It’s mostly a tune that made the difference not the intercooler. You plug that adapter under your dashboard and it changes the boss levels and stuff in your ecu. Honda uses something like that called hondata and another one called ktuner. Anyway….. the intercooler does nothing really but cool the air.

And maybe the stage three?!! 😃 I think the Explorer ST is SO UNDERRATED! After doing a lot of research, it shows how easily simple upgrades to the ST can easily beat mustangs, SRT SCATPACK, camaros, ect...AND with a little more upgrade, these ST sleepers can at least "hang with" and even beat the trackhawk and hellcats! The biggest difference on any of these ecoboost engines is getting the air out not more air in. Intercooler is for consistent runs. The tune made this what it is.
On a hot day In Indiana in my focus st you could definitely feel the car get slower after warming up. Not with a bigger intercooler. The focus notoriously has a small stock one though, hopefully this ones is better
You could save a lot of money with just maximizing the tune, as you say. ford has to be a bit conservative on tune, as they have a warranty costs to protect for.
Good gains....but the tittle was a bit misleading for me, i was looking for the roots type supercharger to be bolted on making it a compound boosted system.
So I have a 22 X5 M50i and did a stage 1 93 octane dahler chip tune and went from 4 seconds 0-60 to 3.4 seconds 0-60. It was super easy to install and cost me $2156 including tax.

The stock intercooler on the Explorer ST is about the the same size as the factory intercooler I had on my MINI Cooper S with a 1.6L 4 cyl. I can’t believe how undersized it is for such a large SUV!
your comparing apples to oranges; engineers design to dozens of objectives , engine/trans life, mileage, driveability , noise , cost , weight, to name just a few, comparing a very small car to a family SUV probably was not on their list of objectives for buyers of Explorers.

@@GolE2839 No, usually not unless you know of a particular dealership (usually in FL, GA, NC, or MI) who might do work like this. But Ford HQ just doesn't do or sanction things like this; and with everyone going electric, this kind of work is probably on the way out.
Per my dealership. When you add a supercharger or even tune your vehicle. Your warranty will be voided unless approved and installed by a factory dealership. I tried to find a Local Tuner in my area to replace my locked ECU with no luck. I was told by local tuners they are moving away from tuning street cars due to the emission tests the state requires. The concern is a failed test can lead back to the tuner for removing or changing the factory emissions requirements.
The factory intercooler was sized the way it was for a reason, the the A/C condenser was unobstructed. Although you'll be making more power, the A/C performance will suffer a bit.
It's a shame you can't just do with the Explorer the same as you can with the other ST cars, and just buy an accessport, modify how you see fit, and get custom tunes to match.

He hit it on the head at the end. 5000 lbs-no brake upgrades and the brakes are not really up to performance driving levels. So, when a person in a Focus pulls out of the gas station as you launch this thing from a light it doesn't have the brakes to haul it down faster too. Performance cars should not be just one trick ponies-looking at you Tesla. Fast is great, stopping and handling have to be part of the package to make it safe though.
Did you also add the custom tune with 93 Octane? How much extra horsepower do you think you added I'm also adding the AFE cold Air intake and borla cat back exhaust
The tune we used is what Whipple includes in this kit, which is good for 91 octane or up. They state the calibration adds +120ft-lbs of torque and +60HP.
Does it work with FPIU (police explorer) second gen with 3.0 twin-turbo engine (400 hp in stock)? And is installation of this feature need to upgrade tiny transmission, CV joints, brakes, etc.? I know a good rule - if you're tuned you car to ride faster - don't forget about brakes!

That's why I was asking. I'm looking to get this intercooler for my ST but I will probably snag a custom ethanol tune instead of the calibration module.

this obviously would void your OEM warranty for powertrain issues; did Whipple do any severe duty cycle testing (such as summer temp. max. vehicle a max. load trailer towing on extended hill climbs ( like OEM's do). for engine cooling and A/C performance ? airflow to these heat exchangers behind the new intercooler would be affected. and may be how the powertrain engineers determined what size intercooler they could allow in the factory design. Just something to think about on additions that still does not make a vehicle this heavy a street performance car.

I found if you put it in manual mode and short shift 2nd gear at about 2k rpms that kick when it hits 3rd will lower your 0-60.
If you can manually shift it and achieve quicker ETs, then your tune is trash!
This is also how you destroy the trans on these things from what I've seen on TH-cam.

5 Star Tuning makes one. On a stock Explorer St tune only, dyno'd at 415 rwhp and 526 lbft torque. a hell of a lot cheaper too.

We've test fit our own Steeda intercooler on a Police Interceptor Explorer and the transmission cooler was in the way.

I think you can pull a fuse for the pto/ptu and make it front wheel only to run on the Dyno.

brake boost works better with awd setups. most of the time in fwd and rwd will just spin hard
