Romesh for what it's worth if you're reading this, I've never heard my dad laughing so much in my 28 years of life than when he was watching one of your shows. I think a lot of us have that voice but it's great to know we are not alone. I think it is because of this voice (among other things) that has made religion so prevalent throughout history as a coping mechanism for it. I can't begrudge anyone's religion when its purpose is to heal/sooth the voice and keep us content/happy like "normal" folk
My Dad smiles from ear to ear but only when he's hurting me. I can't remember ever hearing him laugh, just that nasty wide smirk. I just caught him today, he's been lying and hiding my paperwork. I'm absolutely furious. I have thoughts of hurting him. I won't but I sure want to and damn it does he deserve it.
I really like Romesh. No nonsense, down to earth. No bollocks. Far more interesting than he might appear from his TV stuff - obviously a really smart, introspective guy.
I might be off kilter with this but it’s coming from a place of sympathy for those suffering with a negative disposition. I want to lean into Transactional Analysis as a scaffold and suggest that we have three ego states to which we might be cathected : child, parent or adult (please checkout their respective characteristics for your own clarity). If your propensity is towards cathextion to your child ego state under moments of discord and your early life experience is somewhat fraught then this might lead to an understanding why you’re caught in the anxious state that’s typically attributable to a scared, fractious child despite your adult or parent state trying to remind you to not be so worried. Your inner child is insecure and doesn’t trust and doesn’t listen to your inner parent or inner adult to help you stay calm and positive. This might not be a solution for you but for me it gave me a starting point to build on and I hope that it will maybe give you some help.❤
Are you familiar with IFS (internal family systems)? I also have a group of internal voices that have made things really challenging and IFS has been really helpful so I thought I'd suggest it. Wishing you peace.
The reason why you develop that part, the "prick inside of your head" is due to trauma. What Romesh went through as a child was super traumatic. Really appreciate this talk.
Romesh is one of the most genuine people in entertainment. Every time I’m feeling low or having similar thoughts to the ones he speaks about, I watch his vids and automatically feel 100x better. Thanks for sharing your light with the world Romesh, even though you struggle to see it yourself

“Not that I’ve worn a leather suit and I never will” - as funny as Romesh is, he’s dead serious when it comes to not supporting animal abuse and that’s what makes him a truly incredible person, the comedy is just a fantastic addition. 👌🏆🍇🌱
Is his family vegetarian? Leather doesn't come from conventional animal abuse, they're a byproduct of the beef industry. They would be wasted otherwise. Leather has a lot of practical uses, and isn't simply aesthetic.
This is not true actually, leather is in many instances its own industry and even if it was a byproduct, it's a byproduct of an insane and cruel industry. Imagine walking around wearing someone's dogs skin,@@poppinc8145

Dealing with the voice in my head - man that absolutely resonates. It's me and it frustrates the crap out of me. I did a management course last and 9 out of 10 of us felt like we had imposter syndrome. Scary stats. John Cleese has the same thing, too. Incredible really and so annoying if you suffer from it.

When Romesh talked about the voice telling you ‘this is what you are at your core’, that really resonated with me. Whenever I feel depressed or anxious, I get this feeling that is my natural state that I always return to and represents how I truly feel, even though I quite rarely feel like that.

Its good to know im not the only one struggling, I've essentially got PTSD from being bullied on the daily In school which lead me down soo many different avenues one of which was thinking I was Trans. I know im not now but it had such a profound affect on my mental health for the past 10 years. Ive been battling anxiety and depression for the longest time and its shit Everyday feels like a battle im at war in my head with anxiety misfiring trying to figure the stuff out. Its ok not to be ok luv y'all xx
@@kendallstark4302 I guess it depends on your perspective. I share a very similar heritage to Romesh. I found the BTS funny because of him giving shade to his father and the interactions between his mother and wife. The stand-up felt a bit different to his previous material. A colleague of mine who saw the tour live was disappointed because his material changed. She's quite clean cut and most probably liked the "cleaner" stuff that he previously did while on the Netflix show it seemed to be a bit more edgy and sexual. I guess we all have our own perspectives and opinions. However, I loved this interview. Unlike other panel show interviews, it really got under the skin and you really got to know him.
My inner voice is an unadulterated monster saboteur. Crushing my spirit and exiling any kind thought or feeling of worth in my head. Every. Single. Day. I've loved Romesh for years and recently saw him in NYC. I wish it was easier for us to see ourselves as others see us. He's incredible. An absolute master of comedy and total savage of comeback quips. When he spoke about fantasizing about taking his life...wow...his brief hesitation, his breathing, I could feel it. An unexpected but meaningful video of one of my favorite people on earth...loved it. Thank you so much. #romeshranganathan
Listening to this the second time, because there are so many things a middle class Asian can relate to. What Romesh might perceive his dad as "very bad with money", it was possible that he spent all his money on his family that he went broke, and still came home to a nagging wife and an entitled kid with tantrums (my interpretation to relate to it, based on other things mentioned in this talk). That's what happened with my dad and how I treated him, he was hanging by the edge making ends meet and all hell tipped over in the family once he went down with a heart problem.
The reaction of his parents moving his stereo is real. I behave like that when my anxiety and worry is through the roof. With a great therapist I'm learning a whole different way of thinking.
So particularly sympathetic to his dealing with that awful inner gremlin that gnaws away at your head all the time. His humor is one of his coping mechanisms. Such a good and intelligent man.
Stephen, I don't know if you'll read this, but man you are absolutely perfect interviewer. It's a joy to listen to someone who can pay such respect to his guests and intervern only when is needed. Listening is a skill that very few interviewers have. Keep going man, you are young and I'm sure you'll achieve a lot in your life. 👍

