- This is episode 10 in my Dungeons and Dragons Curse of Strahd replay. In this story the group heads over Solinka Pass and explores the secrets of the Amber Temple, trying to uncover a way to defeat Strahd once and for all.
The Characters:

Garo- Wood Elf Monk Cleric
Gouda- Gnome Wild Magic Sorcerer
Boshack- Lizardfolk Warlock
Krusk- Half- Orc Paladin

Ireena- Woman that Strahd is after. We're trying to protect her.
Esmerelda- Vampire hunter. Trained by the famed Van Richten.
Ismark- Ireena's Brother.
Mordenkainen- Famous wizard who fought Strahd von Zarovitch a year ago and lost. Was in hiding.
Van Ricten- Famed vampire hunter.
Victor- Son the Baron Vallakovitch. Was making a teleportation circle in his attic, trying to escape from Barovia.

I love Boshack's reasoning. Every single time he's confronted with a true evil option, he rejects it and has a solid, in character reason for it.

Now _that's_ roleplaying! Plays evil alignment, but still has in-character reason for doing good. XD
Agreed, i think i might be able to play an evil character other than lawful evil now.
I'll be using Boshack logic for my own character, Nik Nak the kobold Artificer. Evil (maybe) Yeah I'm selfish.. but.. That doesn't mean I do things just to be an asshole. Really. What does being a jerk get ME in the long run. People hating me and refusing to work with me.. no thanks. I need my minions... I mean friends.. to help me get the work done.

He did seem to have help from the dm. He did not attack the witches during their fight and was only hostile to them after they tied him up with the party.
Also giving his situation he would be in a bad spot if he was no longer with the party.
you know, i gotta say whoever is playing Boshak is pretty good at playing evil but dealing with good characters around him.

An evil aligned character does not have to actually be hostile to good characters, especially teammates.
He's doing Neutral Evil really well.
@@DuskyPredator I played a LE character in CoS. My reasoning for not doing crappy things was that the party were the strongest people that he knew he could trust. While Strahd was stronger, he couldn't be trusted. I wanted to get out of there and they were my best bet, so sure, I'll play nice.
And it was the player's first evil character too. He wasn't expecting Boshak to make it past the first couple of sessions.
"I was just expecting three tree ladies in a hot tub like _Hey, Garo... Wanna... Hop in?_ "
They tell you how to lower Strahd's AC. Almost as good, tbh.

Wow, a session that didn't drastically end with things worse for our party than they were when it started? Been a long time since that happened, the group has been in need of a net gain for a while now.

And all it took was some painfully obvious backpedalling from a DM who realized they were about to make the party face Strahd with absolutely nothing if they didn't change shit

I have my party playing an edited version of this campaign,
And they thought they were doing badly because two of the PC's got knocked out,
After they decided to attack a friendly NPC in a dungeon about 7 levels above the party average
After half the party fled the dungeon already.
Granted I did decide to power down the encounter by having the NPC fake their own death just to get rid of these pests.

We all know the REAL price that Gouda pays for her powers: cheese puns! The pain and suffering that it causes to Garou is more than enough payment XD.
Gouda will later realize that her patron had her name legally changed to Thehero.
Her curse is to always grate on his nerves. At least she knows the whey, now.
14:22: He lost everything! All of his new powers. ... He's just a normal, vanilla Paladin now.
The sword mocks him. "I waaaaaaarned youuuuu!"
Boshack mocks him.
That moment when story ending on "half of the party lost their powers and we have just three days left" is a good ending compared to every other story from that campaign.

well, as happy as Barovia allows.
Ngl, I got really sad when Ezmerelda died. Glad she's back, I've been building up my campaign to start Curse of Strahd and I've introduced her to my pcs as a hook. Really like her, and it's really interesting what you guys will do next.
Yeah Ezmerelda is back as a vampire and the group killed rah hah dein.
I just realized that that Esmeralda technically now has a Cr of 13 so I'm quite sure they are gonna kill strahd and they dont even have the rest of their allies yet so strahd is doomed
"Happy" being a relative term in Barovia, yes... but this is the first session that ended with a realistic glimmer of hope that things could actually get better.
And just realized the deal Esmeralda made... she sealed the pact by killing Van Richten... but the loophole in the pact is, nothing in the pact said he had to STAY dead. So then she just had him brought back with revivify.

Not once in this entire prolonged, epic battle of the ages has one managed to so much as scratch the other! Truly their defensive mastery of the blade is without equal by anyone in the world except each other!
Ok technically depending on the way you want to look at it since your still moving it could be considered 2 steps since both your feet are touching the ground although... Or half a step since it's probably not a full step... But it depends on the way you look at it so meh close enough... Also depends on the way you look at it including the guy your fighting...

In this episode:
1) Temple!
2) Puffin Forest finds out what L33T means.
3) The group finds out how to kill Strahd.
4) Voldemort.
Literally every wild magic sorcerer plays with a homebrew for MOAR WILDMAGIC and Im not even mad bc the normal rules for it duck
They really dropped the ball, I have lots of issues with 5e but one thing i'm always impressed by is their ability to adapt shit to a place where you get to do your cool thing.
But wild sorc doesn't offer anything except a small chance to have a spell fail.
Ironically the one time I played a wild mage he ended up being one of the only survivors of the campaign.
Funny how everyone has a magic dad or mom while Garo has 3 magic gfs

Every time you do the "I warned you" gag I absolutely crack up.
What was Boshack's price?! Krusk was supposed to break his oath which is a HUGE NONO for paladins, Gouda almost had a race change, and Garo got chased by a spooky plant monster! WHAT WAS THE PRICE

The one price he immediately refused to pay: bringing back his enemies. He wouldn't even do that for his deity.

