    Hey Everyone!! Surprised to see this on the channel!?! Yeah, we had an absolute BLAST flying this and making this video for you :-) After SIX years on TH-cam with RC content nearly daily, we finally bring some GLOW goodness to the table, and we couldn't be more excited! Hope you enjoy this video! If so, please leave us a like. We'll do our best to link most of the stuff in this plane just below and in the video description box. Keep in mind, the engine in this plane isn't sold as NEW any longer, so we've linked the updated version. Happy Flying!

      This is a really cool video. That plane is awesome. Which quad / drone did you use for the chase video stuff?

      I am so glad to see y'all getting into nitro I've been flying nitro since I was to small to hold a radio by myself my dad would have to hold it while I tried to fly lol. There is nothing like nitro and sig is a solid company and I have had a few somethin extras, also O.S. is great stuff pretty easy to tune for the most part. Keep the nitro stuff coming, God Bless and ROLL TIDE!

      Good job on this video and it was exciting seeing you try something different! I do all kinds in the air, but its been a while since I tried a boat or a truck. You have inspired me! Sounds like a winter project. Next, we will see you with a gasser! I myself fly electrics, glow, gas and drones. They are all fun in their own way! Have a great day - I need to pop up to Kentucky and visit your field.

      Had an absolute BLAST watching this video :) Thank you very much! Liked the content style/alternate format where you're just having fun, giving it some welly and occasionally making a comment on the situation. Encore.

    Love the new start to your videos. Did glow many years ago and flew off water with scratch build plane, a Sig Kadet. Good memories. But now I love my electric foamies and scratch built foam board planes.

    I kit built this plane when Sig first introduced it. I used a Rossi 40 and a tuned pipe down the side. A absolute Blast to fly! The power to weight ratio was enough it would go vertical as soon as you could get it of the ground. Great memories. Great video from drone too!

      That is awesome Edward!! Wish I could say the same, that I built one from the ground up. Not sure I would have the time, but it's something I really want to do one day!

    Brought back some great memories tonight guys. With both the plane and the ESTES rockets. I can remember 50 years ago shooting off ESTES rockets, some with compartments to hold items. The GLOW plane I remember had much smaller engines from years ago. Great video tonight guys. Thanks again for the memories.

    this has prob been my fav video of yours yet... I few months ago I picked up some glow planes... a sig 4 star 40 RTF complete with a nice high end 72mhz synthesized radio and an old goldberg anniversary cub that needs a bit of work (patching, servos, and a motor)... I swapped the 72mhz out for frsky stuff and sold it for about 1/2 of what I paid for the entire setup... I still haven't gotten out to fly it yet because I need to find a proper club to join and fly with... hopefully soon... THEN you showed the ESTES stuff... I grew up flying them, it was something my dad did when he was a kid... I built and flew them with my kids... I still love them...

    First! My first experience with RC aviation was with a .40 nitro trainer. We did not have these fancy 2.4ghz transmitters and hi-tech lipo batteries. The servos I used were huge compared to the ones nowadays. Bonus rocket footage is awesome! Well done Sailors!

    @ RCSaylors: Thank you guys for yet another great video. The end of this video was amazing. I didn't even realize they still made those rockets! Very cool! Nate, great job on your landing... actually was kind of tense for a second -which was fun to watch!

    Nathan, I flew glows back in the 60s and 70s. You did a GREAT job there. I am SO proud of your ability for flight, and that I got to watch your first 'glow' flight. Ya' did good, son. I hope to see more 'glow' from the channel. Only down-side is ya' gotta have it running for take-off, but I feel it is well worth that small bit of non-realism - the not being able to taxi out from dead stop as you can with electric. And, also a bit of a 'pain', you should ALWAYS do the pre-launch power check for each & every flight. You have a good teacher there. Listen to him. HAVE FUN!!! :-)

    • @TheRcSaylors
      @TheRcSaylors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much my friend :-) We do hope to bring more like this to our channel. It doesn't ALWAYS have to be something new out of a box, at least that's how I feel right now, lol! I agree, many pros and cons to both glow and electric. Hard to chose which way to go some times, but honestly electric is mostly superior these days. Still, I couldn't help myself, and had to learn more about this part of the hobby I've been missing out on. Thanks for the kind words, and for tuning in!

