geometry' package from CTAN. It neither have any .sty file nor any .ins file. Only pdf, txt and .dtx file? Any help?

Trying that out of the command shell it tells me, that the command latex is not available or wrongly spelled, what could be the problem?

What is the package? It should have a readme file that you can open with Notepad that will give you some additional instructions.
It doesnt convert my ins into an sty - what might be the problem there, dont get any errors
