The Punto MK1 is one of the most beautiful supermini ever made, still very fresh design. Cannot believe that was almost introduced on the market 30 years ago. And all thanks to the genius of Giorgetto Giugiaro.
@@ItaliaAutos Just few weeks ago, I saw a in London a Fiat Punto MK1 dark green, I would say top of the range. It was rather beautiful and despite been almost 30 years old,(design) it looked the part compare to more recent design. I love them too.
I'm really enjoying this Punto series, i was surprised how smooth it ran when you got it going. Whichever one you choose to restore of the 2 I'm sure it will be fantastic when it's finished.
Some memories for me. I had 3 GT’s back in the day, all the variants GT1, GT2 and the GT3, I’m in Ireland so these were absolute gold dust here, I had an RPM sensor issue with my GT2 and I remember bringing it to Fiat themselves and some of the lads there they’d never seen one before. My GT1 started out as a 55, GT2 was Irish and GT3 was from UK, came in in 2009 but unfortunately it had too many years of salt roads
Ran so differently with brake cleaner then reverted back to running smoothly. I'd tell you what i'd not seen in years. A Yellow Fiat 20v coupe. They still look good today.
The wheels are most likely Team Dynamics, possibly Motorsport iirc. They originally came with centre caps that were available in three different designs - flush/split pin/nut. If they’re TD wheels they were secured by a little screw locating somewhere around the wheel nuts. I had Team Dynamics Monzas on my Punto GT. its the one car i desperately want again.
Broom Yellow is one of the best colours Fiat ever did! Perhaps not in the multi-stage fading in this case :) Really enjoying the MK1 Punto series. Fond memories of mine! Wish we could have seen the recovery
The first new car I bought. Loved the way they looked, I had a 55 but all the bits and lowered springs to make it look like a GT, all show and no go! Puntograle was another very cool car. I owned a few integrales and still have an Evo2 tucked away, I think the Punto should have been produced as the integrale successor.
Proper result that! There was a Mk1 GT nicked from near me (outer north London) last year, but a guy in an all red flatbed Mk5/6 Transit. It was yellow & primer as it was being restored, if anyone's been offered it.. The same bloke also nicked a French registered LHD Clio & possibly a light blue Alfa 145 (W766LEL)..
I got a free Alfa once. Well it was advertised free but I still wanted to give him something so I gave him $80AUD. Driving, stopping, ac working 156 sedan. Power steering had issues. I parted it out and still have many many parts downstairs. I'm a bit slow on listing parts, but the idea is to sell parts cheap to help keep these cars on the road.
Great find. It would have been nice to see this one back on the road but it's reassuring to hear that it's sacrifice will mean that another MK1 Punto can live on.
Loved my mk1 Punto 60SX. I bought brand new in 1998, sold in 2005. Oddly, it's been sorned since 2012.. Had Morette headlamps and a Hormann front splitter, tinted windows, half tinted rear lights, twin 3" back box, GSR induction kit and the full GT centre console, the car was in Azzurro Rialto blue. Last known location in Manchester, would love to know it's whereabouts now😎.
My mum had a punto sporting marks1 .1999 in this wierd colour.matalic turquoise. It was quick and agile. And used to beat many cars with bigger engine. Then i had punto mk 2 2002.in blue.fitted abarth body kit roof spoiler and free flow exhaust with twin pipes through the middle of the rear bumper and smaller cat and uprated suspension sorted ont the bouncy ride.104.bhp .0 two 62 in 9.2 seconds. Top end 115mph.not bad from a 12.50 6speed engine.
That didn't sound bad at all when it went! It looks like this might be a better chassis to build from too? The other car might be better suited as the donor. I guess it depends how much time you've invested repairing the other one.
@@ItaliaAutos putting MK1 Puntos back on the road was my bread and butter, was an inside joke with the MOT tester where he would write down on the MOT fail sheet "rear radius arms" before he even started, 9/10 it did fail on the damned things.
Neil I'm sure you don't need me to tell you this but this new shell seem a lot better than the the one your restoring it's by no means perfect but it doesn't look any where near so rusty or is that just me ??
You can’t kill an old Fiat! You didn’t give it much chance without some fresh fuel. Poor old girl was choking on that old fuel. Those 3 bright red exterior badges tell me that was garaged for most of it’s life, and it looks like you’ve got a great parts car 😀
Interesting thing the 1.2 liter Punto and above for some reason have longer 5-th gears than my uncle's BMW 318i or my neighbour's Audi A4 1.8. I wonder if i can take the gearbox from a scrapped Punto and adapt it to another car, cuz the way even newer Opel/Vauxhalls, Fords, BMW's, VW's, Renault's and Toyota's have such short 5-th gears that reach 3000rpm already at 100km/60mph is ridiculous - especially since they have more powerfull engines.
I have 2005 1.4 Corolla VVTi with a short 5th gear and above 60mph it screams. You could probably make the Punto box fit with a bit of work. For me i'm thinking of getting the longer 5th gear from a Corolla D4D to bring the revs down.
At the time I had a Fiat Uno 55, a mate of mine bought a new Fiat Punto, I was shocked at how much of an improvement it was from the Uno, little wonder they sold like hot cakes.
Do all cars of this era rust this badly, or is this more of an issue with Fiat? I had a Plymouth back in the early 1980s, frame completely rusted out after 7 winters on salty Ohio roads!
I must admit, it's a crying shame that both mk1s can't be saved. It's sad how rare mk1 and pre-facelift mk2 Puntos are nowadays; such fantastic designs, likewise the Grande Punto. I've had my 2008 Eleganza nigh on 8 years now, and I hope to keep it as long as I can.
Uh Oh! I hope this doesn't turn into yet another Punto which MUST be saved. You do however not yet answer the million dollar question from the previous video: How about the rust / chassis integrity problems with your own car?

Again the great one. A love the yellow color off the car. I have Punto Mk3 1.4 16 v sporting 2004 and it is yellow.
The Mark II was a good car just a lost a little bit of its charm

nope orange one is the survivor.
Hi Neil! Great video. Did I see a green/silver 146 in the background?! It’s reg wouldn’t end in LNS, would it? Looks a lot like my dads old car
