      netflix has seen people are interested in true crime and put out these docs for those folks and i honestly, i find people that consume this content do it more so for entertainment and titillation than empathy for the victims - seeing as how netflix often makes these programs without consent or involvement from families.

    no, because my sister called the cops to kick out her husband at the time (now ex-husband) cause he punched the wall and was becoming aggressive with us because we found out he was cheating. The cops arrive and say "We can't do anything 'cause you invited him into your home and he lives here." He ended up leaving after the cops to talk to him. I was downstairs hiding when the cops talked to him, and let me say the conversation I heard made me mad with RAGE. The cops and he spoke about how "women are crazy" and that he should just leave before we say he did something else or we lie... They were talking so much shit and they were laughing with him. I have never trusted cops after that because wtf.

They aren't trained to do that. Thats not the deescalation procedure, thats just proving what kind of man you are AND guaranteeing further incidents. The second episode really made my blood boil. Did the police not run a background check on this woman? She had a pristine record. She worked on Wall Street, owned her own restaurant, and had absolutely no criminal record. So wouldn’t even a first year cop take a step back and say “Why would this woman who is very successful with a pristine record just wake up one day and decide to rob people at gunpoint?” AND what makes matters worse is that the cops KNEW of this monster and knew he had a record of impersonating police officers.

      The world doesn't work in the way most of us think it does. We might expect institutions whose responsibilities it is to protect and prevent harm to meet those expectations whether you need them or not and are met with a rude awakening when they don't meet those expectations. You don't get that rude awakening when you've never been in that situation. Maybe you attribute your luck/odds to institutions doing their jobs as they are supposed to. It's smoke and mirrors. It's a false sense of security meant to prevent panic. Once you see how inept institutions are at protecting people, it becomes clearer at how far humans have to go to adequately deal with DV in a consistent way. It becomes clearer how very much in its infacy institutional level DV solutions are compared to the history of casual violence.

    It's crazy that the quality of policework you're going to get can vary literally from one jurisdiction to another across the entire United States. You'll hear a story where a department pulled out all the stops to find a missing person and in the next county over they'll be routinely lying to people about needing to wait to file a report so they don't have to do the work. It's so whack.

    • @alyxxm1019
      @alyxxm1019 หลายเดือนก่อน +218

      right! separating police services along county lines is the worst practice.
      police from MY home jurisdiction REFUSED to help me because i didn't know where a crime was committed. even though i had texts from the perpetrator confessing to the crime, plus IMAGES of the person they beat, with a trach on, in the hospital, PLUS some threats toward me!

      Sometimes the differences are in the same state. On one hand, I've had police officers escort me to get my stuff from my extremely dangerous ex roommates' house so I would be safe while moving out. On the other hand, I live in Minneapolis....

    • @lestatsluv317
      @lestatsluv317 หลายเดือนก่อน +42

      It all comes down to one very important factor usually....
      Is the person who needs help rich or from a family with a good name in town? If so, you are golden. If not? "Get a restraining order so we can follow the paper trail when he kills you" is the response you will likely get.
      The latter increases drastically if you happen to be poor plus you are also a woman plus you are black or brown and/ or part of the LGBTQIA community. Or an addict. Or a sex worker of any kind. Or you are disabled or mentally ill. All of these things further decrease the chances they will even bother investigating your murder after they let the abuser kill you.
      Once you listen to enough true crime, it becomes painfully clear just how little this country's system cares about victims.

    I'm in tears, I've been watching Kennie for years and this video dropped at the perfect time. My male uni roommate has been increasingly creepy towards me; we are the only ones on the top floor and there have been several downright unacceptable instances. Today, I found a lighter in my room (I don't smoke anymore, haven't for YEARS) and I confronted him about sneaking into my room. I'd suspected someone had been in my room for weeks as I'm very meticulous about my stuff, and things kept going missing/moving about. I honestly expected him to say it wasn't his, but he said "yes that's mine" with no hesitation with a blank look on his face. My friend was on the phone when I confronted him and even she was terrified. I left to take the bus to my uni office immediately and filed a complaint, but they said they could only be able to move me IN A MONTH. I've just decided to take showers at the gym and avoid home until then. You yelling at how egregious these men's behaviour was so cathartic. I love my room, it's my comfort place, I took time to decorate it so nicely, and now I have to move, and I don't feel safe at all. This made me feel mad instead of sad, and I'd much rather that. Thank you.

      Don't just go to UNI office, go to the city police of whatever town it is and reported there too, and tell your family, if you have any uncles, brothers, or anyone let them KNOW. It is crucial to let everyone around you know, if you are close with any professors let them KNOW!! It is exhausting having to explain yourself, again, and again, and again but this what has to happen when UNI offices don't listen. ALSO MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF IT! I've been an RA before its BULLSHIT that they are making you wait a month to be moved. There are instances where there are emergency moves that can be made on campus. This is one of them, tell them you feel unsafe! Tell them you CANNOT wait a month, and if they do so, they will be liable for anything that may happen to you. I am so sorry this was not taking seriously, it is! DO NO take no for an answer when your wellbeing is one the line. Someone you talk to, family, professors, or friends will be able to help you, even if it's just to help advocate for you with you!

That's one of the reasons the show is so successful: because it depicts the police as it should be, not as it is.
      I mean, the article didn't go into details about the history of American police and its direct links to enforcing American slavery but, on the "believing survivors" front, I think it was correct.

