    What vintage tannoys do better than nearly every other speaker is bring you into the performance and an interesting mate and lifelike way. This won't be able to be conveyed on a recording but the nuances in the midrange are pretty incredible and the way the dual concentric with alnico makes all the frequencys arrive at exactly the same time and place just can't be achieved with a standard 2 way or 3 way.

    I have never heard NS-1000 sound like this. I have had many pairs and none of them sounds anything like this. I compared whith my own video recordings and it is a big difference.
    Your Tannoys does sounds just like mine thou!

    The Yamaha's seem a little ''muffled'' while the Tannoy's seem a little ''higher'' pitch. Sound the same on 3 of 3 comparaison with Sade. (Tannoy Arden listener here )

    Yamaha's by a mile. Where is the midrange and bass on the Tannoys? The treble is the big difference. Agree the treble sounds better on the Tannoys, but nothing else. I think I would find the Tannoys fatiguing. Great video though. Fun to compare, I'm inspired to record some of my own.

    For whatever reason, the soundstage on the Tannoys is dramatically wider than the Yamaha. On the Tannoys the vocals sound as though they emanate from well to the right of the right speaker! Everything is a lot more centralised with the NS1000, perhaps too centralised. I prefer the Tannoy soundstage but, on the other hand, I prefer the punchiness (but not the harshness....a little too bright for me) of the NS1000's.

      That's an interesting perspective you've offered there Trevor. It got me thinking about the different qualities of both speakers. Thank you

    Prefer the Tannoy sound, they sound more open and airier where the Yamaha sound more enlcosed and boxed in but also more meaty.
    I guess a bit like headphones enclosed or open backed, both can be very good but have their trade off's
    I prefer the thinner but more open and spacial sounding Tannoy's.

    I had Tannoy SRM-12 Little RED, but they died. I loved them. But today i have a strange danish pyramid formed made of concrete speakers with a 8" bass, they sound incredible.

  • @DonnieMulligan

    Tannoy's for me too. The midrange difference is the most noticeable. Little sibilance with the Tannoy's. The phase difference is quite noticeable. Might just be how the Tannoy's throw the sound around. Have you tried inverting the polarity on them? Just a thought.

    Tannoy always has this strange sound signature which sounds so exaggarated. I prefer Yamaha in this clip. How is your JBL project?

    • @vintagehifilover
      @vintagehifilover  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love the Tannoy dual concentric sound, particularly the midrange. Having the two playing next to each other makes the NS1000 closed in while the Berkeley sound more open, better instrument separation IMO.
      I'll have some details about the JBL soon, watch this space =^)

    • @stevedevuono4115
      @stevedevuono4115 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you have the instrument separation comment reversed, by a mile. The Yamahas has much better instrument separation and much more natural sound. The Tannoys sound more sparkly, but very bright, which side by side makes the Yamahas trebble sound muted, but I think it's much more accurate/natural and mids and bass sound excellent. Tannoys mids and bass sound horrible.

    • @Justas-M

      @@stevedevuono4115 I sense a Tannoy hater :D Never liked Tannoy myself. The further I go, the more I understand each one of us listens to music differently and at least in my circle, I do not have anyone who is looking for the same aspects in sound as I do. So it is not surprising the perception is opposite sometimes.

    My NS-1000's sound better than I'm hearing here. Those Tannoy's sound like they have fantastic dynamics. The treble sounds a bit unnaturally boosted and a bit smeared. A very engaging sound though. I'd love to find a pair near me and do my own shootout, but they seem relatively rare here.

    l have been having a look at the plot for this speaker if it's correct, I would say to high peak between 2.2-3.5kHz and is an awful dip after this point to 1kHz of -1.5db.
    looks like if you change the 3.3mF for a 2.7mF or 2.8mF copper film, like Jensen cap, with a 0.3-0.5 ohm non inductive resistor, inline and a inductor over the resistor of 0.5 mm gauge wire with 14 turns placed over the resistor and sold at both ends of the resistor but not capacitor! find some wire and just paint it with nail varnish, wrap it around your little finger and slide it over the resistor.
    might be worth changing the 1.5mF as well for a 1.2mF give you more brighter top end extension.
    have you tried blocking the ports with a sock one or both, could be beneficial in this case better mid-range and extended of the lower bass.
