There is a fundamental misunderstanding in the Penguin vs Acolyte argument. I'm starting to think John doesn't understand what the numbers are. Penguins was USA only and Acolytes was worldwide. That is an extremely important distinction
From the deadline article, "In the U.S., the series debut of the HBO Original averaged 5.3 million cross platform U.S. viewers over its weekend debut. The Matt Reeves series dropped first on Max before premiering Sunday on HBO".
John - Apples to Apples comparisons are critical. WBD discloses viewership for US only (which includes linear HBO + Max Streaming). That is where the ~ 5.4 million figure is coming from, Disney+ disclosed the ~ 11 million was a global number.
you're missing a bit of key info....'week 1' for the Acolyte was the first two episodes. The ratings are fot both episodes combined- worldwide over 5 days. The penguin is only the first episode and America only viewing figures.
PLUS, the Acolyte number of 180M was in British Pounds. The US Dollar amount turns out was actually $230MM!!! They spent almost a quarter of a billion dollars to make one season of Acolyte that no one finished. My question is this... who stole $50-100MM from that production and hid it in an offshore account?
This is a weird comparison. They’re two totally different tones. Unless Gotham or another Batman name is mentioned The Penguin doesn’t even feel like a show in the Batman universe. This could just be a show about a gimpy low level soldier, climbing the ranks of the mob. Where as acolyte is meant for hardcore SW that didn’t deliver.
I watched Penguin because John was raving about it. After I watched it I texted my Dad and told him that it was his kind of show and that he has to check it out. I agree with John, I think word of mouth is going to make the viewership go up.
Because “The Batman” started with it’s own unique take on the Batman mythos from the beginnigWhereas the “The Acolyte” tried to change too much about the existing Star Wars mythos.

It's very simple why the Penguin did well, and The Acolyte flopped. The Penguin has advantages that the Acolyte does not. First, the Penguin based on an iconic villain (not a C-list villian) while The Acolyte is based on the original characters and an era of Star Wars that most of general public aren't familiar with, so the Penguin will most likely keep the audience attention moving forward unlike The Acolyte. As for the budget, from what I know movie budgets is not the same as TV budget. Just because they spent 180 million dollars doesn't mean they spent that much on every single episode. Also, the Penguin is a street-level character so obviously they spent less money on that then a space opera. Furthermore, I don't buy that it's the quality of the show is the reason The Acolyte flopped because people weren't watching so how would know it's flop if nobody cared to tune. Andor received less viewership than even the Acolyte, and that is consider the best of modern Star Wars, yet no one cared to watch it.
Just started this, but John owes it to his audience to finish the Acolyte, and hopefully incorporate the new reports that it actually cost OVER $230,000,000 with recent tax filing, likely higher since it only went to end of 2023 and post production wasn't complete
UK Tax returns say acolyte cost $230 million to make, also, LucasFilm is in a coffin of their own making: they have a dark side of the fan base that will actively hate everything they do. Penguin does not have any such baggage.