You know that oathbreaker paladins are so strong, player aren't even suppose to be able to play them, right?
@@strangerakari2836 hardly. Its effects are extremely selfish and hard to make it work in a party. The theoretical power output it can generate requires a lot of set up and maintenance. Players shouldn't do oathbreakers because it's an extremely square peg in a round hole of most parties. Unless stacked with a necromancer there's no real good purpose for oathbreaker over other paladins
Whatever it was must have been something that even a Chaotic Evil character would never willingly do; Grow a conscience.

As soon as you found out about the scrying ability “The Devil” has it was the funniest thing in the campaign so far.
My group went the whole game not knowing. I figured he was just noticing the completely unsubtle paladin with the Sun Sword going all over Barovia.

I think my DM completely overlooked that fact, because he has only found us twice, and once was to introduce the character to us and say "yeah you cant just fuck around and kill him"

Eh, I miss the constant stream of animation from his usual videos. These videos where there are only a few stills during the entire video is getting old fast.
Michael Matherne I understand where you’re coming from, a lot of people prefer an animation to go with the story, but personally I like these better. They’re longer and can go into more detail than a full animation can, and they’re easier on the creator.
As a complete side your GM was very generous to give you guys a way out of the dark powers pacts. I remmber how much hell you had to go through in Ad&d

Our bard found the godlings offering the pacts and took literally every single one, becoming a horrible Tabaxi demon that was jet black, had a pair of leathery wings, and had to eat a pound of grave dirt or crushed bones every day or die.

For the first time since the campaign started, it feels like you actually accomplished something positive.

I really like the homebrew of the powers that be in Barovia like daddy Maverus and the Fanes. Also I can't find it online anywhere so your DM probably added that himself which I applaud him for because it seems to mesh very well with the overall tone and themes of the setting. Well done, DM.
Really neat use of Argenvast. I put the sword in the possession of the revenant in the castle, but we didn't really get into the dragon's history.
Also, pretty similar to how I used Victor. My party became convinced that the Valakoviches needed to die, and led a mob on the manor. They killed the parents, but never met Victor. It's not like his parents brag about him to everybody they meet. They woke up the next morning to the sound of an explosion. That was a fireball for Fiona's house. When they left out the front door, they got another at anybody in the way.
Still don't see why people hate the valakoviches so much. The mayor was an idiot but he made due with what he had.
@@TheeOK1 To be fair, this was a pretty disruptive group of players, and they caused enough of a scene at the church to alert the guards, one of them got arrested, and while everybody else performed a rescue mission, the arrested sorcerer choked out on his noose, and met with his patron for the warlock pact he wanted.
@@TheeOK1 "...was an idiot" good enough of a reason. I think Gray's law apply here. Sufficient level of incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.

Just FYI, his DM is adding quite a bit to the written material. That being said, it’s still the best published adventure imo.

also in my opinion the priority list for the stones are:
1.(Highest priority) the one that gives strahd elemental resistance
2. The one that gives him an AC buff
3. (lowest priority) The one that lets him locate you if you say his name.

Er, I'd put number 3 first so he can't keep tabs on you and prevent him from stopping you getting the other two. Someone's always going to screw up eventually and say Strahd's name. Plus, it's the only circle that they already are 100% sure of its location, because they've already been there.
True.... but they are on a time crunch and need to make him weaker but first they do need to stop him from tracking them even with his right hand man dead strahd has many allies
I love the part when you use "greater restoration", a spell that "imbue the target whit positive energy", on a lich (an undead creature)
Y'know, the moment you described the Argon Voss being skeletal this first thing comes to mind was Dracolich & not a skeletal dragon.
God that final confrontation with strahd is gonna be awesomely hilarious, I imagine Bloody Tears is gonna be playing in the background as you bust into his wedding.

Curse of Strahd was the very first DnD run I played as a DM. I wait excitedly to know about your story and I love it. It's cool to know other people had the creativity to add their own twists to the main story so it gets a unique flavor. Hope you keep doing it with other sessions once you finish telling us this one.
No matter how many videos I hear it in, it makes me chuckle how Ben's voice turns so easily into Eric Cartman when he uses certain speech mannerisms

The DM is just doing such an absurdly good job just all over this.
Absolutely amazing, I love all the things he changed and added to flavor this already great campaign to fit the party and create a real sense of constant despair on one hand but also a great sense of progression, growth and immersion.
Truly it's this party's adventure and not any others'.

Can I just say that your DM is freaking awesome!
This game sounds like its just meant for you to break somewhere along the way with how things get from bad to worse and from worse to slightly less bad.
Strahd would still be able to know where you are even without that ward granting him scrying on anyone who says his name. If you have a paladin in the group--which you do--every dark lord in Ravenloft knows where you are at all times! Krusk might as well be constantly shooting up flares!
There is something refreshing about the powerful being you are forced to fight just straight up giving you tips on how to kill him and not from context clues.
I remember a Vampire using the heart of a dragon named Ashardalon as a coffin, so that's what I got.
One of those awkward moments when you realize the timetable of this adventure is weird as hell.

This was one freaking sweet session!
FYI, when our wild sorcerer summoned an unicorn with his wild magic my 8 intelligence barbarian tried to kill but it fled. My character swore to catch it and get his kill. Many sessions since that moment, Grrrom still desperatly tries to find kill that (or a) unicorn!
Will we finally be able to see Stan Hellsing in this episode?
