@@StudioAlexOfficial Unlike Adventure Time, though, Bo-Bobo doesn’t take itself serious, even if there’s a motivation on what they have to go through. Plus, there’s no character assassination, because Bo-Bobo and the gang know they’re in a surrealist manga, and are having fun with the idea. One more thing: Don Patch is suppose to look like an Orange Sun, and yet in the translated Manga by Viz Media, they translated his name to Poppa Rocks… why they would want to name him that, I have no idea.
The narrator often lied about the recaps of previous episodes as well. As well as lots of meta humor about the production, and IIRC even a multi-episode argument about when the announcer's vacation was supposed to be.
@@StudioAlexOfficial Imagine seeing Bo-BoBo in a Death Battle; his toon force (which includes refusing to die) would be one of the strongest elements in winning the fight.
If there's any life message in Bobobo, it's to not to take yourself too seriously and learn to laugh and smile more often. Life is too short to focus on constant negatives that happen. Especially when it can negatively affect others around you. As Allen Alda once said "If we all don't go crazy every once in a while, we'll all go crazy." But that's just my take on it. Rereading this, this sounds like I'm saying "Lighten the (car horn noise) up and go (insert Wilhelm Scream here) nuts every once in a while!"
Also the best joke in the show is the narrator recapping an early episode and then gasping because the replay of soften doing a spin kick actually hit the narrator, winding him. THAT is how you break the fourth wall.
Bobobo is actually incredibly intelligent in battle and in every way, he mostly just goofs off because that's where he derives his ability to wig out his most powerful ability

11:52-13:27 this is perhaps the most concise and clear explanation of the difficulties with Anime Dubs I've ever run across and I wish more of the Sub shall we say "Purists" could realise this. This of course does not excuse the mindnumbingly dumb/wierd script choices 4kids have done (and they should forever be used as an example of what NOT to do in that arena, like the infamous "Jelly Doughnut" meme).
When you absolutely, positively, MUST have complete incomprehensible randomness and brainsplosions, this show... hands down, and if not this then Arakawa Under The Bridge. CAUSE NEITHER SERIES MAKES ANY GODDAMN SENSE!!!
Your talking points on this leads me to believe that you'd probably really enjoy Cromartie Highschool if you hadn't seen that. Its another show that plays around with anime tropes, has a ludicrously great English dub, and has a ton of visual gags throughout it. One of my favorite gags with the show was something I didn't even notice until re-watching where one of the main cast members who is a part of the group who shows up later in the series, actually has a speaking point in episode 1-2 episodes before he's introduced. You wouldn't realize that he's not supposed to even be there since its fairly early in the show and you don't know all the characters that well, but he's just randomly there for a single scene to give a comment on something like he's already a well established member of the group.
I once almost choked laughing when Don patch was guessing "Big egg!, Big egg!' in some sort of gameshow episode they did. I had to clean up afterwards LMAO
Visual storytelling while very difficult to pull off, if it's done right, can make a scene so much stronger and much more unforgettable. One perfect example of this is from Arcane: League of Legends, specifically the fight scene between Echo and Jinx, while it was short, it detailed so much about each character, their journey, their feelings for one another, both good and bad. That scene, much like the show, was a masterpiece. It had absolutely no dialogue, but so much was conveyed to the viewer. If you haven't, please go watch Arcane. I was always holding off on watching it because the game wasn't to my liking, but the show is a gem in my book. Amazing characters all across the board, all giving just the right amount of love. Go watch it!
So what happened with the Manga is that Viz decided to keep going where they had stopped with the US Shonen Jump Magazine releases. They also decided to restart the volume and chapter numbering. Viz "volume 1, chapter 1" is actually Volume 11, chapter 110. It's absolutely deranged that they did this, and really showed just how little Viz gave a fuck at the time. The only way to have a physical copy of the earlier Bobobo chapters is to collect the monthly magazine.
