    Happy new year. It's got to be that as you said they pulled that one off a line and finished it natural since it has such a beautiful woodgrain to it. I'd bet they periodically did that when they found guitars on the line before there was the actual custom shop. I like the top and how the backs more of the red youd typically see on a mahogany finish and they didn't put on cover plates that were some odd color.

    I think that guitar shows signs of a headstock failure - not broke yet but it will exactly where that crack has started. Most likely dropped on end in the case IMO. The finish crack is not a normal shrinkage crack, it's damage from trauma. Steer clear or pay no more than you would for a repaired headstock.

    This beautiful top was made from figured quartersawn maple.

  • @electricurinal
    @electricurinal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That checkerboard grain pattern in maple is what you get when you perfectly quarter-saw the lumber. The notebook-straight grain lines are also indicative of maple that has been perfectly quarter-sawn. A lot of wood gets wasted to get a perfectly quarter-sawn piece of lumber out of a log, so it often comes at a premium. Most maple tops (and necks) are flat-sawn. Quarter-sawn wood gives more stiffness is the string-pull direction also... as well as the stunning grain... so some necks are quartersawn maple for that reason (EJ Strat for example). Gibson necks are usually quarter-sawn mahogany to aid in stiffness, but mahogany doesn't exhibit the checkerboard grain pattern as well as maple.

    I LOVE naturals. There is a 77 Natural with a maple fretboard on Reverb right now that I wish I had the cash for badly. The selling is asking a bit too much for it at $6500 though. I know the price is due to the maple fretboard but it's not in great shape. Most of the guitar is in decent shape, but the one thing that is pushing up the value is pretty well worn.

    Did this come from a store in Philadelphia?
    Any way a couple points: the "custom shop" decal early on was used for test market and other limited runs like special order runs for certain dealers like the various LP standard models with late 50s features ordered and sold by stores like Veneman and their Music Emporium mail order division, Cintioli in Philadelphia and others starting in the late 70s.
    Your concern with finish checking is somewhat mistaken as it pretty much comes with the territory with a nitro- cellulose finish. Yes aging and sudden changes in temperature will lead to finish checking but it's cool, not a bad thing and indicates a more vintage type paint with less plastic in the nitro. My experience with cracked finishes included a 1966 NR Firebird III with beautiful checking all over and watching the finish on a 1963 Melody Maker crack before my eyes in the spring of "81 after opening the case after a long ride from MD to MI. Like watching cracks spread across a frozen pond. Unlike the current Murphy Lab finish situation, the paint on both those guitars remains attached to the instruments. No one is going to be bummed out by checking on a vintage Gibson and a '91 guitar being 30 years old has seen enough wood expansion and contraction over time to show some checking.

      Ditto Sir
      We all love guitars around here, that is what is important when we all get together like this.
      All the hate and negativity, who has time for that?
      Instead take that energy and play guitar or do something positive for others.
      Happy New Year Matthew, glad you found this channel

    A question. What is the difference between the les paul standard and les paul classic in the 90s era. Im looking to get one from the 90s and I cant find the specs between them.

    My favorite guitar and my first one. Les Paul 1992 limited colours edition in FUSCHIA. It's still my favorite Les Paul. Even after many custom shops. That's all hype. My ,92 standard in limited colours is the best one. There's no comparison from any others
