Echt wundervoll!
Standing ovationaly! Bravo! This performance is exquisite and incomparable. Mravinskys dazzling appearance and a lonly countenance that does not let anything go away easily is awesome , wonderful.
The composer said: "The song is the most important thing." This is about as tuneful, magic and Russian as anything. He just gets better with time. And the maestro has his band cooking. Kudos incontrario for this.
Ah, Mravinskij and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra! Simply the best performers of Russian composers' music! They embody Russian music. they are the only ones, who have a real emotional connection to this music. I simply adore them!
@@thisIsVasilius The country was called Russia when Prokofiev was born, so it's quite correct to refer to 'Russian composers' music, even though this particular score was written during the nightmare of the Soviet thirties.
Mravinsky was an athoritative genius of the orchestral conducting. Here, we can hear his performance when conducting the suite from "Roméo and Julet" of his compatriot Prokofiev. *

The conduct of Mravinsky has the thing which a boodcurdling sight approaches. His conduct overwhelm the person listening to the music that Mravinsky conducts. The conductor surpassing Mravinsky other than Mravinsky does not exist in the world !
At 0:23 and 1:07 the strings sound too much pianissimo, almost inaudible. In other performances the conductors enhance these beautiful harmonies that contrast with the dissonant fortissimi of metals.
It is very Russian. Full-blooded. The recordings if this era were not too great, although you can tell that the players were very good. I have the feeling that, if this were a ballet performance, that the tempi would be a little more moderate. The orchestra has to follow the dancers. This marvelous music should not be rushed - the same as any other. A powerful performance, but not very subtle!
The woodwinds & brass are totally out of tuning... This is not Mravinsky's fault, but this is the reality...There is not any reason to leave the celesta, saxophone and trombones play out of tune... Sorry...
+Jordan Sheppherd Not only... This is not a critic for the genius Mravinsky, it's a problem of the players at all ! Yes, the main theme is a big compromise...
Well, there is some weirdness in the intonation here and there, but they are certainly not "totally" out of tune. Not enough to spoil an otherwise compelling performance for me. I wonder if it could possibly have anything to do with Soviet era wind instruments? Maybe not, but it might be interesting to research. Mravinsky achieves great precision, clarity of orchestral textures, and searing emotional intensity.
This composition is so thoroughly Russian, of the story's English author and Italian setting there is no hint. The music suggests the sorrows and horrors of Stalin's Soviet Union, with which Prokofiev was all too well acquainted.
I have a purely rhetorical question, what do people smoke or drink if instead of the image of a young Juliet and Romeo, they see the ghost of communism and a mustachioed Stalin?

Soviet, not Russian...
Second best. NObody ranks ahead of Kondrashin, especially on Shostakovich.

15:09 for my monthly visit to this recording
There is something so mysterious in this music and this interpretation.. And also something dreadful.
Waiting for the Smiths to begin playing.

"With regret ... you're fired!"
Isn't this "op.64ter" not "op.64bis"? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romeo_and_Juliet_(Prokofiev)#Orchestral_suites_extracted_from_Romeo_and_Juliet
+Raitis V Indeed!!! op.64 is the ballet, op.64bis the first suite, and op.64ter, the second suite... this one!

Amazing recording! But why no 4th movement?
There's no such movement. Every conductor is free to make up his own selection of numbers from this great score.
