    My mother is currently sifting through old photographs.
    She lost her father (my grandfather) around dinner time yesterday due to a heart attack.
    Now comes the time for her, where she can no longer _know who he is,_ but instead simply _remember who he was._

      +Daniel Renard Sorry for your and your mother's loss, Danel -- all those old photographs and documents, and forcing us to remember what we can, is an amazing opportunity to think about a life and how who someone was transfers into who the next generation is.

      Thanks. It may sound cold of me, but I was personally never all that close to him, nor were my two sisters.
      It of course saddens me to know a family member has passed away and I do support my mother who was of course, very close to her father.
      My grandfather just had ideals that were incompatible with the times of my youth. For example, he was greatly disappointed in me, even as a pre-teen, for not knowing how to fix a flat bike tire; I either had my parents tell me they would do it for me and bike wheels in general, were built sturdier back then, than they were in the 1940's/50's when he was a kid, so there was no need for me to having learned that at such an age. I DO know how to fix one, today at least.
      He and his wife _(not my grandmother)_ nearly never invited family over and often declined invitations. The invitations he did accept, he would just sit in a corner with his wife, smoke cigarettes and drink to the point where drunken arguments would ensue with other relatives and/or their loved ones, until they would finally be kicked out and sent home, so... nope. Wasn't all that close.
      My fondest and probably only positive memory I have of him, is where he drew me a locomotive with a common blue ink pen, on a piece of graph paper, when I was a child _(I loved locomotives back then.)_ ...but he kept it. - Wait a minute... that memory *sucked* too! D:

    • @militantpacifist4087
      @militantpacifist4087 9 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    • @a2aaron
      @a2aaron 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      It's not that a person is small, it's that the world is so big that the person is small by comparison.
      The Earth holds every city and mountain we have climbed, every great book and painting.
      Jupiter could fit over 1000 earths. Does that make earth small?

    man this video kind of made me sad.
    Like knowing no one will care about your death unless you did something incredible and never done before, and even then, you will be mentioned as a ''name'' rather than a person.
    But hey we didn't cry when our ancestors died as of today because they died of an arrow to the face, a sword in the stomach, a stone against your temple or drowned.
    Come to think of it: many people died, and we know not even half of their names.

    • @mrobusto1010
      @mrobusto1010 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      +AngryDemonBowser According to a 2013 study, the average American knows about 600 people. Of course, this number will surely increase as we become ever more connected through various social media platforms. Comparatively, approximately 106 billion people have ever existed. About 7 billion people are currently alive. Given those numbers, any given individual only knows 5.66x10^-7% of the entire historical, global population.
      An equally crazy thought is how many people never had a chance to be known. According to UN statistics, the current global infant mortality rate is 49.4 deaths per 1000 births. I couldn't find exact statistics on global infant mortality rates a century ago, but rates in some cities were around 30%. Just 100 years ago, 30% of all people born were likely to die before they had a chance to be "known."
      It's kind of daunting--how few people we know on the grand scale of thing. Perhaps it doesn't matter. What is the difference between having 1 friend and 1000 friend?. Happiness and fulfillment are all subjective.
      If it makes you feel any better, what does individual impact matter anyway on a universal scale? When the inevitable heat death of the universe occurs, there will be no one left to remember anyone, or anything for that matter.

    It's amazing to me how accurate it is too have immortality because of mummification and documentation. There are so many ancient societies that would have been lost to history without it, and it really gets you to wonder how much more amazing history there is that was either not documented, or if the documentation was destroyed.

      +Peter Schmidt It's the same thing with inventions -- just think how many times a particular thing was discovered, like the proper ratio of copper and tin to make bronze, that was lost before it was recorded. That's part of discovery, really -- not only coming up with something, but recording that discovery in such a way as to allow others to remember and use it.

    I recently learned about my Great-Great-Grandfather (Alf), and some of the things he did. I think it's really cool to learn about these things, remember them, and pass them on. In a way, it's like a little taste of immortality. I learned where he came from and things he did that cross over with my interests even now.
    All my life I've been fascinated by the story of RMS Titanic. I had (still have) a book about Dr Ballard's 1987 voyage to the wreck, and I had my nose in that regularly. Turns out, Great great grandfather Alf was on a ship crossing the Atlantic on that same night. Allegedly, due to radio range, his ship would have been the last ever to hear a radio call from Titanic. They altered course to join in the rescue, but RMS Carpathia got there first and told them they'd gotten all the survivors they could find.
    A few years later, Alf was in the Canadian Army as a medic, but his station got shelled by German artillery and mustard gas in the battle of Passchendale. He survived, but his injuries got him sent home. There, he helped organize and set up the Red Cross and St. John Ambulance in Eastern Canada.
    And a hundred years later, here's me.

    I figured out a long time ago that I will have no impact on the world, really.
    That my actions don't matter.
    And that living is NOT about being remembered, but experiencing the world while you can. Not caring if people know or care about you.
    Once I realized that, I was happy.

      I'd add to that... I think it's about leaving things in a better state than how you found them. For the benefit of the next person. For the benefit of next generation. For the benefit of other species - animal, plant, for who and whatever.
      It's not about the value you can extract from your experiences on earth while you're alive... That's still - sadly - quite an inward and self-orientated perspective.
      Instead, shift your perspective around. You're not just you. You're part of a collective.
      I reckon it's about continually trying to leave something better than when you found it... both on a small, day-to-day basis and the biggie, how you leave things after you pop your clogs, kick the bucket, shuffle off this mortal coil, you know.
      Apply that to everything, everyone, the planet, where you live etc, and you'll be ok.

      Hi there, of course you can quote which ever part you like. It's really nice that you agree with the sentiment - please do share. No need to credit me personally, I prefer anonymity in any case. You can credit my screen name if you like, but it doesn't matter (the screen name is part of a quote).

    All those amazing videos we see everyday on youtube are just a fraction of what is possible in the world. Amazing feats have been done throughout history but only now are we able to display them for one another to see. Imagine if we had video recording 200 years ago, what a different world we'd be in.

    I really enjoyed this video! It's stuff like this I think about all the time and enjoy learning about. For Centuries, humans have been trying to record some type of record of themselves. Today, we have the technology to record mundane things , that back then no one even thought about. It really puts into perspective how much life has changed and evolved over the years.

    Actually, 16 million out of the 5.7 Billion people in 1995 means that approximately 0.28% of the world population were connected to the internet in 1995, not 2.7%.
