Karen Carpenter was one of the greatest female vocalist of all times, beautiful amazing voice no auto-tune no back woods tricks just straight up talent.
She was voted drummer of the year in 1975 in a poll from Playboy Magazine which pissed off Jon Bonham of Led Zepplin as he placed behind her in the poll.
I put this comment as a reply to the first comment so that you ('Rome Life Reactions') will see it. If you think this song is beautiful, you also must hear 'Yesterday Once More' and 'Won't Last a Day Without You,' both by the Carpenters, as well.
Richard Carpenter really was an amazing musical arranger. It really is the details, the instruments he uses and how and where they come in and out, how they interact with Karen's voice, the harmonizing, it all comes together and creates this feeling that's hard to describe.
Fifty years later and this still brings a tear. Beautiful lady with a beautiful voice singing a beautiful song. Lots of memories for me. My favourite Carpenters song too.
Karen had a voice like warm caramel...like an 👼! The harmonies and arrangements by her brother Richard were killer. Their music really holds up well, yes?
When my brother was a baby he was a blond haired, blue eyed smiler. This was the song my mom sang to him all the time (so I'm told cuz he's 2 years older). We were also both born overseas and our fair complexions attracted a lot of attention, so, yeah, "all the girls in town". :D
I tell people it's dumb to be pigeonholed by one genre of music, to much GREAT music over the decades, I went and saw KISS in 2000 and Taylor Swift in 2018, her show was better. As was the music. When this song came out, I was pregnant and they were playing it at a store I was in. I got so emotional I started crying and everyone was asking me if I was OK LOL
I appreciate, so much, your take on the older music. And that you are so completely thorough in your analysis. Most of all, I'm so glad to see a younger generation hear it for the first time, and see that they like it as much as we did, when we first discovered it. GREAT reaction!
This is my favorite Carpenters’ song, too. Your reaction spoke directly to the love I’ve had for this song since I first heard it when I was 8 years old! And “that is why”...I pressed the “subscribe” button. Thx for helping those of us who grew up in the 70’s to relive the best music from that time.
This is why I'm enjoying your channel! I could be wrong, but I think if you had listened to this when you first started you may not have noticed a lot of those little details that make this so beautiful. I could be wrong. But it seems to me like you're really picking up on some of those little subtleties that make some of this 70s stuff so great. As a music teacher, I love seeing your attention to detail and understanding increase, allowing for appreciation of new things, and I've always loved your open-mindedness. Keep it up! I'm enjoying your videos!
Seventies subtleties .... and the creative curve balls that could come at any point in the song.... has it all gone away? Seventies Rock💥 .... as a kid I just thought that's how it was supposed to be...
Young brother I wish you had to be there. Her voice was steering angelic and even today touched places today’s artist just can’t ask your folks they remember. It was number one on billboard in 1970 and I believe it won the Grammy for song of the year while bridge over troubled waters was record of the year. A giant amongst number ones
Song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Bacharach loved putting horns in his arrangements. They wrote songs for Dionne Warwick such as "Walk on By", "Anyone Who Had a Heart", "Alfie", "I Say a Little Prayer", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", and "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?"
Karen Carpenter had one of the most beautiful voices in the music industry. it was soft it was gentle and yet could sound very sexy at the same time. If you decide to do a Christmas edition and feature Christmas songs which might not be a bad idea, you have to check out their Christmas album. There are songs on there that are almost here inducing as beautifully as she sings especially my favorite, Little Altar Boy
I like this guy immensely, we all have a lot to learn about everything. Knowing that the Carpenters were very talented is an understatement. I love that voice that has never and mean ever been equaled.
One of the greatest female voices ever. And her brother was a great arranger. Songwriters are the legendary Burt Bacharach and Hall David (Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," and the trumpet part you love is defininetly a Burt Bacharach touch. Very influential songwriter and arranger of the sixties and seventies.
Karen had a beautiful voice and one could always understand the lyrics when she sang, which allowed one to relax and enjoy the musical story. Sings like a melancholy angel. Beautiful.
I feel so great you like this song so much! I’ve loved the Carpenters since I was a child, and even though my musical journey in life took me in so many amazing directions through the 70’s, 80’s and beyond, I never fell out of love with Karen, Richard and this incredible group!
Looks like you've already reacted to quite a few. Some more suggestions: Yesterday Once More Top of the World ( a country hit ) Ticket to Ride ( Beatles cover ) Some male singers similar to Karen: John Denver - Annie's Song, Leaving on a Jet Plane, Fly Away, Sunshine on my Shoulders, James Taylor: Fire and Rain, You can Close Your Eyes, You've Got a Friend Gordon Lightfoot: Early Morning Rain, If You Could Read My Mind
Another male singer worth mentioning, though he's a bit more middle-of-the-road musically, is Andy Williams ("Solitaire", "Moon River"). Possibly the only singer with as smooth a voice as Karen C.
@@jamesdignanmusic2765 I've seen it. Im 53 and remember watching her on tv shows all the time. Sadly i battled the same disease she did shortly after she passed - but mine was medical. Took another surgery to stop it
hey man i'm new to your channel. That was an awesome reaction lol ,, Carpenters are my generation late 60's to 70s and i love this song to. Ive never seen u before and quite frankly wasn't expecting that open-minded reaction from you from this oldie but goodie. Good Job! i'm a subscriber now!
your reaction was simply awesome, I love their early material and this particular one has always been my favorite, it really seems her voice was a gift from God -after all these years it's still so beautiful it will make you cry, I'm sure this particular characteristic will 'always' be the case
This song will forever choke me up. My mother used to sing it to me every night when she put me to bed when I was little, and conversely I sang it to her in her hospital room right before she took her last breath when she died of cancer.

No one mentions one of my favorite Carpenters songs, Sing (a Song). By the way, in 1975, Playboy magazine ranked Karen Carpenter the best drummer of the year, ahead of John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. He wasn't happy. Be sure to check out The Charlie Daniels Band-The Devil Went Down to Georgia.
This song was their first big hit. It was summer of 70. I was going into the 11th grade. Even at that young age I knew that Karen’s voice was incredibly beautiful, and that Richard’s writing and arranging were top flight. ......suggest you do Goodbye to Love by The Carpenters. A sad but beautiful song, which has a knockout guitar solo in it. Thank you for this video and reaction.
Great song and reaction and so many more to come. Could you do "I don't know how to love him" by Helen Reddy, she passed away a couple of days ago, Thank you
We love you, too! Your reactions are real, that's for sure. If this was the first time I was hearing this, this would be my reaction as well, same. Strangely this song had been covered by several artists before The Carpenters but barely made a blip on the music charts. In the hands of The Carpenters, Karen's compelling vocals, and the arrangement sensibilities of her brother Richard, it went rightfully straight to the top of the charts. You knew the first time you heard it that this was going to be the big song of the year.

She had the most beautiful, pure voice, and she was great on the drums! Loved watching her sing while she was drumming!
Especially in a 1968 live performance of Dancing In The Street. She sang and owned those drums. It blew me away.

Yes often Richard Carpenter is not mention. But the two made this magic. Brother and sister.

There's something about the Carpenters that just captures people's hearts. Karen's voice, Richard's arrangements... They can't be denied!
