This video is excellent listening practice for beginners! Thank you so much! When you speak, I recognise more words than I do when listening to many other native Japanese speakers.
I remember buying train tickets in Italy and you'd have these people hanging around trying the scam you "by helping you out" even when I was with a local. It made the whole ticket purchasing on a machine very annoying. But this looks waaaaay better :D Thank you for showing us how to to purchase a ticket two different ways 😊
Thank you for showing us this! I work for s Swiss train company and it is very interesting to see how it is in Japan! I learn Japanese since 1½ years and you are teaching me a lot 💚
Go through those gates at Nagoya station a lot! So fun to see someone else do it in a video. Lucky the unreserved cars where quiet, could have been a long walk to the other end. I sometimes jump an earlier train if unreserved is quiet on it. Great guide for those wanting to book. Is very handy the machines do other languages.
This is one of the best detailed videos showing us how to buy the ticket from the machine. The english subtitles were most helpful for us non japanese to understand. I have always wondered how to select the station where we are actually boarding if it is not the departure station for the Shinkansen. So you showed that yours was Shinjuku and that selection was towards the end of the purchase process. My question is what happens if we want to alight from the Shinkansen station and transfer to a local line to the final destination. Eg. Tokyo - Sendai to Matsushimakaigan. The shinkansen stops at Sendai and we need to transfer to Matsushimakaigan but there is no option on the machine to say where is our final destination. If anyone can help, it will be most appreciated.
Thank you you've been a great help learning japanese this year. I started in January you are the best teacher you make everything easy to remember and really clear to understand ❤️
I actually gave up trying to reserve seats on the Tokaido Shinkansen. Being a foreigner with the JR pass, we can only take Kodama or Hikari trains. The reserved cars were always full but I found there were almost always seats in the non reserved cars, especially car 1 since its so far to walk. Being a tourist its also handy to be able to just hop on/hop off. I do have a nice collection of reserved seat tickets from more obscure places in Japan haha Also for your viewers, you can select english as the language. The ticket machines can also be used with JR pass as well in recent years.
This incredible helpful as I'll be taking a shinkansen from Tokyo to Niseko to ski and back in 3 weeks from now. 8 think my ski bag will fit wherever i sit in those luggage racks.
This was so helpful! I'm going to Japan next week with my parents and my mom wants to go to the station near Mt. Fuji and take the Shinkansen there from Tokyo. Since this vacation is mostly for me, I'm in charge of planning and as someone who doesn't speak Japanese, I was worried I wouldnt be able to manage so thank goodness this was recommended to me!!
Just found your channel. Thanks for making videos like this. It’s exactly what I needed. Learning Kanji in context is very helpful. & Thanks for furigana!
To be honest this was great for me to really figure out what the peeps at the counter were saying to me all this time. Every time I go I feel like I understand a larger percentage but never all of it. They speak very fast sometimes.
Sakaya Sensei.. please make more this kind of videos… very very usefullll.. Love it. ❤❤❤❤ And .. if you can also put english meaning or what we should pay attention too.. that would be very helpfull… ありがとうございます🙏🙏🙏
I like to see these travel videos from Japan, and experience a little bit of Japan. I have never been there in person. Also very nice to see your face, and hear you talk, when I compare to other Japanese travel TH-camrs where it may just be text, and no video/audio of the person behind the TH-cam channel.
Thank you very much. I have not been in Japan in 10 years and this is a very helpful refresher course (complete with furigana, thank you!) ahead of a 3 week trip this Winter. You are a great teacher!
That's so nice! Hope you have a safe trip. I'll be in Japan again this mid-late December. The first time I've been in Japan, I was confused too until I finally got a Suica card to easily pay for all of my train tickets using the ticket machine instead. The most embarrassing part was when I sat on the wrong seat number on my way to the airport during my last day in Japan. A couple approached me asking for where the seat number was. I was totally confident until we both compared ticket numbers and we were laughing about it. I'm so glad that couple were kind enough to understand. 🤣 Anyways, take care always! 💗💗💗💗💗Yep, that's an F1 Redbull Racing Car powered by Honda. ^^
When my friend and I were in Japan in May and June, we took four shinkansen trips; Yokohama to Nagoya, Nagoya to Kyoto, Osaka to Hiroshima, and Hiroshima to Fukuoka. Every time it was quite easy to purchase the reserved green car tickets using the machines.
I live near Nagoya and use Nagoya station quite often. I think its the least confusing station amongst the big cities! Also being centrally located in japan, this feels like the main transportation hub of japan.
Thank you very much for this great video its really assisting because I will have a trip from Tokyo to Nagoya for work soon it'll be my first time in Japan. Please keep posting. However did not ticket officer say it is a first wagon so you went there ? どうもありがとうございました。
Great video! Love the subtitles and hiragana above kanji. Really useful video too. Most of us find purchasing those tickets confusing, especially when you end up with multiple tickets that you have to insert into the entry/gate. 😅
I like how the counter person gives you all the info you need for your travel. Even without asking. In Australia, some of these workers behave like they don't want to be there, and can't wait to get rid of you as soon as possible. With a smile 😮😂
Please feel free to also include bonus clips of Nacchan 😻 😇 Thank you for creating these videos and taking us with you, they are tremendously helpful. 🙏😃
