    A brand new project to the FabCo channel, before we've even finished the first! We're taken on the Allegro after badgering Jonny for months about the Agro and we're finally making some progress.
    In this episode i work on getting the strut towers and inner wings fabricated. Its begging to look like a car now :D
    Many thanks to The Late Brake Show team for the opportunity to collaborate on this fun project!

    Great job so far, how about tack welding the hood to the fenders together with the right gaps so it can be placed on for a good fit. Once it looks good and has mounting points just cut the tack welds to free the panels.

    The whole thing is just so much fun. Thanks for the detail in the build, we love it. And on a general note, this is exactly the sort of thing I'd love to own. I've dreamed of purchasing a crashed type R, and fitting the engine, brakes and all the performance parts onto my equally battered stock 1.8 5 door Civic, adding a turbo and retaining the 'dad look' of roof box and tow bar.

    Absolutely Amazing Work, I do wonder if the Strut Top Mounting could be a tad more rigid ? And do those chassis rails go right thru to the back of the car, or will it have any kind of roll-cage internal tubing ? Great Content..

    • @FabCoUK
      @FabCoUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We’re not done yet. The will be a strut brace between the two, and a brace back to the bulkhead. There will also be an OE looking triangle brace back down to the bulkhead from the mid point 😃
      There’s plenty of stuff to go on in and under the car yet regards strengthening, I’m not too concerned about weight, given there’s a reason these cars don’t weight a lot and it’s because they have zero structure😂

Despite the advantages we have 40 years on and with 20/20 hindsight, it's always fascinating to see what might have been if these cars had been developed their to their potential.

    I was thinking after Jonny's update that creating the front part of the inner wings as part of the flip front will mean they act as a gusset between the front panel and the wings stiffening the whole thing up.

    • @FabCoUK
      @FabCoUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only problem with adding much more steel in to the front end is it’ll make it so heavy to remove. I think we’ll end up with some kind of composite inner wing😃

    Great stuff buddy. Enjoying your approach to this. Must be difficult to take on this kind of work when it’s not your own. Those decisions regarding every aspect are easier to make when you are the only person you’re satisfying! Plus when it’s your own project the financial situation changes the process massively. If your run out of cash, motivation, vision etc, work stops until the stars align again. I guess the financial aspect becomes a motivation, rather than relying purely on enthusiasm and desire to see/use the end product. Regarding the strut towers; I’d have probably notched them out with a taper rather than a hard 90 degree clearance, so there was a web left if that makes sense? Was this necessary for clearance? Not that it really matters.

    • @FabCoUK
      @FabCoUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I struggle with motivation just like most do I guess, usually it’s frustration that I can’t spend more time working on it, but then that means business is good, so it’s swings and road abouts.
      I think I probably will taper then off, when I decide exactly how I want to do it. Sometimes I have to think about stuff like that for a while 🤣

    Subscribed as I'm enjoying this, and your Princess build. You really know what you're talking about (even if you looked like a small boy next to Jonny!). A constructive criticism, maybe a bit less talking and a bit more showing us what you're doing? We all like to learn in different ways, not that I have any personal plans to try and improve the 70s British car industry.

    • @FabCoUK
      @FabCoUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Matt. I’d love to show more, and in detail, but it takes so long to film the whole process, and film it well. We may do some mini segments in the future showing all the steps, but this video for example was maybe a weeks work, condensed right down.

  • @loudsquirrel6954
    @loudsquirrel6954 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loving this build.
    Can you explain how modifying a vehicle to this extent works from a legal perspective?
    You have completely rebuilt the front end of this car.
    If a manufacturer builds a new car they have to put vehicles through NCAP testing, etc.
    Are there requirements that you have to meet to ensure the unique build you are doing meets NCAP requirements? or is this achieved through qualifications you hold and calculations you have made? or as this is a modification/one-off is it exempt from these requirements?

    • @FabCoUK
      @FabCoUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      It’s complicated. Plenty of low volume cars come with no crash testing done etc, but they are all certified through the IVA and ISO9001 process. A cad with any structural chassis mods will need to be checked by VOSA before it can be ‘legally’ put on the road, but there are probably more that don’t than do..

    How did you work out the rotation of the bolt holes in the strut tops? It's such a simple thing but so hard. I plated and redrilled my race car and spent ages measuring everything trying to get it symmetrical

      I bolted a straight edge to the two inner bolts and plumbed it down to the chassis rails/jig. Some times things like that take ages to think of how to measure and setup, when all you want to do is eye it and get it welded 😅

      @@FabCoUK I come from an industrial maintenance and farming background where fabrication and repairs were "close enough is good enough" and a measuring tape was all you needed. I know HOW to use engineers blue and scribes, micrometers and calipers and how to get things super accurate but old habits are hard to break and the race car is pretty inaccurate. Visually you can see the front legs of the roll cage aren't symmetrical. But it's good enough for me and my dirty old track car! Customers cars get more care. I can justify more time and expense when I'm getting paid for my time and skills.

    It is a mystery that a country with so many skilled car builders managed to screw up the country's car industry. Yes, I know that at least two lines in any factory went on strike at any given time, and management was recruited from the nobility calendar rather than competence, but still.

      3mm at the top, 1.5mm everywhere else more or less.