      It's not abnormal for women who are not victims of DV getting killed or harmed as collateral damage.
      Im Portugal there's the case of Marta. This girl was 19 when she started dating a man in his 30s. They dated only for 3 months because he started to display controlling behavior so she ended thr relationship.
      He tried to convince her to get back but she declined. So he went to her work place, a family's bakery where she worked with her cousin (another woman) with a gun and calling Marta out. Her cousin told him to go away or she was calling the police, meanwhile he went after Marta and her cousin tried to stop him. He immediately shot the cousin who died on the spot and then shot Marta in the head 2 times. Marta survived but was left as a vegetable, she has been recovering for years now and lives of people's donations to keep with therapy so relearned how to talk (struggles) and can walk few steps. She lives with the bullets in her head and she's dependent for the rest of her life, her mother had to quit her job to become her full time carer.
      Her cousin wasn't a victim of DV and barely knew the perpetrator but she happened to be Marta's co-worker.
      2 young lives ended that day, the guy caught 25 years in jail (max time in Portugal) and probably hes already out and still on time to live life. I'm sure the first thing he will do is download dating apps.

    I think what's so frustrating about these is that across the board there are so many places where if someone had taken DV or these people's safety seriously it wouldn't have escalated to a point where someone was dead or been seriously injured. I've known people who have gotten out of abusive relationships where the ex is stalking them, harassing them, one had sabotaged their car and the police basically said they just weren't taking the break up well but they couldn't do anything until he'd done something worse. And it's like when? When she's dead or hospitalized you can step in but you can't do something about a man calling his ex on a burner phone because she keeps blocking his number to scream at her about where she is because he drove past her house at 11 PM and her car isn't there? When he lives and works in a different city altogether and has no reason to be at her house in the first place other than to stalk her? The legal system can just be incredibly frustrating.

    • @redleeks6253
      @redleeks6253 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Those are the consequences of trying to bave relationships with men of any kind.
      Usually women aren't killed or harmed by gang members or serial killers or anything like that.
      Domestic violence is the main cause of serious injury in women and more than half of female victims of homicide are murdered by partners or ex partners.
      In both 2 episodes we have a pattern of women letting a man who was boyfriend or just a fuckbuddy into their homes.
      Episode 1:
      Girlfriend takes boyfriend inside her house (a man obsessed with guns and knives..charmer). He attacks her. Then she sees him around the house and instead of calling someone she lets him in. I believe the woman was lying when she said he popped up after her (she probably let him in)..and then years after he comes with apologies and she lets him in again.
      Then the second woman, who's not serious, just a fuckbuddy, and allows him in her house when he gets unemployed. Free puxi, free house and free service? This man has family why didn't he ask for help to his family? She ended up captive and beaten in her own house.
      3rd case:
      Another woman decides to allow her coworker, a fuckbuddy, inside her house. Then gets him fired. Again, i dont think she became suspicious of the urine favor but probably found out he was seeing/flirting other women and got him fired. He was inside the house waiting for her. Come on..shes dating a serial kidnapper, Domestic abuser, tells her boss and gets him fired and goes back at the home she leaves unlocked?
      I've made mistakes too. Living abroad and letting a man inside my apartment because he was helping me without even going to his place first. But my boss and coworkers knew him and the place i lived had reception and cameras. This was in china so if he killed me he would get life sentence. I was also his dirty little secret so i was never a threat because i was in other town and never tried to contact anyone.
      So nobody in his social circle knew i existed.
      Ofc these types of men lurk on dating apps and i was a very vulnerable target as foreigner and knew to the city without much English...still in a country where even dogs assholes have cameras.

      He wasn't wrong, unfortunately. Protective orders generally do very little against individuals with a history of violence and/or an increased likelihood to become so in the future (i.e. stalkers). They're more useful for limiting social access to you and providing crucial evidence for any potential future court cases if they escalate, which, categorically, they're likely to do. Basically, it could help you put them behind bars, but it certainly won't guarantee your safety until then. Quite the opposite, in many cases. Also, laws regarding stalking in the U.S. aren't always comprehensive enough to be helpful until the stalker has attempted to harm the victim. For good reason, to be fair, but by that point it's often too late.

      Yes, I don’t remember the specific court cases but I learned about this after watching a true crime video about a man who went a rampage in NYC. Killed a woman who had rejected him and then went on the run car-jacking, injuring and killing people throughout NYC. He finally made his way to the subway where multiple police officers identified him but hid instead of trying to stop him. Despite them having guns and him having a knife. He then attacked the T driver and I think someone else. The T driver apprehended him.
      I remember reading about how the police did nothing and thinking how ridiculous that was and that they should be fired. But, nope. He went on to sue where his case was thrown out because PO are not required to protect civilians. And the previous Supreme Court cases were referenced.

      Yeah I think it’s perfectly okay for people of all genders to seek fulfillment outside of dating. It’s truly based on how everyone individually values romantic love.
      And for some, the trauma from past relationships or plain life experiences outweighs the want/desire to gamble on person after the other, after the other. All just to get an experience of love, lust or affection that /many/ cannot sustainably provide another human being, let alone themselves.
      Like this documentary shows, women and men can both be out to do no good to others and unfortunately the ones who aren’t like that have to share the world with irrational people who are led by their whims.