When I was in Japan the Shinkansen ticket cost 14,198 JPY. It was a bit pricey but the experience riding the bullet train was definitely great!! I was also confused reading the ticket to what car should I go, but thanks for the staff I can ask if I’m on the right platform! Thanks for uploading this video.
It is really amazing how many great railways Japan built. And all of them are still very well maintained. When I visited Japan, I was really confused because of all complexity, and it looks like I was not alone :)
I was going from Shin-Yokohama to Kyoto on the Shinkansen and I got on the wrong train, since it departed 2min before my train where I had a seat reservation for. So it was the Kodama instead of the Hikari, which was way slower 😄
I admit I only turned on subtitles when you talked of jr pass as I plan on visiting japan next fall and planning on getting jr pass just because I figured 1st day with jet lag and not knowing what doing why not just travel the shinkansen to random places But yes after almost 5 months of learning Japanese I am starting to experiment without subtitles and while I can pick out 30% to 70% of words I like to look at movie the last samurai with tom cruise character having a below average basic conversational level after 6 months in captivity I think it is very possible to learn by watching anime and combining duolingo
さやかさん ありがとうございました。I was suprised that you were surprised to see a completely normal racing car ;) Isn't Formula 1 (F1) racing a thing in Japan? I thought I heard that Nagoya had a famous racing track, but I might be mistaken. Anyway, great video, especially the mix of real life spoken Japanese in every day situations with Japanese caption and the option of English caption makes it really fantastic for a first year Japanese language learner like myself. Please continue this format! Also, the German train company could learn soooo much from Japanese train ride experience, not only regarding punctuality but especially as far as ease of ticket purchase and customer service are concerned.
Hello🙂Sayaka.. You didn’t look at your seat assignment close enough?!?.. perhaps you were “not” wearing your 👓 glasses?!?.. 🤓😂 Your drink looked delicious by the way! Cold coffee maybe? 😋 What happened to your left hand?… It looks like a big bruise on your wrist area! 😳 Time for a very late dinner and a shower. Long day at work today. Bye for now and have a Fantastic day/night, Sayaka!! 🇺🇸🙂💚💚💚🙂🇯🇵
I was in Tokyo for holidays 10 years ago, back when it was still under construction and coming back to live here 7 years ago and seeing the new station was mind blowing.
Loved your video and shorts Sayaka-san. it helps me a lot when i was in Japan last 2 weeks. Just to share, i took the shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo and got Shinkansen tickets online via Klook, the ticket can only be redeem via Kiosk and counter personal will only say "these ticket are not issued here". 2 tickets was provided to me and i need both tickets to reach the platform. basically i have to go thru 2 ticket gates. which was rather confusing as somehow my Entry gate is not the Shinkansen entry gate next to the shinkansen ticket counter but another entry gate that lead to Shinkansen gate. have to ask conductor few times with limited Japanese ending up with Masugu, Migi and Hidari to guide the way. Next plan is to take up Japanese classes
Hi Sakaya. from listening to your conversation. I too make error. I thought he meant front car 1 because of large suitcase. also I too was late several times for train and jump into any cart and walk to seat. Dont feel embarrassed many make errors as well. You didnt hold up train and make late. Thus all is good.
I was there 8 days ago, bought a ticket and took the 6:40 train to Shinagawa 😂 I always try my best to be there at least 40 mins before my train arrives (with all my stuff and done with omiyage hunting) to make sure I’m in the right spot and avoid those embarrassing situations 😆 Although on my way to Nagoya from Kyoto, I initially thought of shipping my luggage so I don’t travel with it but changed my mind.. and when I bought the ticket, I didn’t realise I need to reserve an oversized luggage seat 😢 I was already in the queue waiting for my train when I read about it. So I ended up not seating in my reserved seat and just standing in between cars with my stuff.. good thing Kyoto - Nagoya is just 1 station but 40mins travel time 😅 So I made sure I didn’t make the same mistake travelling from Nagoya to Shinagawa which is a 1.5 hr ride 😁
the wrong seat part is funny. Such a Japanese issue when on the other hand the German Train network and everything is so bad, so that I personally would only order a seat in the web to avoid the one time chance to get a bad employee and also if preferred and worth the difference, choose the cheapest route because here we do have raised prices when an ICE train goes through high traffic areas, whereas going around it and with multiple single tickets from one big hub to another one will make us save money. I think there is even a good internet website from some Germans who have gathered all routes to maximize the savings from not choosing a single ticket to the destination but multiple, because convenience costs more.
Your japanese is so clear to understand! I'm still learning and you help me a lot so arigatou gosaimasu!
I’m glad to hear that! Thank you for studying with me :)
its arigatou gazaimasu lol
@@shreksoffspring hahahaha thanks for the correction! I'll keep that in mind
@@shreksoffspring*gozaimasu
And pronounced Arigato Gozaimas

I´m somewhat relieved to see that travelling by train is not only difficult for us stupid foreigners, but also locals sometimes struggle with it.
I was going from Shin-Yokohama to Kyoto on the Shinkansen and I got on the wrong train, since it departed 2min before my train where I had a seat reservation for. So it was the Kodama instead of the Hikari, which was way slower 😄

nothing better than sitting in the shinkansen and having a nice bento

There is a typo in the subtitle at 1:30. 所容時間 has to be 所要時間.
At 2:07 he said ご入用ですか rather than ご利用ですか and it's not a typo tho...