When this popped up in recommended I had to watch it. Bobobo was my favorite show when I was a kid, my mum would watch anime like dragon ball or pokemon or one piece with me, but would always be so annoyed with bobobo saying "it's too weird", which is funny cause that's exactly why it's great
Don Patch's transformations are next level. Bo-bobo's wigging out was so chaotic it wasn't as funny as often you can't subvert an expectation when there is no expectation. Of course they had the funniest moments where they subverted the expectation of subverting expectation when they were ripping on tropes and the joke was that it was way too on the nose hat on a hat shonen Don Patch was the best at that. Professional Patch hits the beats just right he has all the tryhard 3cool5school super serious lines "you must focus only on the enemy nothing else matters" then he just gets unceremoniously tossed. He also repped some of the most fluid localization rewrites when he transforms into stereotypical meiji thug visually he's doing his lines like Marlon Brando as Vito. I was the only person I knew that watched it when it was broadcasting on Toonami 10 yo me didn't appreciate a lot of the nuanced cultural motif jokes and I doubt many kids would today let alone before watching anime was normalized. I can understand why people would not think they would like it at many times they can walk on their own punchlines but I think if someone can get themselves to stick with it and adjust to the different rhythm of most different culture's humor they'll get into it provided the adaptation isn't trash. I mean Yankees like myself and Brits like not myself as similar as the humor is comparitively to language barrier humor differences it still isn't quite the same and takes some getting used to. Bobobo-bo bo-bobo is definitely slept on way more anglophones would enjoy it than those who already do but on the whole just generalizing the culture shock is too great I couldn't recommend it to most people.
God, I saw Bobobo when I was a kid during it's CN airing, and thought it was hilarious. My parents didn't get it. I loved it though and really need to go back and watch it again because I only remember like a couple of scenes. One where he's whipping someone with seaweed just saying "Seaweed" repeatedly, and another where the gang is in this spirit board game thing, and Bobobo's spirit representation piece is a piece of toast with his face.
12:35 I took a class in German and that's one of the very first things I picked up on. You need to take liberty when translating words or you'll end up with the English translation of Zero Wing or "All Your Base Are Belong To Us." Translations is something of an art form that require bending or breaking the rules of both languages.
I was around 6 or 7 years old when I first saw this show. And I peed myself crying from the first episode. My parents were still together then. Ah good times.
i love absurdity and amount of references in one fight they get serious for 10 seconds and bobobo appears behind enemy like any shonen anime ans says "too slow" music goes up, enemy get's nervous and bobobo pokes him with his knees... AND IT WORKS it's a parody done right dubbing waters down some jokes or adds one extra joke where was one effectively making both not land but it's fine
Going through this analysis, particularly the portion of "how joke-dense some scenes are," has my mind racing to Xavier: Renegade Angel. The episodes are only 15 minutes long but have so much crammed into each that other shows let me binge 3 eps of a 20-30 min. show in one sitting, no problem, but I can only experience a single XRA episode before feeling overloaded. Another honorable mention is the English Dub of "Ghost Stories," for the pop-culture references and mild fourth wall breaks.
Bobobo is one of the best anime I laugh my ass of every time time watched It. For anybody who wants the complete series you can but the blu ray on amazon for around 51 dollars kind of expensive but worth every cent. ZATCH bell would have to be my second favorite I also have the complete series blu ray for it too.
I'm spanish and I can confirm that absolutely everything you said about how the dub makes it even better applies to our dub as well, point by point, and I think the reason as to why dubs of these series are so good is not only because of talent but because the voice actors were invested after growing attached to the show as much as we were back then. The joke conversion thing is one of the aspects you mention that I learned to appreciate as I grew older too. Great, great series. PS: Tennosuke was an instant laugh for me as a kid.
5:40 I'm pretty sure is the visual representation of tsukkomi-bokke comedy, where one person is the unapologetic fool and the other is the exasperated and sane 'straight man' who interrupts (突っ込む) the fool's strange monologues
Legit this was peak back in the day. I tried to rewatch and my favorite scene will always be battle with the little White guy and it's all just who can tell a more depressing story
I loved Bo-BoBo as a kid and now. My favorite joke has to be Gasser building a wall around Softon with Captain Battleship and Beauty's reaction: "How off the wall! He's apart of the wall!! He's in the wall!!! HE'S A WALL-NUT!!!!"
I never watched a lot of this show when it was first around but I remember the little I saw quite vivdely, thanks for resurfacing my memories of this Bizarre show If you think Jojo is Bizarre you ain’t got nothing on Bobobo
Another thing about Bo-BoBo is that its comedic style is derived from manzai, a Japanese double-act comedy style. Basically, one character plays a “meathead,” and one plays a straight man. The dialogue mostly consists of misheard words and puns, which exasperates the straight man. Sometimes, the meathead is hit with a paper han called a harisen (which is seen in the anime. It’s also an item in Super Smash Bros.).
Bobobo is literally my favorite show. I think Wigouts are actually cool attacks fueled by how bizzare they are. The more bizarre the more powerful. Sometimes logic can trap you in this world... at times you need to break free of logic to succeed

"IT'S IN JAPANESE! I'll just put a fancy doodle, that oughta get noticed."