    I loved the rockets!. I grew up on those; I had one called big Bertha which was 7 ft long and another I built that was a flying model of the sr-71 , even one that instead of a chute it had rotor blades spring out and auto-rotate the rocket. My mom still has them in a box in storage... I may go look for them at Thanksgiving!

    Nice plane, nice flying. Fortunately I got I/C engines out of my system when I was young and that was all there was as neither of the flying fields I use now allow them. (it's part of the usage agreements) I sometimes miss the smell but not the noise and fiddling to get them to fly right. Enjoy it whilst you can. RC is about trying everything

  • @scottfirman
    @scottfirman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Not familure with that plane. Yes, you can buy a nice used RC Nitro plane for a great deal. Thankyou for supporting my effort to get guys to realize they CAN get into RC even on a tight budget. Looked like a finger biter at first. I have my Sig Kadet that I will be flying come spring. I was going to repaint it but decided its in such great shape, I am just going to fly it as is. As you said, for the price, if you crash, its not that big of a deal. To me, its not the cost of the plane, its everything you NEED to fly a nitro, or even gas plane. I had to replace the engine on mine, I decided it might be better just to invest in a new engine than take a chance on the one I put new bearings in. I WILL be using that engine on my prop boat. I thought it sounded a bit lean also. Its best to let them burble a bit than crackle. Running lean can cause an issue. RC Reviews has a way to run a little clunk bottle that compensates for flying inverted or doing rolls so that fuel is always reaching the engine. It may be NightFlyyer that came up with it. Was that the baby I hear with Abby? Sounds healthy and hungry. Nice plane Nate. Oh, I am getting that Kyosho Blizzard soon! Hopefully this weekend if Riders in Grand Rapids sells them.

      Gas is cheaper to fly than electric you dont really need anything special besides fuel pump20$ to fill gas tank you can flip start those and gas costs 3$ gallon

      That is so awesome! No muffler, probably sounded pretty sweet!

    • @abghere
      @abghere 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheRcSaylors AT those early years, muffler rob off too much power and was not mandatory. Yeah it was loud. We used to tune the engine by holding the plan vertically for max rpm, cannot be simpler than that.

    I too got my start in model rocketry! My first Estes rocket was probably purchased in about 1965 for around $2.50. After I had built a few from scratch, a friend that was “outgrowing” them, gave me a collection of 2, 3 and 4 engine rockets including a Saturn V, that only flew successfully once! I never could get all 4 engines to ignite exactly together! Now you know how really old I am, but still love my toys!!!

    That brings back memories. In the late 1950's and 60's I had a P-51 Mustang line controlled airplane. It was really fast and difficult to control, I got dizzy spinning around in circles. And a line (but no control, just put it on the line and let it go around in a circle) nitro Formula race car. And Estes rockets. I ended up mounting a rocket engine on the back of the race car.
    Cool video. They don't always have to be review videos. Videos of you just enjoying the hobby are cool too.

    Great video, I enjoyed it very much. I've been flying nitro planes since 1986. Back then I learned to fly on a Yamamoto 40 trainer with an OS 40 two stroke. Today I still enjoy flying my nitro planes but I have also a few electric aircraft that I enjoy flying too. When I'm flying my fourstroke planes, I run them rich so I have a nice smoke trail through the sky. I'm two years short of 60 and I enjoy this hobby as much now as I did back then. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your videos.

    When I was a kid my buddy Vic had this plane on a rope that would circle around. It was powered by some kinda fuel from a small canister. It worked for a little bit as I remember. It had to be the.late 60's or early 70's. Definately a pass today ;-) but, at the time so cool. I don't doubt you brought back a lot of memories for many of us today. RC, got the bug and learning alot. Drones, bashing, and planes and looking at those boats. Do you know where I can purchase more time ;-). Thank you both.

