    I absolutely love everything about Fjallraven

    Have lots of Fjallraven clothing and equipment and absolutely love most of it. Purchased the Eco Shell jacket 2 years ago for use in the Scottish Highlands and UK Lake District. On the 2 occasions I have used it in rainy conditions it has wetted out within 15 minutes leaving me soaked through and at risk of hypothermia despite having reproofed with Fyallraven DWR spray. As a loyal Fyallraven customer I have to say I am really dissapointed that a jacket costing £450 has failed on the 2 occasions it was really needed to perform. I am now using a 10 year old Rab EVent jacket that keeps me dry. Love how the jacket looks and the ethics behind it but could not recommend it for typical UK conditions.

    I find a hard time to find wind and waterproof jacket that don't feel wet inside after being in rain for a while #longlifelesswaste

    So by using a hydrophilic membrane is the water in very wet (but cold) conditions going to be "sucked" to the inside once the face fabric is soaked. Because the DWR is not going to keep the face fabric dry forever. Or will the membrane still keep me dry and just be not breathable anymore ?

    • @70kungbore
      @70kungbore 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the Keb Eco Shell jacket the membrane is waterproof and can stand minimum 20000 mm waterpillar regardless of condition of the face fabric.

      When the face fabric is soaked (wet out) the jacket will not breathe and will become a like a plastic bag. Therefore the sweat builds up inside the jacket and then you and your clothes will get wet.
      You will get cold. Besides that the wet face fabric will also become very cold. It happened to me in the mountains and I got slightly hypothermic. That’s the biggest problems with membrane jackets unfortunately.
      Because of that I’ve invested in a GoreTex Shakedry jacket that doesn’t have any face fabric. The membrane is the outer layer and cannot wet out and get me cold as a result. It will be way less durable though.

    Hello Fjällräven, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
    Before buying your poncho, i used a different brand and the difference is night and day:
    I usually walk off-trail and where no one else would dare to go and i sweat a lot, so i often get moist/wet when walking and i avoid rain jacket and rain pants; its noisy and it makes me hotter.
    The old brand of poncho i used was so bad at breathing, that i actually took it off since i got more wet by condensation than the rain.
    Then i bought your poncho and i must say that the breathability is just superb; i can keep it on while sitting and having a coffee and my sweat evaporates much much better than the other brand.
    I no longer have to choose between wet from sweat or wet from the rain!
    And it keeps my backpack dry (A Stubben by the way) 🙂

    My question is what is the purpose of the middle membrane if the waterproofness is done by the spray? I'm also interested to know what the spray actually does. My experience is that no jacket survived a heavy rain and not sure if the dwr just washed out with time from smaller rains or it will never repel the water no matter what i do.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Cristian! The purpose of the membrane is to transport moisture from inside the jacket out.
      It is a constant compromise between breathability and waterproofness. For example, a plastic bag is 100% waterproof, but the inside would become very humid and eventually you would become wet, simply because the moisture that you create have no where to go. And on the other end of the spectrum, a really airy and light jacket, made for hot summer months will not provide any waterproofness.
      So, creating a jacket that is breathable, waterproof and environmentally friendly is tricky, that is why many use PFC's in the impregnation, however it is really bad for the environment.
      The DWR needs to be re-impregnated over time with a PFC-free impregnation spray to keep its function, so if you experience a function loss,
      I hope this answers your question, have a nice Friday! / Lucas

    What would you suggest for sub-tropical (hot / humid)? It seems the eco-shell could actually work in the reverse way (not good). Same for the "hydratic"?

    • @sdemosi
      @sdemosi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most waterproof & breathable shells have the same tech which requires the humidity inside the jacket to be higher than that outside for water vapour release. They're not effective in very hot and humid countries. They may be worse than getting wet naturally because you have a useless wet shell on you.
      In those climates you have a few options. Wear fast drying clothes because you're going to get wet. Worry more about wind blocking when it's severe than waterproofing and wear stuff with a pertex outer layer which provides some light shower protection but mostly blocks wind. Wear clothes like Paramo which use a completely different weather proofing tech (Nikwax Analogy) that has some pluses in humid climates. Abandon jackets and wear a poncho. Go for air permeable waterproofing such as Polartec Neoshell. Just a little bit of airflow makes a big difference in comfort. Neoshell at 10k h/h performed better for me than GTX at 28k because Neoshell didn't wet out. It actually felt like the modest airflow was drying the membrane. Unfortunately Neoshell had serious supply chain issues because it was an early electrospun air permeable membrane but there are other alternatives now. I understand Outdoor Research's Ascentshell and North Face's Futurelight are similar but I've never tried them.
      The takeaway is most waterproof breathable membranes simply don't work under these circumstances but are great in colder and less humid weather.

    I haven’t tried eco shell yet but with other solutions I haven’t found one that will keep me dry all day. I’m a delivery rider and in heavy rain that lasts for hours I always end up soaked. Is this inevitable? Would ecoshell keep me dry for longer, and if so for how long in heavy rain with me being active as well and so producing moisture from the inside too?

    I discovered this brand more than seven years ago at Naturkompaniet in Gothenburg and I have never abandoned it since. Some of the garments I bought then are still a main part of my daily winter and spring clothing here in Italy where I use to live without showing any signs of wear. They are not cheap but their price justifies the great and durable quality.

    • @FABM27
      @FABM27 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am Indian living in Denmark who uses a lot of Fjallraven products. The humidity is simply too much in most places in India to wear shells. My recommendation would be to use technical fabrics, carry extra set of clothes to change out of...its warm in India so being wet should not be an issue. In India, where its so humid, you can be wearing 100% cotton or linen, which are breathable and yet get soaking wet with sweat. But if you are in a cold place or higher altitude then ofcourse you will need a jacket!