Bobobo is still the only anime that makes me laugh to the point of having a headache
bobobo is my childhood show, i love it to this day
I once almost choked laughing when Don patch was guessing "Big egg!, Big egg!' in some sort of gameshow episode they did.
Its bizarre how my generation (Gen Z) that grew up on Cartoon Network, doesn't even remember Bobobo but remember Pokemon and DBZ.
The broader message is that aliens wouldn't see a difference between our cultural conflicts and the "story" of Bobobo bo Bobobo.
Definitely one of my favorite anime from my childhood.
I LOVE BoBoBo! Thanks for the great video celebrating the insanity of this classic!
When this popped up in recommended I had to watch it. Bobobo was my favorite show when I was a kid, my mum would watch anime like dragon ball or pokemon or one piece with me, but would always be so annoyed with bobobo saying "it's too weird", which is funny cause that's exactly why it's great
I experienced the same, my mom complained both about this and gashbell
I loved this show so much as a kid and I was heart broken when I found out it wasn't finished :(
Bobobo is my favorite Chaos God.
5:06 - 10:36 This was one of the best analysis of comedy I've ever seen. That was a funny intro. Knew it was coming but still laughed.
This was on my for you page. And i loved it. This was my childhood. I agree with you completely! Bravo man!
I head When people don't know a lot of information but there is a sequel It's called Shinsetsu Bobobo Bo Bo Bobo
Great video!
Bobobo is the only anime that I have watched twice. I've never even watched single episodes more than once from other shows.
Great show
i love absurdity and amount of references
in one fight they get serious for 10 seconds and bobobo appears behind enemy like any shonen anime ans says "too slow"
music goes up, enemy get's nervous
and bobobo pokes him with his knees...
AND IT WORKS
it's a parody done right
dubbing waters down some jokes or adds one extra joke where was one effectively making both not land but it's fine
I would say that Bobobo has the message that it's okay to be silly and funny, and that you should be silly and funny.
I loved this show when I was younger I'll have to check it out again
5:40 I'm pretty sure is the visual representation of tsukkomi-bokke comedy, where one person is the unapologetic fool and the other is the exasperated and sane 'straight man' who interrupts (突っ込む) the fool's strange monologues
Legit this was peak back in the day.
I tried to rewatch and my favorite scene will always be battle with the little White guy and it's all just who can tell a more depressing story
I loved Bo-BoBo as a kid and now. My favorite joke has to be Gasser building a wall around Softon with Captain Battleship and Beauty's reaction:
"How off the wall!
He's apart of the wall!!
He's in the wall!!!
HE'S A WALL-NUT!!!!"
I blame this show for my broken humor
Lmaooo
I will always love when bobobo turns a portable ramen shop and a salary man customer into mecha armor.
I never watched a lot of this show when it was first around but I remember the little I saw quite vivdely, thanks for resurfacing my memories of this Bizarre show
If you think Jojo is Bizarre you ain’t got nothing on Bobobo
How good is Bobobo?
I was laughing while opening this video
What I learned from it is to increase your insanity and I am following it
I believe the morale of Bobobobo is sometimes it's better to not take things seriously
"Candy doesn't have to make sense... That's what makes it candy."-Charlie Bucket~Charlie and the Chocolate Factory(Tim Burton)
I'm glad to see acknowledging that this series exists and it wasn't just some glue sniffing induced fever dream from my childhood.
Bobobo: Plays Beach Volleyball
Also Bobobo: Pulls a rocket launcher out of nowhere
Literally died laughing.
I had not thought of this show in probably over a decade. I had completely forgotten that it even existed.
I always loved how bobobo is basically broken as shit, dude shits on everything and everyone without any effort.
If this series could be summed up in one word it would be madcap
Another thing about Bo-BoBo is that its comedic style is derived from manzai, a Japanese double-act comedy style. Basically, one character plays a “meathead,” and one plays a straight man. The dialogue mostly consists of misheard words and puns, which exasperates the straight man. Sometimes, the meathead is hit with a paper han called a harisen (which is seen in the anime. It’s also an item in Super Smash Bros.).
“these beans have spider webs in them” killed me 💀
Bobobo is literally my favorite show.
I think Wigouts are actually cool attacks fueled by how bizzare they are. The more bizarre the more powerful.
Sometimes logic can trap you in this world... at times you need to break free of logic to succeed
dude i loved this show as a kid and im ready for a rewatch.
This Madlad doing a Super Eyepatch Wolf parody at the end of a video essay about a parody anime.
I hate how every time i bring this show up to someone they don't know what im talking about i hope they see this vid
When I talked about this once with some friends we kept making it longer and saying more Bos anytime we said the title.