    11:33 Back when I was in middle school, probably in the late 1970s, Estes model rockets were very popular in my school. The school had a large club led by several teachers. Whenever they launched, a large audience of students was always on hand. One thing I remember that is missing from the footage in this episode: a car with its hood up was always present. They used the car battery for something, but I don't remember what.

    I'm very happy you did this, hopefully some young people will see Glow as something they'd like. There are very few new Glow guys by me. Awesome job on the flight and deadstick. Used is the way to go. I have 5 of them and only 1 is new (all the old ones fly great). A modern engine is a big help I must say, some of the "vintage" ones can be picky since o rings and the sort wear over time. Good choice with the FX since the needle is far back from the prop, you want to keep your fingers happy. Other tip for happy fingers, get into the habit of removing the glow igniter from behind the prop, not the front.

      I'm 14 and I switchd to running all nitro during the summer. I would rather spend 4 hr tuning than 4 hr waiting for batteries to charge. I have blown more ESCs and motors than engines. (I've never blown an engine) As long as you get good at tuning quickly nitro is more fun imo. I have a tmax 2.5, exceed forza .18, wltoys a969b converted to brushless, an old himoto buggy, and one total piece of crap. But I only run electric in the house when there is multiple feet of snow outside. Office chair backflips...Lol

  • @weofnjieofing
    @weofnjieofing 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its tuned lean for sure. Should see a lot more smoke and you can actually hear its lean as it sounds nasaly. as the fuel level drops so does your fuel flow so it continues to go lean evidenced by the bogging. Always peak the revs always at wide open throttle and drop revs by about 500 to 800 rpm using the high speed needle. Otherwise you will damage your engine and have dead stick landings. Nitro is super easy and reliable not to mention longer flights and easier to fly once set up properly.

    1:58 You guys talk about crashing as though it's always an option.
    You need to re-think your thinking.
    For me, crashes only happen when I run out of options. And I seldom run out of options.
    I like your channel. Keep up the good work.

    Wow i missed having rockets! my favorite was a two stage one that had a clear tube that you can put "payload" into. And yeah it was by (estes) as well.
    Just loved the sounds it made...i wanna say something like the rc serpents gas engine engaging into it's 2nd speed!

    Os also makes a .52 I believe. .40 - .46 is just a recommendation. I'd put a .60 in that all day. I've built countless models just like that over the last 20 years and I always find that the recommendation is enough to get in the air but leaves you feeling like it's lacking a little bit of punch.

    • @TheRcSaylors
      @TheRcSaylors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great tip my friend! I think if this plane out lives the engine, I'll shop around for a used .60 size and see how it holds up :-)

    Back when I was in middle school, probably in the late 1970s, the only RC planes I was aware of were fuel-engine powered similar to this one. Electric RC planes possibly existed, but I had no awareness of them. Without researching the history, I would guess that advances in electronics, motors, and especially battery technology have led to the huge popularity currently enjoyed by electric RC planes.

    Welcome to the world of cleaning up an oil covered airplane with copious amounts of windex and paper towels. Looks awesome. I remember all my first planes were glow powered as electrics just weren’t that available.

    I may be bias, but the rockets were cool. But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit my favorite parts were the chase video. Not brave enough to try planes yet, so I’ll enjoy watching you fly.

    This is the way planes should be.
    And compared to cars/trucks, you can follow your own hills, anywhere you like.
    I have always preferred airplanes, of any description, over two-dimensional cars/trucks/trains/etc.

    On most glow powered aircraft, the engine will run richer in flight simply due to higher rpms producing higher tank air pressure. There are many variables that effect that like, pump, muffler, and type of prop or engine load, as well as the design of the tank and muffler.

    I have a plane I traded for several years ago that has I think, the same engine. I thought about converting to electric but maybe someday I'll try it. I'm a newbie so it'll be awhile. The engine seems gummed up so I'll have to go through it. It brings back memories of flying rockets as a kid.