Why you always wear black?
Romesh for what it's worth if you're reading this, I've never heard my dad laughing so much in my 28 years of life than when he was watching one of your shows. I think a lot of us have that voice but it's great to know we are not alone. I think it is because of this voice (among other things) that has made religion so prevalent throughout history as a coping mechanism for it. I can't begrudge anyone's religion when its purpose is to heal/sooth the voice and keep us content/happy like "normal" folk

I just caught him today, he's been lying and hiding my paperwork. I'm absolutely furious. I have thoughts of hurting him. I won't but I sure want to and damn it does he deserve it.

I might be off kilter with this but it’s coming from a place of sympathy for those suffering with a negative disposition.
I want to lean into Transactional Analysis as a scaffold and suggest that we have three ego states to which we might be cathected : child, parent or adult (please checkout their respective characteristics for your own clarity).
If your propensity is towards cathextion to your child ego state under moments of discord and your early life experience is somewhat fraught then this might lead to an understanding why you’re caught in the anxious state that’s typically attributable to a scared, fractious child despite your adult or parent state trying to remind you to not be so worried.
Your inner child is insecure and doesn’t trust and doesn’t listen to your inner parent or inner adult to help you stay calm and positive.
This might not be a solution for you but for me it gave me a starting point to build on and I hope that it will maybe give you some help.❤
Are you familiar with IFS (internal family systems)? I also have a group of internal voices that have made things really challenging and IFS has been really helpful so I thought I'd suggest it. Wishing you peace.

The reason why you develop that part, the "prick inside of your head" is due to trauma. What Romesh went through as a child was super traumatic. Really appreciate this talk.
Romesh is one of the most genuine people in entertainment. Every time I’m feeling low or having similar thoughts to the ones he speaks about, I watch his vids and automatically feel 100x better. Thanks for sharing your light with the world Romesh, even though you struggle to see it yourself

“Not that I’ve worn a leather suit and I never will” - as funny as Romesh is, he’s dead serious when it comes to not supporting animal abuse and that’s what makes him a truly incredible person, the comedy is just a fantastic addition. 👌🏆🍇🌱
Is his family vegetarian? Leather doesn't come from conventional animal abuse, they're a byproduct of the beef industry. They would be wasted otherwise. Leather has a lot of practical uses, and isn't simply aesthetic.

Dealing with the voice in my head - man that absolutely resonates. It's me and it frustrates the crap out of me. I did a management course last and 9 out of 10 of us felt like we had imposter syndrome. Scary stats. John Cleese has the same thing, too. Incredible really and so annoying if you suffer from it.

When Romesh talked about the voice telling you ‘this is what you are at your core’, that really resonated with me. Whenever I feel depressed or anxious, I get this feeling that is my natural state that I always return to and represents how I truly feel, even though I quite rarely feel like that.
These are awesome questions and a great, down-to-earth interview. You really listen to your guest here rather than talking to fill the space, and that gives so much more room to actually get to know the person. You've earned a subscriber!

Its good to know im not the only one struggling, I've essentially got PTSD from being bullied on the daily In school which lead me down soo many different avenues one of which was thinking I was Trans. I know im not now but it had such a profound affect on my mental health for the past 10 years. Ive been battling anxiety and depression for the longest time and its shit Everyday feels like a battle im at war in my head with anxiety misfiring trying to figure the stuff out.

@@kendallstark4302 I guess it depends on your perspective. I share a very similar heritage to Romesh. I found the BTS funny because of him giving shade to his father and the interactions between his mother and wife. The stand-up felt a bit different to his previous material. A colleague of mine who saw the tour live was disappointed because his material changed. She's quite clean cut and most probably liked the "cleaner" stuff that he previously did while on the Netflix show it seemed to be a bit more edgy and sexual.
I guess we all have our own perspectives and opinions.
However, I loved this interview. Unlike other panel show interviews, it really got under the skin and you really got to know him.

Listening to this the second time, because there are so many things a middle class Asian can relate to. What Romesh might perceive his dad as "very bad with money", it was possible that he spent all his money on his family that he went broke, and still came home to a nagging wife and an entitled kid with tantrums (my interpretation to relate to it, based on other things mentioned in this talk). That's what happened with my dad and how I treated him, he was hanging by the edge making ends meet and all hell tipped over in the family once he went down with a heart problem.

The reaction of his parents moving his stereo is real. I behave like that when my anxiety and worry is through the roof. With a great therapist I'm learning a whole different way of thinking.
