  • Today we dive into English rock band BLUR. "Parklife" is the title track and third single from their third studio album PARKLIFE released in August 1994. It reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart and number 30 in Ireland. The song features spoken word in the verses, narrated by actor Phil Daniels.

I'd say Britpop was the explosion of guitar bands with 60s influences that appeared early to mid 90s. Oasis had a very definate Beatles Influence. Others I'd include were Suede (very Bowie and glammy. My favourites who i think started the movement off but thats my opinion!), Pulp, Elastica, Dodgy, Cast, Sleeper, Echobelly, Shed Seven, Supergrass....so many! Was a very exciting time here in the UK after the darkness of the grunge years and the early 90s dance stuff (both of which I also enjoyed!)

I love Blur. This reminds me of Lazy Sunday Afternoon by Small Faces, another great British band from the 60s.

As a young American in the early 90s, Blur were a breath of fresh air.

Oasis is definitely Britpop, NOT grunge by any stretch of the imagination. Kudos to you guys for choosing this song which is my favorite Blur song and I can’t recall seeing anyone else reacting to this before. I love the “Britishness” of this track. You guys need to check out Stone Roses, The Farm, Inspiral Carpets, Utah Saints, Adamski, just to name other acts from around this period. Inspiral Carpets and Stone Roses in particular. This period was so much more creative in the U.K. than in the U.S. IMO

I agree with you there 😎 much more creative and interesting music in the UK 🇬🇧 back in the 90's ... I'd take Oasis and Blur over Creed and Weezer any day 😁

"pop" music is and always has referred to "popular music" "Britpop" is literally just British popular music, generally a term only used to describe bands from the early to late 90s though. Blur, Oasis, Pulp and Suede are probably the most well known bands who have their roots in Britpop.

A genius stroke to bring in Phil Daniels - still so easily recognised as the lead in the 1979 classic mods movie Quadrophenia" 😊

  • @cyclops60

Off topic but a young Phil Daniels played the lead character, Jimmy, in the 1979 movie Quadrophenia (an album by the Who) based in 60's Britain in the era of mods and rockers (Sting of the Police also appears!) Great album to be enjoyed as a whole. '5.15' and 'Love reign O'er me' are probably the stand out tracks if you fancy a listen!

Nice video! Since you already did Parklife album I recommend you to do songs from their album "13", could be Bugman and Caramel. Trust me, you wouldn't believe those songs are also theirs.

Britpop was more of the culture of the time than an actual musical genre, which is why many of the bands like Oasis, Blur and Suede didn't really sound the same. It came about as a fight against grunge music as more happy and positive kind of tone.

The video was made in Bradyll street in Greenwich. A lot of the other scenes were filmed in Greenwich , what is now known as NORTH GREENWICH and has been demolished long ago.

What did make a a little differerence between Blur and Oasis, at that time: Blur was alot more self-deprecating.

Thinking back, in retrospective - Blur really weren't any category. At the time sure they were. But now, I think they were just being "Blur". When you mentioned "defining their image to them" I think that was hitting the nail on the head. Early work (1990-94) like "There's No Other Way" and "Girls & Boys" could be categorised as "Britpop", but is still uniquely a Blur sound. Then "The Universal" (1995) happened and this was a beginning of an end for them. More edgier more purely punk/indie. Even so, great songs like "Tender" and "Song 2" happened in their latter half. Damon was always the driving force imo. It felt like he was the most rebellious mind of the band, maybe that was how he got to Gorillaz ? Not sure. When you think of Blur this way... compared to say Oasis who were pure Britpop, they were just ... Blur 😁

Blur was a lot more fun that Oasis - Oasis probably had better songs at their peak but Blur ultimately had more variety and depth.

This song was huge back in the day, so catchy and fun. Interesting that you appreciate the humour in this and not so much in Madness! I see so much similarity. Blur and Oasis dispute that there was anomosity between the bands and that was a beat up by the media, either way it did seem you were either one or the other. I appreciated Oasis but got Blur!

    • @reactionextraction

Blur and Oasis respect each other and are friends, but Blur did deliberately choose to release their single on the same day as Oasis, then Oasis moved the release date so they wouldn't clash and Blur moved it to match again. 😂 So Blur were definitely fucking around with Oasis a bit. It was great publicity for both bands though!

Oasis were all macho posturing. Blur and Damon in particular had a lot more attitude and had that snarky witticism. Oasis were too far up their own arse for my liking, Blur could write some epic, meaningful poetic songs but they also knew how to have a laugh.
